If you are ok with 4k, check out Cooler Master GP27U, 27" 4k 160Hz MiniLED with 576 local dimming zones, tick almost all the boxes. It had some firmware issues but mostly sorted out. At half the price of a ASD, really a great deal IMO.

They probably killed it off because the 27 inch monitor has become so expensive. That sales are probably next to nothing.

There were rumors LG and Apple were working on a 32" 7K and 27" 5K ProMotion displays so it is possible Apple decided to just let LG take over the project and they will be released as UltraFine monitors or they could just be cancelled completely if LG doesn't feel they can do it alone.

We also have Samsung and Dell preparing to release new 5K and 6K displays that work with PCs as well as Macs, though I have not read anything about them supporting refresh rates higher than 60Hz. Nonetheless, they will likely compete with the Pro Display XDR and Apple Studio Display.

I plan to buy the Samsung 5K display when it ships as I need to replace my 2020 iMac 5K due to my work moving to requiring TPM support under Windows so I can no longer use Boot Camp once it is enforced and instead will use my gaming PC for work and buy a Mac mini Pro for macOS and connect both to the Samsung.
or LG saw no use in it with the volume apple would order, and thus the price apple would charge it was found to be not of use.

I get this deep deep feeling apples next play is OLED or micro led and just skip mini LED

I expect it's sold within expectations. Apple had no reason to offer the Apple Studio Display when they had relied on the UltraFine for so long. IMO, the ASD was released because there has been a vocal demand for it from Apple customers (even if almost none of them post on Macrumors).

I expect the actual Bill of Materials of the A-series SoC and RAM is measured in the tens of dollars. So maybe Apple would knock $100 off.

There is conflicting information on this, but it sounds like 5K, at least, can be done at 120Hz with 8-bit color depth using Display Stream Compression (DSC).

Currently there are some significant issues that crop up when attempting to stream both high bandwidth audio and video at 120hz or above. Heck even refresh rates of 100hz are problematic.

The demuxing process appears to introduce significant lag which results in either unsatisfactory user experience with clear display refresh responses or serious audio artifacts and delays affecting lip sync and interactive sound response.

This becomes especially problematic with DRM content as the specifications do not allow for the streams to be decoupled from source to display…

On PCs currently the ONLY way to be able to deliver an acceptable user experience and consistent audio without artifacting or desyncing is by using two separate audio/video streams. One with a 60fps video and high bitrate audio stream and another with high resolution and high framerate video and an effectively unused or non-active audio stream.

This is frankly a massive PITA and it’s cumbersome to implement. (Currently employing just such a setup driving 4K HDR at 120hz along with HBR Dolby Atmos Audio to a separate / independent receiver.

The DRM implementations don’t allow you send the video and audio on separate components without converting to analogue so you need two independent and concurrent streams. Massive waste and I imagine the issues they’re running into is the same when attempting this in the Pro Motion displays.

One of two things need to happen to resolve this:

1. Either the industry needs to come up with new hardware that can handle everything over one bus with one chip.

Or

2. The standards for DRM need to allow demuxing the audio / video streams in software and then the system can deliver the audio and video in sync over appropriate buses.

This is an industrial tug of war that I don’t see getting resolve any time soon as it’s been a problem for years now with absolutely no progress outside of people like myself figuring out sad and expensive hacks to get setups like these to work.

Edit: this is not a noticeable problem for many non-interactive content streams (i.e. films and video) but in a computing environment where HBR audio is muxed in real time it’s really a massive issue.

If Apple would just remove the ridiculous iPhone they grafted into the Studio Display it wouldn't cost so damn much.
It is legit possible that it was cheaper to integrate an A series chip they already have tons of and lots of experience working with into the monitor, given the relatively low quantity of monitors vs phones etc apple sells, than it would have been to put a less complex but more bespoke controller in instead.

Don't know about you all, but I for one am grateful Apple and Tim Cook have the courage to not release a high refresh rate desktop monitor.

Nobody needs 120hz display or more than 16gb RAm.

Bravo, Apple, BRAVO!

The only thing I can think of is the overly high cost of the monitor!

Apple should just release a new 27-32 inch 🖥️ iMac with ProMotion.
If they can make a 27" iMac, they can make a standalone 27" monitor. If they apparently can't make the monitor, how do we expect an iMac to be possible.

For Most people 27” is enough

Sadly I’m not “most people”

I’m a consumer in 2001 thinking 21” computer monitor is not large enough

Obviously no need for a $5000 standalone monitor when you can have three of them in your $3000 headset.

They probably looked at potential sales and figured it wasn’t worth it for a company the size of Apple. Half this forum would order it and then return it because of some minor issue.

I would be with you on this if it wasn't for the price gouging Apple does elsewhere with RAM and SSDs. It might be cheaper for Apple to do this, but they'll still charge the consumer an arm and a leg for it.

How could it be the same price as something that came out over a decade ago?
Thats the retail price of a Cinema display from a decade ago. A Mac Mini has always sold at the 599 price point for more than a decade and Apple has always had a $999 notebook.

HAHAHA just days after I said people should be focusing on this stuff instead of the stupid new M2 to M3!

For $1.6k I want a better screen than currently available, so it doesn’t look bad when being used next to my MacBook Pro’s screen, I don’t want to be stuck with P3 color (what about Adobe RGB?) and I want a much better built in camera.

I was part of the tech layoffs last summer and couldn’t hold off any longer and purchased an ASD for work even though all the rumors were pointing to higher-end displays being imminent. I also couldn’t justify spending $6K on the APD XDR with it being 3 years old already at the time. I wonder what happened to the rumored 7K display? I suspect the only logical sense would be for it to be released in conjunction with the upcoming AS Mac Pro. I never understood how the rumored ASD ProMotion would fit into the lineup being a standalone display at 27”.

The same way a 2010 MacBook Air cost $999 and a 2020 MacBook Air cost...$999.

I don't believe the 7k rumour. 6k at 32" is already >200 ppi and enough to qualify as retina. 7k would allow a push to a larger size, but I don't think there is much market for monitors >32" - at least not for 16:9 displays. If Apple embraced 21:9 ultrawide displays with a 7k3k panel that would be fantiastic, but I can't see it.
