What Apple & Google are doing is reminiscent of when Microsoft edged out Netscape to protect their monopoly. If as you suggest most people would chose Google anyway why are Google paying them $12bn a year? Most people just accept the default without thinking
Don't think the two are related in anyway. The corporate behavior of Microsoft at that time, was below the belt.

Because if the default were something else, even if most people manually switched to Google, it would probably cost Google more than $12B/y in lost revenue and intangible network effect from people who didn't switch.

With their server infrastructure, I’m surprised Amazon hasn’t gotten in the game. They have a hand in every else.
What better way to drive traffic and gather customer data than to enter the search market.

I'm surprised they haven't gotten into a lot of games. They could. I was holding AMZN stock anticipating for it for a while until I gave up when Bezos announced he was stepping down. The market hardly reacted to it, but it matters a lot to me whether the CEO of a company is the founder.
