I understand the conversation regarding "the supposed hypocrisy of apple". Everyone is entitled to their opinion on the matter. My opinion, is there is no hypocrisy. Apple can criticize google and at the same time accept service fees from them.

It's not like this has changed in the last few years, despite the protestations of the vocal minority.
It’s hypocritical for Apple execs to go on about privacy all the while taking billions from Google. Unless Apple execs think there are no privacy issues using Google search.

I still don’t see how the “default” is a problem. Sure, everyone’s grandparents won’t end up switching, but the people who care about their privacy will.

And while it’s a steep price, it’s not like Google is the only one who can get that spot. If bing or DDG outbids them, I’m sure they’d take the default spot. Not nearly anti-competitive.
I completely agree with you, but unfortunately, in this day in age, so many people seem to think that anti-competitive and successful, are the exact same thing. Therefore any successful company could have only gotten there through anti-competitive behavior and they must be broken up and made to pay for ripping people off. I mean seriously, won't someone please think of the children!?

Why is it hypocritical? Will people use google search engine anyway from IOS even if Apple accepts no service fees? Does Apple change the internet because they accept service fees? This entire "hypocritical" thing, is in my opinion, a meme at this point.

Which is why I said at the bottom of the post, Apple does what it does in spite of it's critics.

Make DuckDuckGo default! Apple - buy DDG and make it the privacy focused Google.
Is that what you're using now? How do you like it?
I use it right now, it has improved so much over the years. I have not looked back.

Is this simply to stop Apple developing their own search engine? I mean, it's not like they'd move over to Bing or Ask Jeeves etc...

Apple has its own search engine; in iOS if you type into the address bar "Siri" will suggest a site for you.

It'll be interesting to see if semantic search is going to work out. I'm not sure it's that useful, because it requires too much thinking. Maybe for the young ones it'll work better?

Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty today raised her services-related revenue forecast for Apple through the 2022 fiscal year.

applegoogle.jpg

In a research note shared with MacRumors, Huberty said stronger licensing revenue is the primary driver of the raised estimates, including an acceleration in the search traffic-related payments Apple receives from Google. The New York Times last year reported that Apple receives an estimated $8-12 billion per year in exchange for making Google the default search engine on devices like the iPhone and iPad.

"Following strong March quarter App Store results and an analysis of the key drivers of Apple's Licensing & Other segment, we raise our already above-street FY21 and FY22 Services revenue estimates by 3% and 5% respectively, and are increasingly convinced that consensus Services forecasts over the next 2+ years are too low," wrote Huberty.

Despite the positive outlook on Apple's services, Huberty lowered her 12-month price target for Apple to $155 from $164 per share.

"However, multiple compression over the last 2 months, primarily at Apple's higher growth Services peers, more than offsets our higher revenue and earnings estimates, driving our new sum-of-the-parts based price target to $156, or 33x FY22 EPS, down from $164 previously," wrote Huberty.

Apple's service portfolio includes the App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple News+, Apple Fitness+, Apple Arcade, iCloud, and more.

The iPhone itself is a privacy risk. If a google search is what you think is putting your privacy at risk then you need to reassess what your Apple device is doing 24/7.

It’s simple to change the default search engine in Safari.

Well, not really.

Simple for you and me, but not for many people, and maybe Google knows that most people keep the "default" ring tone and the "default" web search engine.

An Analogy comes to my mind, I'll share it even though it's slightly off topic:
I underestimated "Zoom" video. I thought it was nothing last year, so I didn't buy the stock. It maybe got super popular because it didn't require any accounts or setup. I was wondering what ever happened to Skype? Skype was very popular, and then Microsoft took it over and ruined it somehow? I don't even know.

Also off topic - how come FaceTime didn't dominate over Zoom video? FaceTime is simple. Hmmm. I don't know the answers on this, but I wonder.

Apple doesn’t even have to pick a default search engine. It could easily show a list of different options the very first time you launch Safari or during the setup process when you get a new iPhone, and then you get to pick the one you want.

It seems that Google is kind of the "Q-Tips" of search engines....everybody ways says "just Google it" There are certainly more choices.
There are definitely more choices, but all the other choices pale in comparison to Google. I've tried switching to DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, StartPage, etc etc and every single time am disappointed with them and come back to Google.

If Apple thinks there are privacy issues with Google search then yes I think it is hypocritical for them to take billions from Google to make it the default search engine on iOS.

Unfortunately, it seems there is not really any viable competition...for now?

Then Apple should block the google ip addresses from it's devices deep into the operating system. /s

There is really no clear cut lines here. Apple can criticize and maybe some action will be taken by google, but business is business and the service fees really don't change the basic operation of the internet, which is my point about why this is just a whole lot of nothing. But that is my opinion.

Please explain and be specific how the internet changes by google giving apple one red cent?

To me it shows the value of the Apple platform and if Apple can get the money why not. After all, it's not like Apple has an under the deal table to siphon off it's customers' PII and give them to google.

Additionally, google must find the value in the additional traffic as well. IMO, google being a household brand name at this point, I believe many would pick google over the others.

Privacy is one of everyone’s important rights. Before the cellphone nobody knew anything about you. Now there’s so much tracking and monitoring of everyone’s info that taking care of
Your privacy is a challenge
Apple giving us back some control of our privacy is good

Apple accepting money from Google to be Apples default engine doesn’t mean you can’t use something else

Bottom line: let me choose my privacy level

Apple needs to stop partnering with Google on anything.
The company that supposedly does so many things in the name of "privacy" lets Google pay them to be the default search engine.

Is there any doubt left that Apple's privacy rhetoric is mainly just marketing drivel?

I hope one of the many antitrust lawsuits ongoing finally declares it illegal for Google to pay Apple $12bn a year.
Not good to be making laws targeting very specific deals that are otherwise legal.

IDK what's up with MR's fixation on Google being the default search engine. Most people want it that way, and if you don't, change the setting.

Yes. Skype was always really annoying to set up, even annoying to call people on. There was no good alternative that didn't have those problems until Zoom came about.

Take Google's money Apple. Then use Google's own money to build a better Google competitor to release in the future.
They are implementing their own search bit by bit. The Siri suggestions in safari is quite good these days. I don’t click on the Google search results nearly as often as I used to 2-3 years ago.
