If they provide a well made compact adapter then I don't see a problem but just a cable would be awful. It actually could be an improvement since the newer iPads and some other ipods have a curved edge that a flat connector does not fit securely with. An adapter curved on one side to fit the proper device would be a big improvement.

Wow, weak move Apple. Weak move. Updating a product that was, well, just updated (I'm talking about the third-generation iPad here).

The third-generation iPad was introduced and released in March, but there are still countries out there where it has only been released just recently (see China for example, the third-gen iPad launch was just a few weeks ago: July 20).

They didn't mention what would be updated.

It could be the same iPad, except with the new connector. If that's the only difference, I don't see why it would piss off current 3rd gen iPad owners.

What would they need to update anyway? The 3rd gen iPad is still by far the best tablet on the market, other manufacturers are only competing on price.

This all but spells death for the iPod classic and perhaps the shuffle too.

Why? They can surely put the new connector in the next edition of the iPod classic. Or just keep it with the same connector so there's no issue of the older, iPod-only accessories not working with the next release. After all, it's not like they've added any significant, new capabilities (other than storage) to the iPod Classic in a while anyway.

Got in before someone complaining about the "iPhone 5" name! Yey.

Otherwise, no surprise. They don't want to fractionize their products. If they switch, they switch everything. ;)

What are you talking about, on this thread is all about the iPad 3S Lol

Or my favorite, iPod Touch XL

Wholesale dock connector update is the best argument I've heard yet for an early iPad revision, but only if it really is wholesale. Does the iPhone 4 (which will presumably move to the $0 slot) get a hardware revision, too? iPhone 4s? What about the iPad 2? Or is the iPad 3 the new cheap version and also getting a new connector? Are they dumping/updating the iPod classic?

This rumour needs more than 'everything's being updated, even one of the iPads!' to be believable.

I think it should be pretty obvious that Apple would only change their top of the line products. iPad 2, and iPad 4S and below get left in the dust.

Shuffle and classic are less clear. I'm guessing they get dropped or no update/mention at all. I doubt Apple would care about updating them to the new dock connector.

Wow, so implementing a newer dock makes the older product unusable? You making it as a big deal but it's not really a problem. Also, the newer dock was just recently finalize. If it was implemented on 3rd-gen iPad, you will rant probably why they didn't implement it on iPhone 4S? it's just out you know, bla bla

I call BS. Apple won't update the iPad mid cycle. If it was going to get a mini dock port they would have put one on it when it was released. All current models will stay the same.
Not sold on them releasing an iPad mini this year either. Unless they just make the iPod touch bigger.

I don't think they'd announce it. Just like they do silent spec bumps on iMacs and others mid-cycle.

Don't worry about obsoletion. The iPad update will likely be a silent update: New connector, nano SIM and an A5X in a smaller process. Not a real update, just minor adjustments for consistency. (imagine the iPad being the only thing Apple sells with the old connector.)

Maybe bringing your iPad in for warranty or battery service in a few months will even get your the updated model as a refurb.

Wouldn't it be cool if they have found a way to build a snap in connector to convert the existing products to the new standard?

I doubt this would actually happen as it looks as if the new connector might actually be slightly thicker.

My guess is that it will get a slimmer body and new dock ports, that's it no spec bump. And Apple is trying to push iPad from Spring releases to Fall releases so they can announce Apple TV set.

That's not what I am says. I'm saying it's weak that Apple didn't implement this in March. Else, they should have waited until March.

For current third-gen iPad owners, this means that their resale value will go down and that most NEW accessories will be focused on a smaller dock connector.

So yes, I think it is weak that they might update the iPad 3 so soon. It's especially unfair for the Chinese (and some others), where the iPad 3 launched just 2.5 weeks ago.

Where did you see that claim? I saw claims that they're:
A) Updating the dock connector
B) Going to update the entire iOS line to use the new connector
C) Going to start doing it as early as September

From that you seem to have inferred that they're going to update the entire iOS line all at once in September.

On the other hand, if the next (normally scheduled) release of each iOS device has the new dock connector, and the first such update is announced in September, then everything quoted up top is true, and there aren't any 'mid-cycle' updates to *anything*.

Did you read the whole article? Starting with the headline and including the second quote I pulled out of it? :)

It's clearly saying the new iPad is coming out this fall...any way you slice it, that's "early". And they do think it'll all happen at once on September 12, but are hedging slightly on that.

This is what happens when you put the supply chain guy in charge of the company. Things start rolling out smoothly worldwide, and technological leaps in a product evolution are propagated across the lines nearly simultaneously. Even Steve said before he passed that Apple would release things as technology permits and not adhere to a firm schedule.

The iPhone 4S had a midcycle release for Verizon. The iPad2 had a die shrink, the iPad3 is getting a die shrink which will now be coincident with the new dock connector thus some newer higher speed accessories.

The iPad7 needs the die shrink to barely be within the temperature bounds.

Rocketman

Apple did make the iPod Touch bigger. It's called the iPad. :D

This is how I see the next few months going down:

Apple unveils an entirely new iPod lineup, the new iPhone, and the modified 3rd generation iPad. While the event is being held on September 12th, I do not believe the new iPhone will be on sale until October 1st. The reasoning? With the launch so closely timed to the holiday quarter, Apple may be looking to defer sales of the device so all orders (pre-orders, launch day lines, holiday sales) are within this quarter, leading to a (most likely) blockbuster holiday sales record. This delay of a few weeks will also allow developers to update their apps to support the newly resized display.

Apple may also be looking at increasingly diminishes sales of the iPhone lineup this quarter (as the past quarter showed), leading Apple to push even harder for a record quarter.

Will the new, smaller connector change the amount of time it takes to charge the device? That's all I really care about..

It was obvious they'd be updating the iPad just six months after the last update?
I doubt this wil be a real update, more of a minor update for solely the dock-connector. Ofcourse, if it would be a significant update, that would be more news.

so they change the connector and nothing else. not a stretch, and not a big deal either way.
