There are 1.3 billion people living in China. If they’re not uprising against the commies, who’s Apple to decide what’s best for those people? As long as these decisions only affect China, then whatever. I have issues when western corporations decide that what’s good for China is also good for everywhere else. Not OK.

Nobody is asking Apple to do that, although they do like to claim they are into social changes... when it fits them.

I know you have fallen for their spell, but this is clear that all those things they say are simply marketing c&%p, they care nothing about your privacy and clearly cannot protect you anyway based on all the targeted ads we are still getting and how they easily comply to any external power... It is funny how they challenge the FBI in court but when in China they just accept everything they impose.

Neither can entities like the NBA and elected officials of the US (cough).

Since Apple is so about social justice, they showed little compassion or regard for the Hong Kong protests.

I really wonder how Jobs would have handled this. Kinda think the opposite of Cook.

Because, cough, Apple doesn't give a **** about you, me or anyone else. They're a profit generating capital instrument. It's profitable to be green, and progressive, and social justice warrior for westerners, it's also profitable to shut the fk up when you need to to enter the world's largest market. Apple can do a lot of good in China, by promoting human rights, privacy, and all that, but if they immediately go against the government, then they get booted out. Then what good can it do? People here only see in black and red, it's either freedom and democracy or a 10 nation invasion force to install a puppet democratic system in another country, killing millions in the process.

This is why I don't like SJW's, they're naive and ignorant, and think the world is a simple plaything to fix. They don't understand nuance of politics, why sometimes what you think works doesn't work.

Here's something that'll blow your mind - Corruption (and therefore the trickle down theory) is the reason China has been so successful in the last 20 years? Blows your mind eh? Completely counter-intuitive to how it SHOULD work. In fact, Xi's latest anti-corruption campaign is hurting people in China rather than helping, and actually keeping money in the hands of the elite and super rich instead of spreading it around (sounds similar to another place?) If you actually understand what I said, I'd love to have a deep conversation about it. If you're immediately offended and need to sip your espresso violently, then please, SJW protest is that way.

There you have it. What more do you want to be sure that Apple is not deadly serious with users privacy. Tim is so tough on privacy as a human right and even ban people who he doesn't like, but if someone really big doesn't share the same views, he seems to be silent. As the legends say, money is always a good thing to some people.

“China data center is using the most advanced encryption technology available, which is more advanced than what Apple uses in other countries.”

Happy for the Chinese on this point but given that Apple has the ability to up its encryption game in China, why isn’t it doing this everywhere?

"It's okay when it happens in their country, but not when it happens in mine."
That’s why we have these imaginary things called countries with different human made up laws and rules. As I don’t want other countries interferring with the policies or politics of mine, I also cannot opine on how another country is governed. If you believe in democracy (power of 50%+1), then you must also believe that the people of China have chosen their system based on their total compliance and lack of pushback/uprisings on a national scale, even though they don’t have elections, they do elect their system every day with their compliance (Tiananmen Square being the exception).

They only claim that in the western world. I don’t think they have the same privacy ads running in China (maybe I’m wrong). So they’re not total hypocrites. Next time the US government threatens them with a total business ban, I’m sure they’ll comply with everything the FBI will ask of them. Write to your congress people to change the laws. I did. They did squat. So I’ll vote for better people next time.

I also know perfectly well it’s marketing… as I know not all of iCloud is not end-to-end encrypted and I use pCloud for my most sensitive files. I also use a hardened Linux VM on my Mac with kill-switch VPN and the Tor Browser.

Corruption exists in China, but it is not why China has success, quite the opposite. It is their authoritarian system combined with Confucian ideas.
And while i hardly would call it communist, the poorest have on average gotten much higher living standard. Compare it to India which in many ways have similarities, but because of rampant corruption never are able to properly feed their poorest.

Maybe Qanon is more your speed.

Yes, the only people that think the NYT is a propaganda machine are Qanon conspiracy theorists. It's not like there's a plethora of examples from left-wing voices demonstrating the harmful lies NYT have published over the decades in service of right-wing ideas such as foreign interventionism.

At least India doesn’t have 2m people locked up in a modern day concentration camp. Confucius says China is run by an evil corrupt dictatorship.

There is always a choice, Apple simply chose to comply in order to sell product/services/etc in China. Not passing judgement, just stating facts. Saying "Apple had no choice but to comply" makes them sound like a victim, which they are not, they are a complicit partner.

I can understand doing what it takes to sell iPhones - but Apple has based their entire business on Chiness labor. We pay $1100 for a phone that costs them $300 made in China so they bring record revenue. Meanwhile they are selling out the US just like Google, Amazon, etc. They should have diversified their supply chain to non-enemy countries

And I will always say it: the only reason Apple keeps touting the Privacy argument (which is a fallacy anyway) is because they ended their ad business, otherwise they would be mining our breath to sell us different kinds of mint
Don't look now, but Apple is back in the ad game and looking to get even deeper. They quietly started with ads in Apple News. Brought ads into the App Store on searches. Recently they've doubled down and created an additional ad slot that surfaces paid placement ads in the App Store. With that cemented, they've been strongly courting advertisers to get on board with their ad platform.

You're right though. They tout privacy but are increasingly finding ways to monetize customer data. They know they can do it with little to no pushback because a large contingent of the customer base will find a way to rationalize it.

It's not a decision they can make. Following the local laws is the only option other than being kicked out from the largest market in the world.
It is, they can simply follow Google’s model of do not evil, oh wait… That one didn’t last long either…

If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell. 🤣
