Yes. Skype was always really annoying to set up, even annoying to call people on. There was no good alternative that didn't have those problems until Zoom came about.
To be fair, zoom and webex were pretty popular in academia and business before the pandemic. Skype was good before Microsoft ruined it with the social stuff. Hangout was good until Google transformed it. FaceTime isn’t feature rich enough for business. So all that’s left were those two.

It’s hypocritical for Apple execs to go on about privacy all the while taking billions from Google. Unless Apple execs think there are no privacy issues using Google search.

I can't see any privacy issues. Google aren't getting any personal information unless you as a user provides it to them.

If Apple thinks there are privacy issues with Google search then yes I think it is hypocritical for them to take billions from Google to make it the default search engine on iOS.

I don't think Apple has ever said that there is a privacy problem with Google search.

It isn't a privacy issue if the user voluntarily and knowingly sends personal information in a search query.

The beauty of Apple's GREAT marketing is that a lot of people fall for it. Privacy is just another pretty damn brilliant marketing campaign. It has nothing to do with Apple's true motives or some sort of benevolent mission.

Well before the pandemic, mostly the only people video conferencing were already set up to use the more cumbersome tools. I always found Skype painful, and Hangouts pre-transformation still had the annoyances of forcing guests to log in and turning their computers into jet planes. FaceTime is sorta unreliable and Apple-only.

Apple has its own search engine; in iOS if you type into the address bar "Siri" will suggest a site for you.

It'll be interesting to see if semantic search is going to work out. I'm not sure it's that useful, because it requires too much thinking. Maybe for the young ones it'll work better?
I think Bing is the underlying search engine for Siri. Pretty sure Apple don't have their own.

Exactly. Or going on about how important human rights are to Apple whilst simultaneously being heavily invested - and reliant on - businesses in countries where this is far from a priority...

It's a good thing Apple makes lots of money on privacy. It keeps Apple focusing on this issue.

I would be much more worried if Apple lost money on promoting privacy and I would have to rely on their benevolent attitude.

The company that supposedly does so many things in the name of "privacy" lets Google pay them to be the default search engine.

Is there any doubt left that Apple's privacy rhetoric is mainly just marketing drivel?

What personal information is google getting from a user doing a google search on their iPhone?

Be specific.

I don't have a problem using anything Google, but we have tons of members who love to dump on Google at every turn while blindly defending Apple. Some members are just pointing out the hypocrisy in Apple's righteous privacy sermon by using this deal as an exampe.
Blindly defending Apple? Do these “blind defenders” give reasons? Is apple righteous or is apple trying to do the right thing with its’ customers PII? Does giving up your privacy to google somehow change because of the service fees?

Apple needs to stop partnering with Google on anything.
This isn't an Apple issue per se _ Apple a Google still work together WebKit. You I, nobody else want that to stop.

What we need, for browser, is duck duck go to be 80% as good as google on search results! - Apple has improved maps. Substantially over the years - the hate and ousting of Forstall, he did have the vision you're talking about.!!!

It's time DuckDuckGo became the default on iOS. At least Apple should have a screen during setup of a new device where the user is presented with a list of search engines to choose from.

Apple "Privacy is our 100% most important focus as a company"

Google "Have a ton of money Apple"

Apple "Ok, that seems to have helped us change our mind in this case"

Amazing really isn't it that Tim Cook can sit there, say what he says whilst keeping a straight face and yet still carries on like this.
Google has always been the default search on iOS, even under Steve Jobs.

Take Google's money Apple. Then use Google's own money to build a better Google competitor to release in the future.
Google makes at minimum, twice as much from Apple as it pays Apple.

Maybe it's Google that's building something better and using Apple to pay for it.

I still don’t see how the “default” is a problem. Sure, everyone’s grandparents won’t end up switching, but the people who care about their privacy will.

And while it’s a steep price, it’s not like Google is the only one who can get that spot. If bing or DDG outbids them, I’m sure they’d take the default spot. Not nearly anti-competitive.
No. Out of touch with the real world.

I don't see why "default" is a problem.

MR posters are focusing on the universe of an unspecified group of people whose true numbers are unknown, who MR posters believe are not conversant enough to be able to change the default search engine from google to something else. These same folks who are unable to switch the default search engines will now go through the technical details of setting up an iphone from an out of the box experience and get it running. Yet they cannot switch the search engine.

I don't buy the "let's protect the grandparents from themselives" argument.

Please explain and be specific how the internet changes by google giving apple one red cent?

To me it shows the value of the Apple platform and if Apple can get the money why not. After all, it's not like Apple has an under the deal table to siphon off it's customers' PII and give them to google.

Additionally, google must find the value in the additional traffic as well. IMO, google being a household brand name at this point, I believe many would pick google over the others.
Apple - a computer that always goes on about privacy, the customer's privacy is their concern, it's their narrative, their marketing, their PR.... https://www.apple.com/uk/privacy/
Google - The complete opposite to Apple

Apple is making lots of money from Google, one company that values privacy, allowing another company that doesn't value privacy access to those to want privacy.

Can you see the irony?

Maybe. Hypocrisy, no. I think it's called frenemies?

Is the personal information of Apple customers who use google from their iPhones at risk from that use? If not, I'm fine with Apple making "lots of money" from google.

Not good to be making laws targeting very specific deals that are otherwise legal.

IDK what's up with MR's fixation on Google being the default search engine. Most people want it that way, and if you don't, change the setting.
What Apple & Google are doing is reminiscent of when Microsoft edged out Netscape to protect their monopoly. If as you suggest most people would chose Google anyway why are Google paying them $12bn a year? Most people just accept the default without thinking
