:) I am more worried about carrying it near my gonads, as most of us have done for years. Add the heat factor now, that is very uncomfortable, at the least.

I would assume it will be on their new designed iPhone. As with the 6, 7, and 8 models, I believe Apple has moved on to the 3 year design scheme. I would expect next years X/S/MAX design to stay the same or similar for 2019.

My prediction for 2020, notch-less with camera embedded in screen for full front display, 5G, USB-C and possibly a 3rd camera lens on the back to name a few.

i hope yr predictions come true.
really hope so.

Well if the first 5G iPhone comes out in 2020, it'll be sure to have its growing pains. It's going to ship, bugs & all whether it's ready or not. So realistically, 2021 will probably be the iPhone to get. That's a long way off.

This would be cool but the biggest and most important advancement in my mind is battery enhancements.

Though Intel. Doh!

So no hope of 5G on the 2019 iPhones then. Not sure my iPhone 6s Plus will be able to last me another two years...
Honestly, I doubt we'll see much mobile 5G deployment outside of certain concentrated areas until well into 2020. Even then I'd probably wait to buy the second wave of 5G devices. LTE isn't going anywhere for a while.

If you're on T-Mobile you may way to grab an XR or Xs/max now as they support band 71 (600MHZ) and then plan to replace this year's purchase in 2021.

Otherwise, maybe a refurb 8 from Apple and ride that for 2-3 years.

MediaTek? Seriously?

Give up Apple, just pay Qualcomm. You're not hurting for cash.
In case you haven't been following the trial, Qualcomm has been taking a beating due to their patent-gouging practices so no, Apple shouldn't just pay Qualcomm.

"Between a Munich Court tossing out one of Qualcomm's patent infringement cases against Apple, an ITC judge slamming Qualcomm over a paid witness and Qualcomm desperately trying to stop the FTC ruling that could easily put a bullet in Qualcomm's legal case, Apple legal has to be happy with how their battle with Qualcomm is going."

Having said that, I would rather Apple use Qualcomm modems since they are the technically superior choice but by no means should Apple roll over and play dead especially when everything has been going their way so far in this legal battle.

when you know 5g is coming the following year.

How are you anticipating 5G materially changing your phone usage?

I'm looking forward to it more from a fixed-wireless standpoint. Haven't quite figured out how it'd really change my phone usage -- which is why I'm curious as to what you think your real world benefits will be?

It's not about money, principles are though.

Principle? It’s not like these are blood diamonds or from slave labor. People want the best components available if they are paying top dollar for their devices.

..and besides that, Intel has had a history of not meeting their timetables and performance on just about everything they have announced. I would never depend on today’s Intel for anything but going out bussiness by 2020

There are more serious concerns about the radiation from 5G than just the heat

The phone getting the hardware is 1% of the advancement. It will be years before the infrastructure exists to meet the phone's abilities. First the towers, then the actual bandwidth going to the towers would have to be outrageous.
They can do the towers without the bandwidth. I think the big difference between 4G and 5G is that 5G uses small towers in many places instead of a few big ones. Helps with latency, makes edge computing more advantageous, and gives better coverage. Unlike with 4G, home broadband ISPs are looking into setting up 5G for edges to make deployment easier. I can't say how soon that'll be.

The crazy-sounding bandwidth numbers are just theoretical speeds based on the chips, borderline BS cause you'll never see that speed in real life (same with current 4G).

5G is the last great leap in phone features we're going to see in the near future. I expect it'll be like having wifi everywhere, except minus the loss of connection when you change towers. 4G is pretty good but does somewhat limit what can be done away from home.
I don't see 5G offering anything significant over fast LTE. Very few scenarios will benefit from the jump in speed / latency. Shouldn't be too noticeable in everyday usage. What are the types of things you think will benefit from having a 5G connection that LTE can't handle?
