Monitor market is not as lucrative as it was in 2020/2021. Turns out people are not willing to pay a ridiculous $3K for just an Apple Monitor.

If Apple would just remove the ridiculous iPhone they grafted into the Studio Display it wouldn't cost so damn much.
That’s not why the ASD is expensive. It’s a low volume product. So they wanted to extract maximum profit for the early adopters that would be willing to pay the ridiculous premium.

Please post some links to quality 5K displays in a normal display ratio that cost less. Do they exist? I'd be very happy to find one if so.
Plenty of them is available on BestBuy. They are also cheaper.

Actually, a base 2020 5K iMac is $1170, direct from apple, get it in 2 days. 27" iMacs havent had spinny drives in years, they ship with 2500 MB/s SSD.

best bang for the $ from the apple store -- 27" 5K iMac w/ 3.8 i7 / 1 TB SSD / 8 GB Radeon pro 5500XT for $1600. DIY Bump to 72 Gb of ram for $200 more. or Comes with baby keyboard and crappy mouse. Resell them to make up ram cost.

Can run mavericks to Ventrua. Thunderbolt 4.

damn this is sad

Gut-wrenching! 😕

What!? But that is the display we were all waiting for…

Definitely not alone there! 😔

So is my purchase then, I guess.

Yep, same!

Maybe the panels were for a 27" iMac that is being cancelled or postponed to avoid competing with the Mac Studio Display combo or upcoming Mac Pro.

Hope so!

I’m excited about this product, but it sounds like it’s going to have to be a 2nd Gen studio display at some point. Look at the price of the current. It’s the price of a MBP. Is this going to be $3,500 sitting under XDR?

Also, it’s going to require Thunderbolt 5 to have the bandwidth for 5K 120Hz.

Sounds like we just may eventually have a miniLED 2nd Gen Studio Display.

For a nice, beefed-up display, I would’ve shelled out 2k. Not sure how much longer I will wait!

Let’s wait for WWDC. Historically, the company has never ever announced a new pro Mac tower alone without a new pro display to go alongside. We’ve got less than 60 days left.

Whelp! All tech purchases will be held off at least until June. I have zero interest in anything relating to the virtual reality portion of the show. Mac Pro. Hopefully a new display. Maybe the MBP 15” Air. ios17. That’s it!

Big disappointment in this news. I don't "care" about the cost but the quality. If you're staring at something all day having a good display helps.

What are some good alternatives now?

Despite some negative comments about the Apple Studio Display, I've been extremely happy with mine. In fact, I liked it so much that I recently purchased another one to use on either side of my Pro Display XDR. Both displays have been fantastic and each one serves a unique purpose. I even used loopback to make both displays function flawlessly as stereo speakers.

One thing I appreciate about the Apple Studio Display is its impressive feature set, which includes on-board speakers, a center stage camera, and exceptional color accuracy. In addition, the screen resolution is truly remarkable. Most consumer-grade monitors simply can't compete when it comes to these features and build quality.

Although the Apple Studio Display is a bit more expensive than the previous Apple Thunderbolt Display, which was discontinued 7 years ago, I still think it's worth the investment. When adjusted for inflation, the previous model would cost around $1,268.01 USD today, whereas I was able to purchase a refurbished Apple Studio Display for a similar price. Plus, I love the convenience of being able to charge my MacBook Pro with a single cable.

As someone who has owned every iteration of Apple Display, including the long beloved 30" Apple Cinema Display, I can attest to their longevity. In fact, two of my retired 2008 24" Cinema Displays are still running and are now being used by my kids. My 2010 27" Apple Cinema Display is now being used by my wife in her home office, and I gifted my 27" Thunderbolt Display to my mom. All of these displays still look as good as the day I took them out of the box and continue to be used on a daily basis. In my opinion, these displays are built to last and I fully expect to get 10+ years of use out of my new generation of displays.

I expect the impending MacPro will be full-on Thunderbolt 5 and accompanied by an ≥8K 120Hz HDR 2000-nit 42" display, just what the content-creating FCP market requires. A 27" 5K HDR display and a refreshed 32" 6K HDR display seem like natural choices for Apple for the same FCP user base. Be they Mini-LED, Micro-LED or dual-layer OLED, bring 'em on! Some of us have serious work to do. :)

For $1.6k I want a better screen than currently available, so it doesn’t look bad when being used next to my MacBook Pro’s screen, I don’t want to be stuck with P3 color (what about Adobe RGB?) and I want a much better built in camera.
Same here. Got my ASD last November, knowing what the shortcomings were. Lack of ProMotion is not a problem for me on a 27" monitor. MiniLED would be nice, but I can't see any difference at the distance I work (might be going blind?).

Misses:
• Needs improved Adobe RGB gamut
• Better built-in camera (I still have not used mine other than testing it, but no excuse at the price point)
• Light leak at corners is pronounced with solid black screen
• Should have had a second TB Port

Would I buy it again? Yes.

What I don’t understand is why Apple didn’t just make a simple display based on the iMac’s display. Something that doesn’t break any boundaries nor introduce new technologies, just a solid & basic Apple display that will be better than any other budget display on the market. USC-C, just 2 speakers, iSight and that’s it. A $699 price point or similar price to a base or mid spec Mac Mini. Will be within reach of Mac Mini or MacBook buyers.

Apple is trying to make a 35% margin on everything, and the display market is just too competitive to allow that.

So Tim Cook would rather not make a thing that customers really want, than sell a few billion dollars of the thing and dilute average margins. Instead, he'll sell a little bit of a thing with high unit margins and claim success. This is the how I understand this stupid m13 monitor and the AR/VR use-case-less device.

He's jumped the shark on the financialization of Apple and they need to bring in another product leader who is focused on the customer.

I picked up the Studio Display in August last year and it has been an absolute joy to use every single day. My only regret is I didn't get it sooner.

Yeah, you're kind of proving my point here. What's listed there is various configurations of the Apple Studio Display, plus a 5K LG UltraFine which is still $1300 and like 5 years old. There's also a 4K display listed, which is not at all the same thing.

Like I said, if you want a 5K display there aren't a lot of choices out there.

Either that or wait for the upcoming 27" 5K Samsung ViewFinity S9. Unfortunately it doesn't look like there will be any retina 120 hz+ monitors anytime soon though.

Seeing how MacRumors already cries about the price of the Apple Studio Display, it makes sense for Apple to not even bother with a mini-LED and promotion display.

The current mini-LED monitor of Apple without promotion already costs $6000. And then add promotion too? 27" will make it a bit cheaper, but not by alot. Expect at least $4000+ if not more.
