I'm confused. What the hell is Samsung doing here? Isn't this a trial about Samsung implementing technologies that Apple has patented? Instead it looks like Samsung is trying to make Apple look worried about their marketing techniques. It has absolutely nothing to do with the trial. Why is this information the only thing that's being discussed? If I were the judge in this case I would throw Samsung out of the court room for wasting my time

I believe that the sales growth with the competition is due to the lack of innovation with the iPhone. Improved chip, battery, and camera lens will only get you so far and that is all we've seen from Apple in the past couple of years.. I haven't been impressed since siri! Yes the fingerprint was a nice touch but it didn't impress me or make me want to get a new phone. Apple really needs to step up their game with the iPhone 6 if they plan on being on top of the competition. I just hope that the new iPhone doesn't look like an ipad mini since we've already seen that design for a while now...

How do you know its wasting the judges time if you don't know why this document has been presented?

This comment always baffles me seeing as Apple sells more iPhones than any other OEM sells of their best-selling smartphone line.

If Apple is struggling, I'd be shocked to what "success" looks like.

Yeah, because what some sales guy says in an email is representative of what senior management at Apple was thinking....how is this even evidence?

So Samsung is taking the "if you're going to keep suing us, our defense is basically to make a big commercial out of it by making it look like Apple is nervous...and THAT'S why they're really suing us. Not because we stole the ideas, but because Apple is nervous." I'm no lawyer, but this makes NO sense. It's like the defense is the embodiment of the target demographic for Galaxy Phones. i.e. weak minded people who succumb to advertising where hip models outdo unhip slightly overweight models by doing a backflip with a stylus in his hand while the unhip character fumbles with their iPhone to do the same task with his finger. The tag line might as well be "don't be a loser, use a giant phone with a stylus, it's cool we swear..."

If Apple doesn't come out with a 4.7inch or slightly bigger screen and quick reply I am most likely jumping to the HTC one m8. I am tired of the stale ios and I am always jealous of the bigger phone displays out there. They need to go wider and taller though.

Your right. I just assumed this is Samsung trying to change the focus of the trial. They are being sued for copying software apple has patents on. So far they have not presented a single piece of evidence about anything software related or attempted to explain how they aren't copying apple. Samsung just seems to be attempting to make apple look bad rather than saying here is how we are not copying apple. They haven't shown anything. The trial is still just starting so maybe they are going somewhere with this but honestly I doubt it.

switched to Android (twice) ands till came back to iphone both times... but to each his own

But they're so hip.

The first phone only made calls. Smart phones do a whole lot more now. Course you knew that right?

tried it ...not interested.

That's how I felt about iOS. Tried it...bunch of icons...screen the size of a (large) postage stamp or two...lame.

When it comes to screen size selection (and other things), Apple is way behind. The only one's, who currently use Android or Windows, will go get a larger screen iPhone is because they like iOS for some reason. Then there's the crowd who want a larger screen but loathe iOS. Those have no interest in an iPhone.

I want options, not for Apple to tell what I like.

Apple is struggling

Yea they only have 150 billion dollars in cash...

Same here, but the camera is horrid, and the speakers are sub par to most phones in it's class. Not to mention battery life is mediocre.

And people are still loving it? These are the most important things. It looks like people will love anything with a big screen. Me no understand....

Yeah, Apple fans could care less about a quality device at a good value. They just want to be "Hip"...

Enjoy your elegant and magical phone you hipsters!!

Is an iPhone really hip any more? Seems like older people are the ones that are using them.

It is also worth considering how phones are being used less and less for their originally intended purpose. The phone app is probably the least used app on my errr, phone.

Same, and when I do I rarely hold phone to my ear more than a minute or two, always use headphones or car Bluetooth

Right.. that is why Apple is now worried lol

it's subjective

You people who prefer bigger screen need to open your eyes.

BIG SCREEN is a subjective feature. Just because a phone has a smaller screen doesn't mean it's not "innovative" or "behind" by any mean. It's just an opinion, your own opinion. That's all there is too it.

