The wait is killing me. Come on Apple, give us an absolute killer event with new iPods, notebooks etc..

You got a DISCOUNT!

I have no problem with computers I get becoming outdated, but with this one, I feel cheated because there will be no period where this laptop is even close to the newest or best. I'm paying a premium for something that is already outdated.

You didn't pay a premium - first, you got $200 off on the MBP (educational discount). THEN, you got a $299 rebate on the Touch. If you don't want the Touch, sell it on Craigslist and get the cash.

SO, you got about $499 OFF as compensation for purchasing soon-to-be outdated technology. This is standard business practice for many retailers - sell off the old product at a discount before releasing the latest, greatest thing! Trust me, the NEW MBPs (whenever they come) WON'T include a free iPod Touch!

I have been waiting for the new intel chipset. I have a iMac but I like portability and For my new Photography job, I need to have a laptop with me to show pics to my clients. I want a faster Processor for programs like Maya 7 and Final Cut and Adobe CS3. I want a Laptop as Primary so I Need the update

I guess this is too late, as you were "forced" to do something you didn't want to do.

Were you without a laptop to start school with? Couldn't you start with an older laptop, and then buy new in September ~if~ the MBP is updated?

Nobody forced you to buy. You bought a product on the open market. And you want to complain about it here. Nobody here, or at Apple, forced you to buy this laptop. Your school imposed this on you, right?

Wake up and look around. Companies of all types tie their incentives to their products in this way. In this case, it's a back-to-school incentive. Essentially the same incentive they had last year, and the year before, etc. Do you expect them to rush their product to market so you could buy the new product before school starts?

Last summer they released the SR chipset MBPs around June. The year before it was the first Intel MBs that were released in the summer. They can't sit around and ask YOU personally what you want released and when so it fits your needs. They release what they want when THEY want it. Sometimes that's not going to work out for the timing of the student.
No, I don't have any other laptop to use. Yes, I am required by this specific department at my school to have a Mac laptop when school starts. I pursued all other options in this regard; I even considered renting something for a month or two, but it wasn't worth it financially.

I don't expect them to conform to my needs, but rather the needs of the students who make up the majority of their laptop sales (from my understanding). Excuse me for expecting them to stay equal if not abreast of their competitors technologically. I thought that was kind of their thing, especially on the pro models.

I'm not complaining, I just wanted to provide a different perspective on Apple's "massive" sales.

advice?

hey all
I have been reading this site for a few months now and can't decide to purchase now or later. I will be a first time mac user (from linux) and want the transition to be smooth.
My concerns are that if I wait for the new Macbook pros -that should be coming out, I will encounter bugs and hardware errors I will regret. How prevelant are these problems with new releases?
There is also the rebate going on- on top of education discounts. I have an ipod now and dont terribly need a new one... the touch is neat though. Then again a new one will be coming out soon. An old is better than none at all, I suppose.
Would they wait two weeks after sept 15th for new releases so people cannot exchange for the new model?
reliable old model or new risky one?
any advice would be great, thanks.

there wil lalways be small bugs when a product first comes out..... wait a few months if you can for all the bugs tio get out

New MacBook

I just hope that when we get new MacBooks, that Apple have got a bit of common sense, and give us a laptop case, that does not have a sharp edge, other than that MacBooks are just faultless, the best ever;)

well somethings happening because most of my neighbours are buying macs.

Sort of upsetting really. I was into Apple (age 7) when they were dismissed as "overpriced and underpowered" compared to equivalent windoze PCs (this was in the iMac G3 era, i longed for one at the time). Yes, little software other than Apple's worked on them, yes they were slower than equiv. pcs but they were what got me into computing and technology. They were different.

Now, as I see Apple's quality control decline (iPhone issues, Leopard bugs, looong overdue Mac updates), their prior ethos of "Quality, not quantity" seems to be eroding as they introduce new lines of products to evoke mass appeal but overall quality goes down. They're so desperate to appeal to the masses that the product quality suffers as a result.

Yes I know they're a business, there to make money first and foremost, but I preferred it when they catered to a happy hard core of fans, and their product quality was at it's best, and you most likely didn't know another Mac user. I preferred the G series of processor names too, as every Mac update was usually significant.

Ah well, days gone by :(

Not unless you have an Time Machine and travel back in time to re-live those days again. ;)

Does anybody else see the new MacBooks having dedicated video cards?

Ah but i couldn't get back to the present, as Time Machine wouldn't run on the G3s ;)

Another thing that gets me is that people don't see you on a Mac and go "wow! i've heard bout them but never seen one, show me how it works!" as people used to and now they're all like "oh yeah, my family all have one". It's stupid really but I guess i dont like something that meant a lot to me at the time hit the mainstream and not be special anymore. A bit like Converse trainers.

As to the vid cards, I doubt it. The X4500 outperformed equivalent nVidia integrated cards I read anyway, and they wouldn't stick anything more than an 7900MGT card in at best if they did give it dedicated graphics.
