ehh i'm still on my 7 verizon
reason i don't wanna upgrade to x = no home button, dont like face id
reason i dont wanna upgrade to 8 = not much different than 7,
reason i dont wanna upgrade to xs/xr = no qualcomm chip.

I would assume it will be on their new designed iPhone. As with the 6, 7, and 8 models, I believe Apple has moved on to the 3 year design scheme. I would expect next years X/S/MAX design to stay the same or similar for 2019.

My prediction for 2020, notch-less with camera embedded in screen for full front display, 5G, USB-C and possibly a 3rd camera lens on the back to name a few.
Don’t forget the 6s! Last body design lasted 4yrs, not 3

can Intel do anything well anymore?

Its certainly a valid question these days, however smartphone modem's have never been a place where they were top performers. Apple should have Qualcomm chips in their handsets for the best performance....its very sad we're getting 2nd rate hardware (the Xs/Xr network performance issues) because of the mess Qualcomm and Apple have going on.

I look forward to this savaging my monthly data cap in the first hour of every month.

I know, right? The data limits we have now will have to be increased drastically (1TB a month or something) to actually use the benefits of the 5G tech.

It sure seems they've shifted that way in the past 5 years or so.

I couldn’t agree more. That’s why they are no longer reporting units sold. They’ve gotten so expensive that people aren’t buying them like they used to because even off contract you could get into the flagship base storage iPhone for $650. Now you’re looking at $999. But hey revenue is still up 30% with flat sales. Their plan is working.

I just love how people seem to think Intel, of ALL companies, is somehow morally superior to Qualcom. Seriously, that's so rich.

For the prices Apple is gouging their consumers, they should expect the best of everything.
When intel sells you a chip, you don’t get a demand from an intel-owned
intellectual property holding company that even though you paid for the chip, you now also have to pay a patent license fee, which is a percentage of the cost of your entire device, to use the chip.

So they have that over Qualcomm...

5G is the last great leap in phone features we're going to see in the near future. I expect it'll be like having wifi everywhere, except minus the loss of connection when you change towers. 4G is pretty good but does somewhat limit what can be done away from home.
Personally I think it will make very little difference to anyone. From what I’ve read it will basically be limited to line of sight. So for stationary things it might work well, but for mobile devices?

At Apple, profits > principles.

Strange world we live in when a $50 Huawei has Qualcomm radio but a future $1K iPhone might have a Mediatek radio.
All companies are about profit.

Intel modems in iPhone XS and XR are
actually more efficient than the Qualcomm chip.

Intel XMM 7560 Gigabit LTE modem is reportedly faster than Qualcomm Snapdragon X20 modem because aside from undergoing the 14nm manufacturing process, it also offers flexibility and supports 5x carrier with combined downlink of 100MHz and 3x carrier for uplink upto 60MHz. Aside from networking, Intel's modem also contributes to extend device's battery life may it be smartphones or tablet.

"with Intel as modem supplier."

Fail.
According to testing. The intel chip is superior, everyone just assumes Qualcomm is the better when it’s not.

Super Liquid Retina Amoled Flow, new A14 chip with up to 30% better performance, animoji tongue tracking, a bunch of useless .01% improvements in apps that could be updated by themselves, only 1499$ BUT IT HAS KANYE SINGING and omg pearl gold

The XS will be faster even with the intel chip. 4x4 MIMO. Gigabit LTE. Don’t buy into this hype that Apple just went with a “cheap” modem for the iPhone. Here’s what I’ve read on the intel modem versus the Qualcomm.

The Verizon/Sprint iPhone 7 has the Qualcomm chip. AT&T/T Mobile has the Intel chip. The CDMA version supports GSM networks, but the GSM models don’t support the CDMA.

The original idea of going with Intel is that Intel will caught up to Qualcomm in terms of modem standard and speed, and manufacture using their leading Fab, which Intel has failed to do both. 10nm in 2020, when TSMC will be doing 7nm+ in 2019 and 5nm in 2020. I am pretty sure there will be an 7nm++ in 2020 too, which will likely be better than Intel 10nm.

So that is likely the reason why Apple is unhappy, because in typical Intel fashion, they over promise and under deliver.

In an ideal scenario, AMD Zen 2 will hit Intel hard at volume, at leat 10 - 20% reduction in shipment, and Apple will ditch Intel as modem supplier at the same time, leaving lots of empty fab space for Intel.

Right now I don't need a 2Gbps Intel Modem, I just hope they continue to fine tune their current 85x modem and be more power efficient.

I just want a damn phone that works at 4G speeds EVERYWHERE....LTE barely works anywhere with ATT unless your under a tower....5G is going to be even worse.

Don't know why carriers are obsessed with speeds instead of coverage....I don't need damn gigabyte speeds on my phone, I don't even use my 200mbps home internet.

They dont care about your mobile phone. 5G to them is to finally usher in wireless gigabit internet. They have clearly stated their goal for 5G is to compete with dsl and cable internet for homes.

Modem manufacturers don’t matter. They never did.

Infrastructure matters more than the modem manufacturer - 1GB modem matters not at all if the subscribed speed is just 10Mb - 100Mb with a ridiculously low cap. User experience won't vary.

Strange world we live in when a $50 Huawei has Qualcomm radio but a future $1K iPhone might have a Mediatek radio.

I am sure that Huawei is not buying the $40 modem or paying $36/phone as royalty - while Apple somehow managed to signup to pay about $200-300/phone!

With minimal to none user experience change, cost of paying such royalty will be born by us, the consumer.

Incidentally, why hasn't Apple bought up these buggers already?

Agreed. Being on 4G, I've never once thought I've been starved for cellular bandwidth. If 5G is a detriment to battery life, I'll pass.

I always have access to a WiFi connection these days, whether at home or somewhere in publc. Rarely have I had any need to use my fast LTE while doing everyday traveling, like going to the supermarket to buy groceries. Not even at the gym, since I get free WiFi there. The bus and light rail terminal already has free WiFi, too.

5G should be more of an infrastructure issue on which LTE phones could thrive. So, more devices can be accommodated with no latency issues. 5G of course is gonna be a selling a point even for Apple. But Apple has been pushing stuff over the years that I still have not needed: Apple Music (already have my library and if there is a particular song I want to listen to, I use YouTube). I still haven't used Apple Pay either.