I don't want a big screen. So, a phone with a big screen is not innovative for me and is behind the smaller screen. So who's right and who's wrong? Nobody. It's just an opinion. So stop treating bigger screen as "innovation" or "better" or "ahead".

Sheesshhh.

Says a document based on one guy in the sales department....

Facts are facts. While people continue to cry about Apple's demise, they continue to outsell every other smartphone line on the planet.

Again - if having the top two selling smartphones in Q4 is "failure", I'm sure they be happy to keep "failing".

ONTOPIC:

I think Apple, while they shouldn't be afraid.. should be keeping tabs on the competition. Blackberry didnt, and assumed what they were doing internally was good enough... it backfired. All companies should be mindful of their competition in order to survive.

Good point, BUT your statement kind of forgets that Apple has more than just phones. Unlike BB (RIM), Apple is and will forever be about computers. Let's also not forget the iPads, iPods, and Apple TV. Apple will be fine if relegated to further down the hierarchy of cell phones. That said, their only competition really is Samsung. Didn't HTC take a loss and the M8 was a make it or break it device for them? Media puts up all this hype about competition, when Apple should just concentrate on making the best products they can.

Some of the more recent 5" and 4.7" are't that physically bigger than the iPhone, as Samsung, HTC and LG have done a lot of work on having the screen use the most space available, reducing the borders and bezels tremendously.

They're larger, But many you can easily operate 1 handed (YMMV, depending on your own factors). The Moto X for example is a 4.7" that is TINY by today's standards that has received a lot of praise for being such a small actuall phone, while having such a large screen.

I think one of the problems iPhone users have, is they expect with a larger screen, that all other dimensions of the phone must increase with it. Given the iPhones current dimensions, yes, a 5" phone would look huge and be nearly 8.3" wide!

I've posted it before cause it's a really cool chart. But Apple isn't all that modern with their efficient use of space with their screens, And if they come out with a larger device, you should expect that this efficiency should improve greatly, making a 4.7 or 5" phone not dramatically larger than current iPhones.

Thanks for the reply. I don't believe that chart is quite correct about the iPhone 5S, however. I just pulled out a ruler. The iPhone 5S face came to 12 x 5.5 cm = 66 cm^2 assuming sharp corners which it does not have and I'm too lazy to account for. The screen itself was 9 x 5 cm = 45 cm^2 and taking away another few cm^2 for the <1 mm black rim of the diplay and the figure comes to somewhere around 65%. Slightly higher if I bothered to take out the corners themselves.

Not saying there isn't room to improve, mind you. I'd love to have a way to make it 80% or 90%.

I think the consensus in this thread is,"Hurry it up already Apple. You're years late to the party."

I don't know. What about the 64-bit chip?
http://phandroid.com/2014/04/03/android-kitkat-intel-64-bit

What about the fingerprint sensor Sammy and HTC so happen to release right after TouchID?

Not having a big screen is not because of lack of innovation on Apples part but because it isn't convenient right now. The screen size on my N5 is too big and if I actually used it daily, it would be a pain to get to the notifications one handed. Having said that, I do want a bigger screen for my next iPhone.

Don't be ignorant for the sake of ignorance guys...

People don't listen to reason that's all. If they have something to hold it against Apple users they'll use it. Remember the customizing non-sense? "Look I have a pretty lockscreen." To be honest, that's all people could do on Android in the heyday with little to poor app support.

Tim Cook said size didn't matter...

Just a couple of years ago Tim Cook said that the size of the screen didn't matter and that it was all about the iPhone experience…
BS… Now they are too late in the game and they realize that SIZE DOES MATTER…
People buy Androids cause they are big with brighter and more vibrant screens and cheaper…
Now :apple: is scared cause they should have done this years ago.
Steve jobs said there will not be a smaller iPad... yet, The iPad mini sells like hotcakes…

I want choices. Small, Medium or Large… I choose whatever fits my needs the best… Simple….
