It's all those switchers!

Yep! Although I dabble in some other stuff, I'm now mostly a C#/.NET developer and have been running Windows and Linux PCs since I can remember. I've used Macs in the past in school, but only recently got into Apple's world right before the Intel switch. Having followed the industry for a long time, I've developed a growing aversion to Microsofts products (especially consumer) which has gotten particularly intense as I've watched OSX (and Ubuntu) mature in a wonderful product. Looking around at family, relatives, and friends using PCs, I just can't stand how difficult, inconsistent and tiring it is for average people to use Windows. Literally, it is almost psychotic what is required of people to accomplish such simple tasks as:

- Managing documents (scanning, faxing, OCR'ing, indexing)
- Managing digital photos and home videos (indexing, editing, etc)
- Sending and receiving email w/ attachments correctly
- Managing music and movies (indexing, playing, getting them on your HDTV, etc)

The basic state as Windows comes is worthless. You have to go through dozens of different software programs to find anything decent, and almost everything either has a terrible interface, is completely unreliable, crashes, is expensive, etc. Just to get a basic "workflow" for each of the tasks above is almost impossible for an advanced user, and it certainly won't be user friendly --- and I can only imagine how mind-boggling it would be to a novice user. Having recently gotten into serious development work and studying user interaction and interface design, I can definitely appreciate Apple's interface work on OSX and their iLife and iWork application suites, not to even mention the iPhone. They are really in a league of their own. That is why I now always refer people to Apple to buy a Mac when they ask me about what computer they should purchase, or tell me horror stories of viruses, malware, stolen bank account numbers, email accounts, etc. Being "that guy" in the social/family circle, I'm sure I'm responsible for at least 10X the revenue that I've personally spent on Apple products.

People shouldn't even be supporting their statements with Google search result numbers in the first place. It means absolutely nothing, except X number of pages have a, b, and c words on it.

Get over the Dell vs Mac thing!

For example, "Dell Harddrive Fail" would find articles with the text "I have been using Dell computers for 25 years and never had a harddrive fail".

How much is exactly the sales tax over there? I 've heard your argument before and I believe it's true, but translating the prices in us dollars on apples webpages to euros or pounds makes for at least 30% less than they for in Europe, so I suppose the sales tax is huge. That is if you take your euros make them into dollars and buy a mac over in the States it SEEMS a much better option. But there's sales tax in Europe of course too.

The UK Apple Store displays prices both including 17.5% tax (in big letters) and without tax (in very small letters); businesses are usually interested in the price excluding tax because any business that charges sales tax for its own products can deduct the sales tax for items that it buys.

What people don't understand is that Apple doesn't look at the exchange rate every day and adjusts it prices. I am paid a salary in British pounds. Everything I buy unless I go abroad is paid in British pounds. When the pound goes up or down, my salary doesn't change, and the prices of goods don't change. What _does_ change is the result of stupid comparisons "MacBook costs x dollars in the USA and y dollars in the UK" (and no, you can't pay for a MacBook in US dollars in the UK). Just recently the dollar has gone up a bit, and therefore the UK prices and US prices, excluding tax, are almost identical.

Amen, Apple does just make things SOOOO MUCH EASIER. My latest employment has me support MS-SQL and .NET products. The ops people were a little embarrassed to tell people "Sorry, in order to use xxx you must have IE, Firefox can't run that portion due to the MS-Only technology".

But my fear, Apple becomes so popular people write viruses, trojans, malware, etc targetting Apple.

Exactly! I'm very frustrated with people who keep posting off-topic discussion. I'm not saying no one should ever, but I think a standstill has been reached (this sentence strictly for damage control).

The title of this news thread is "Apple's September Quarter Mac Sales Projected to be 'Massive'.". Where in this title (or article) does it bring up Mac v. Dell? It doesn't. So let's get off this tangent, diversion, whatever you want to call it and get back to the discussion of the possibility of new MBs/MBPs.

