Amazon's Ring Protect costs $3/month (or $30/year) for a single camera with 60 days or $10/month (or $100/year) for any number of cameras for 60 days.
I think it will depend on how many cameras you have. I have a Ring Doorbell and one Ring camera, and that costs me $60 a year. The same thing with Apple would cost me $120 a year if I am understanding this correctly.

Ring is definitely among the most affordable option and it's 60-day history, not 10-day.

But Apple also offers 200 GB storage for $36/year (or 2 TB if you are willing to spend $120/year like I do) that can be used to backup iOS devices, iCloud Photo Library, and iCloud Drive -- all of which can be shared by your household. And with all the security related scandals coming from Ring, I feel more comfortable storing very sensitive information with Apple.

Apple is a fine print company now.

It's all about that bottom line these days rather than having customers naturally and willingly buy in deeper into the ecosystem.

I sure hope so, wanting Apple to be in business for a long time.

Kind of slimy, IMO. I don't have a problem with them charging for this service, or how much they're charging for this service, but I do have a problem with the way they announced it. They should have been up front about requiring a subscription.

Edit: They did put this up on the screen at the keynote, though they didn't say it out loud. My mistake.

Fine print? I think you meant "Giant print" what's in this article is what was 50 feet tall on the slide during the keynote...
Oh come on, only us nerds watch those.

The shakedown continues.

Doesn't count against storage but you need to buy more storage.

Makes sense to somebody I guess...

It's not just storage, but Internet bandwidth. Those dominate a lot of cloud app costs today. Look at Amazon, their lowest published rate is 3 cents per GB. So 30 GB of traffic = 90 cents. Certainly not free, and that rate is only with a bill of at least $30k per month.

Consumer applications rarely charge for bandwidth but it's naturally rolled into storage fees.

They were upfront. They literally announced it on a giant screen with all the text in the image.

My security cameras are tied into my home automation system. I don't need 24/7 continuous capture. That's just silly.

When my cameras detect unexpected motion, my system sends frames via iMessage to myself which end up appearing on all of my devices/computers at two locations, including the iPhone in my pocket.

Works for me. And don't need an outside storage plan.

Shakedown? Are you expecting "free" stuff?

5 cameras and 30 day storage on Arlo for zilch, nada, nowt, nothing. I'll be expecting Craig to come around at least once a month and personally blow me off to give them a tenner for the same service.

Still, I'm sure the execs need those extra zeroes on the salary they already cannot spend.

Edit - looks like I got a special deal but for new sign ups at £9.99 you get 10 cameras, still double the benefit of Apple's service.

Ok, you're right, sort of it. After reviewing the video, it was up on screen (as shown in the screenshot in the article), but it wasn't said out loud. So I missed that part. And I was also thrown for a loop because MacRumors posted this article three days after the keynote!

And Apple makes really great products, with corresponding excellent sales and profits to show. From repeat customers willing to open their wallets to purchase premium products at premium prices. Year after year after year.

That quote is not unique to SJ.

So now apple will also see all of you home. When you leave, how late, with whom. What guest arrive (with facetracking they even can see who the real persons are). They are knowing too much imo.

timely. i've been researching security cams, but non of the ones i've narrowed my search down to are among the ones listed)
i also wish they would up their icloud storage plans...

i am glad i still live in an area where you can just leave the front door open all summer and have the kids walk to school on their own every morning tbh

I grew up like that. In a very poor neighborhood. Too bad we're not allowed to talk about what changed.

Too bad I need 30 days of storage.
Doesn't anyone at Apple take long vacations?
So....you won't have an iPhone with you so you can review footage when alerts come in? Or do you plan on going into the woods for 30 days with no contact? In that case, what good is a camera so you come come back and say "Oh look, my house burned down/flooded/was broken into".

Remember “The Cloud” here means Amazon as in AWS cloud, not Apple. They outsource to AWS like many these days.
And your point is?

On another note, since I already have a 200GB family plan then this is basically free for me. I suspect it will be like that for many others.

FYI, HomeKit Secure Video does NOT necessarily require new hardwire. On June 4, Netatmo announced on Twitter that "[...] a free, automatic firmware update will add HomeKit Secure Video compatibility to new and existing Netatmo Smart Indoor Cameras and Smart Outdoor Cameras later this year."

This. And I really hope Logitech does the same for the Circle 2s. I have four and I don't want to buy new ones.
