I find this comment hard to believe. Let's have some context on this. I come from the Windows Mobile world. My devices hardly ever have even minor OS updates made available for the devices, never mind major OS releases. To get the latest OS means purchasing a new device. And in the desktop world a new OS for $10 is a dream.

The main features of OS 3.0 are just as relevent to iPod Touch users as iPhone users. Spotlight, Copy and Paste, faster browsing are all obvious worthwhile enhancements.

And I can't beleive that nobody has mentioned the most obvious reason why 2nd Gen iPod Touch owners should upgrade:

"Every iPod Touch (2nd Gen onwards) has a Broadcom BCM4325 chip inside, which in addition to supporting WiFi also supports Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. However the Bluetooth in the iPod Touch was disabled - until iPhone 0S 3.0. The upgrade has unlocked and enabled Bluetooth on the device. The hardware unlocking combined with the new API's made available to programmers in OS 3.0 allows the iPod Touch to talk to other iPods/iPhones for peer-to-peer gaming, exchanging data, and connectivity with 3rd party peripherals such as headsets, computers, speakers, car accessories, A2DP laptops/watches and more."

I definitely recommend that everybody who owns an iPod Touch 2nd Gen device does the upgrade. For $10 you get Bluetooth on your device and the latest features. You also stay in sync with the community so that you can take advantage of the latest software and the features developers will bring to life over the next few months.

My Dad has a 2G iPhone and I will bet that he has whatever OS it shipped with and will continue to have it until I fly across the country and update it for him. He also has never set up his voicemail. "If I have voicemail, people expect me to call them back."

I have a 1.1.4 and a 3.0.0 version iPhone here side by side and the 1.1.4 is twice as fast as the newer firmware in almost any task. It is mind boggling really, so what 3Gs is going to do is just give you back the speed that has been lost since 1.1.4. I for one am often annoyed at the extra second or so apps take to start up or do some task on my 3.0, which was the same on 2.2. It makes my phone feel very sluggish, reminds me of using those crappy N series Nokia phones, shudder. I am sad that the speed was not improoved at all in 3.0, very sad

Upgrading is not hard. Next time they stick their device in iTunes (often), they'll see the update message. In the UK, O2 sent mass text messages about the upgrade. I'd imagine most carriers did.

Soon as T-mobile jumps on the iphone bandwagon, i'd gladly drop 2 or 300 bucks.

T-Mobile? Eww ... you know ... I honestly don't know much about the quality of their service, but I do know how frakking annoying the schmagoolies at the mall kiosks are EVERY time I happen to pass by one! Is there some new requirement that all US malls must now have at least four T-Mobile kiosks on each floor/wing of the mall?

I personally do not know why I paid $10 for the 3.0 upgrade; I have not used any of the new features and some applications do not work on 3.0; basically I paid $10 for a step back.

At least they didn't charge me twice to upgrade 2 iPod touch devices.

I hope Apple's greedy approach to iPod Touch firmware upgrade will bite them in their ass.

As a 1st gen iPod Touch owner who paid $10 to upgrade to 2.0 last year, I feel cheated when they ask me to pay another $10 to get 3.0

Collect cans for cash.

The homeless people fall asleep in the public libraries and leave their sacks of cans just laying around in the non-fiction and periodical sections.

Yeah everything Apple done is right and we should suck them all up, even for the homeless.

I find it interesting, that is say HTC, since HTC could mean their WM line or their Android line. I think it would have been more accurate to put WM as one, Android as another, and include Symbian(which I hear has the global market share something).

Perhaps you should read some of the books and other publications in those sections instead of ripping off homeless people!

Book sales on iPhone also rising

All indicators show that the iPhone is leading with a comfortable advantage to the pack in the back. I am a publisher that also publish electronic books. sales on the Apps store have being rising fast. Palm developer's kit is still on the works and Blackberry is not friendly for books.

No wonder the adds are targeting iPhone users.

Thank you for the report.

Of the 8% iPhone owners on OS 2.2, I bet 7.9% of those phones are unlocked. :p

I know lots of people on Tmobile who are on 2.2, and just don't care/know about 3.0 and its ability to be unlocked.

You mean 0.63% of all iPhone owners? ;)