I for one can't wait to see what comes out! :D

I'm the one who dared mention I'm considering Dell (or HP). Just wanted to say my Dell Desktop is pushing 5 years old, never a single problem. (knock wood-that hard drive must be getting near the end......how long do those things last) It's just a home PC, lots of surfing and documents and photos, not heavy business use.

Still thinking. Leaning toward just waiting and see what news is out by 9/14......My brother (HUGE Mac fan) leans towards getting the newest one..

I don't think it is a Dell thing, I know others have said the opposite but to me (and I use both) it is OS X v Windows thing. Even on a totally reliable bit of hardware if I haven't used it for a few days, I have to wait ages for this that and the other to update, install, several reboots. My Macs just fire up and work. Also the only way for my PC life to be simple is to never install anything new, Plug and Pray is not my idea of fun! As I use Windows less and less, VMware on a Mac Pro is a far safer way to go and I have a weekly clone of the drive and TimeMachine hourly so I can actually repair a messed up Windows set up far faster than on a true PC (repair on Windows is not a guaranteed strategy on a PC either whereas it is on my Mac set up). So soon we will be 100% Mac and run Windows when needed on a Mac. I think I am typical of many and this is why we are seeing such massive Mac gains.

That was meant to be ironic, right? God I hope so ;)

Exactly. Some are imagining that U.S. prices have gone down or that their prices have gone up because of the weakening of the dollar. Neither has occurred. But just as a matter of academic interest, since Apple products are always singled out, I compared the price of the entry-level Dell Inspiron at the U.S. and Netherlands online stores. The U.S. price is $499, in the Netherlands it's €479. Subtracting Netherlands VAT of 19%, the price of the Dell at the current dollar-euro exchange rate is $600. So it turns out many products "cost more" in Europe, not just Apple products.

hehe, I'm one of the "halo-effect" guys out there.
I wanted an iPhone, but I first bought a MacBook. =P

I see apple will make a lot of first-time mac owners angry after their purchases...

Because: some won't know about the tonnes of rumours product rumours;
people could probably go for a return (but involving complicated procedures). But they'll probably be happy again with the iPod Touch and the factor.

I was forced to order a 15" MBP a few days ago based on time constraints.

I didn't want the iPod touch (although I like it and am going to keep it). I've been waiting all summer for Apple to rev the laptops but I'm required to have a Mac laptop for my major by Sept 1st.

As someone whose major is fairly computer dependent and who needs the computer I get to last for several years, it irks me that they appear to be waiting until immediately after the back-to-school season to put out new laptops.

I have no problem with computers I get becoming outdated, but with this one, I feel cheated because there will be no period where this laptop is even close to the newest or best. I'm paying a premium for something that is already outdated.

Omg Omg !!! Check Out The Apple Uk Store. All Macbooks Are Saying 2 Business Days To Ship. Yesterday It Was 24 Hours - Release Due Now!!!

Everything in the UK store says 2 business days. At a guess I would say this is because it is a bank holiday on Monday??

I guess this is too late, as you were "forced" to do something you didn't want to do.

Were you without a laptop to start school with? Couldn't you start with an older laptop, and then buy new in September ~if~ the MBP is updated?

Nobody forced you to buy. You bought a product on the open market. And you want to complain about it here. Nobody here, or at Apple, forced you to buy this laptop. Your school imposed this on you, right?

Wake up and look around. Companies of all types tie their incentives to their products in this way. In this case, it's a back-to-school incentive. Essentially the same incentive they had last year, and the year before, etc. Do you expect them to rush their product to market so you could buy the new product before school starts?

Last summer they released the SR chipset MBPs around June. The year before it was the first Intel MBs that were released in the summer. They can't sit around and ask YOU personally what you want released and when so it fits your needs. They release what they want when THEY want it. Sometimes that's not going to work out for the timing of the student.

Whatever. With the possible exception of number one, you can do the other three just as easily on Vista as on OSX. In fact, Windows Media Center is far superior to Frontrow.
