That's a lot of coin..completely takes it out of the Christmas list for almost every potential customer's kid. Even if I could afford one, I'm not buying generation one. I bought a gen one Apple Watch and it was a mistake. I am excited to see where this tech goes though.

So $3,000 is what Apple wants you to believe this is worth. It may be able to be configured to such a high price once you include the watch and the phone that unlock every feature but I doubt they are looking to make waves with how out of reach it is.

If VR is a major thing, something we will all be using some day. It will be priced to be more affordable, even if its subsidized. If you see them partnering up with other companies to offer the default services this thing provides, then Apple is getting a lot of money for it. If it has more accessories than usual, Apple is making up some money on those too.

Maybe in 3 years this version will become the SE version at a more palatable price once the software ecosystem is there to support the influx of customers.

GAS PRICES ARE HIGH

INFLATION OUT OF CONTROL.

RENT AND HOUSING OUT OF CONTROL.
That's the point, when you live in virtual space you don't need those things, and soon you can do your imaginary work to earn tokens for your avatar! Memoji premium incoming...

I have a feeling this is going to be like Apple TV -- The profit will be in the services, not on the selling price of the hardware. Or maybe that's hopeful thinking, bc I'm pretty sure I'm going to want this thing when I see it.

Considering how Apple has done things in the past, this is how I see it playing out. The first generation will be relatively expensive compared to competitors because it handles much of the processing on the device. Allowing for more of a playstation gaming experience where nothing lags and you are limited to a specific number of people that can join your match. But this is the kind of technology that will require huge server rooms to handle the traffic of thousands of people that will be in there at once. So the possibility is there that an extremely cheap version could be made that will work by streaming to your headset. For those not looking to experience the fast action games, just folks wanting to sight see and do basic content consumption. A streaming version could be made for less than the basic occulus but they'll still charge more than the occulus because its Apple. And the experience would probably still be better than the occulus as far as motion tracking is concerned. They could also reduce the number of people in a crowd you see to just your friends and "certified" people. To keep crowd sizes at a minimum, or just limit big crowds to things were they are locked into the seats so nobody uses their avatars to bother someone else or cause a scene. Its probably going to feel like the Demolition Man movie city. All the nice looking folks walking around and some goofballs popping up from time to time that get removed quickly.

Plastic SE version and Aluminum for the Pro version. The pro version can map your expressions so your avatar can emote. It would also be able to play AAA titles at max settings with the lowest lag, the SE would play the more basic games.

My only worry is that an all wireless device that keeps using the latest wireless technologies is now strapped centimeters away from your brain and eyes....whats the worst that could happen?

Sure, 3K… a little wrong are we “analysts”?.
Even half will make it prohibitively expensive and a total comercial failure.
No app developers will support 100% that kind a super limited market device at that price. No apps, no success.
Let’s see.

Can someone inform Apple that there is something called Oculus Quest 2 (or meta, I dunno anymore), that is 299$ and a lot of people are buying?

I have a first gen oculus rift on my gaming PC (very much an indulgence) and have at least 5 friends that have bought Quest 2.

Unless Apple brings something totally innovative to the table … I have strong doubts about this. I’m very skeptical.
Apple is far more likely to bring a product that improves upon the $7,000 plus Varjo XR-3 and will hopefully do that in an Apple styled, wireless package with a great UI.

This headset is certainly way outta my range if it's going for ~$3K. Will be interesting to see how it pans out, though. I trust Apple, they have a nice track record when it comes to entering new segments so there's no way they'll put this out if they feel it's not primed and ready to take the world by storm but that price is up there for sure.

Besides scientific or medical areas, VR is aimed to spend time on metaverses and videogames, so this could be the new Playstation. Just lets see how Apple, a complete goofy in video games area, develops this thing.

Why do early comments and the original tweet say $2k, and later comments and the article reflect $3k?

Did the leak get updated? Usually MacRumors will show an edit with an explanation, but there’s no sign of the original leaked price of $2k.

Makes me wonder if the actual price will be $2k but they wanted to leak it at $3k to soften the blow.

And why am I the first person to point this out? (Maybe I’m missing something.)

Good luck getting this one to stick. Sometimes price really is a factor in a products success. HomePod, I’m looking at you.

I can’t think of another Apple product that was released only to “developers and high end professionals”. This would be a completely different strategy for them, so I don’t really buy it. Regardless, I think WWDC will give us a taste of what is to come. Exciting. I’m expecting this to be the first live Apple event since 2019 — incredible how time flies.

WWDC 2022!
I'm assuming you are being sarcastic, but, if you aren't...

Is anyone seriously going to buy these at $2K outside of super wealthy hobbiest? No developers will invest for a market that small.

my guess is rumor mill is way off base on this. Apple isn’t that stupid.
I recall the rumors for the original iPad being that it would be an OS X powered $3,000 machine. Basically Apple's answer to the Windows XP tablets of the time.

So-- it's possible they ARE way off.

IMHO; they aren't though. This is the first generation device. It WILL sell, even at $2k. Apple will release a more consumer friendly version aimed at the Oculus Quest market space (but a bit more expensive) in a year or two after this one launches.

The thing Apple has done really well is demonstrate what a technology CAN do, to convince people that they should buy that hardware. Steve Jobs didn't put the original iPod on a table, he pulled it out of his pocket. Because that's what he wanted consumers to see; your entire music library in your pocket.

This device is going to be bought by people who will want to buy it. People buy $2,000 gaming PC's, they'll buy a $2,000 headset if the specs are right. It will be a top-tier VR experience. People will play with it in stores. It'll be an aspirational thing; people will see it as an example of what VR can be. Then, a year later, Apple releases a much cheaper, down-specced version.

The initial product builds the reputation. The reputation that Apple VR is an absolute top-tier experience. It's a lot harder to release the cheap device first, and THEN convince people to buy the more expensive one for a 'better' experience. If the experience isn't spectacular out the gate, then the entire product is a failure.

Hmmm PlayStation VR2

At least Sony has the Games, Userbase and will probably be much cheaper.
What will have Apple to offer? CandyCrush VR?! ?

$400 for the headset (Pricing hasn't been announced yet; but that's what the original PSVR cost). And another $400 for a PS5 (assuming you can get one).

PC based VR is a $400+ headset with a $1,000+ PC.

$2,000 isn't far off IF (and that's a really big 'if') the Apple VR experience can be on par or better than the experience of those other similarly priced VR experiences.

If it's an Oculus Quest for $2,000... yeah that'll be a disaster.
