You think OpenAI is doing it for the exposure? haha. They're the hottest thing in tech right now and they're already giving limited free use of chatgpt. They don't need more exposure. They need funding. Altman wants to raise 7 trillions(!) to get to AGI.

They're going to give the 3rd richest company in the world and eventual competitor a free lunch? Apple needs them way more than they need Apple. Unless Apple is selling out its users for their data (99.9% not happening), Apple is paying OpenAI. How much, we'll find out in like 10 years, if ever.
OpenAI had a value of $80 billion earlier this year. No doubt its deal with Apple has raised its value. Apple could still buy it without breaking much of a sweat. It is doubtful Apple will do that.

1. The AI developed by OpenAI is not unique. Competing models like Gemini, Llama, Claude, and Mistral compare favorably with GPT-4. Much of the technology is open source, so no one has a significant technical advantage. Apple could catch up quickly on LLM technology if they aren't already on par with the state of the industry.

2. It doesn't matter what Altman wants; no one is handing him $7 trillion. Investment doesn't work that way.

3. Apple is using a strategy of marketing a potential competitor’s product to ensure the competitor doesn’t own the customer relationship. This allows Apple to switch technology bases at any point, leaving the competitor with a reduced ability to reclaim customers.

4. Apple doesn’t need an LLM that competes directly with GPT-4. A key aspect of Apple Intelligence is to use personal information (e.g., calendar events, contacts, journal entries, health information, workout schedules, reminders, etc.) to feed context to tailored AI models for specific types of assistance. LLMs are not well-suited for this purpose; they are designed for general-purpose text generation and understanding. At this point, it isn't clear that Apple needs much of anything from ChatGPT except the marketing buzz.

5. The AI market is developing in a way that appears to mirror search engines. With numerous LLMs offering very similar capabilities, it makes sense for Apple to offload general information requests to a third-party service. This approach helps Apple avoid the regulatory scrutiny that would likely follow if they developed their own system to compete with ChatGPT.

6. In the future, we are likely to see Apple offer users the ability to select a default LLM service other than ChatGPT. If they don’t, the EU and DOJ would likely bring an antitrust case against them. Given that Google pays Apple $12 billion to be the default search engine in Safari, it’s unlikely that Apple will pay ChatGPT to be the default LLM in Siri.

I don't believe it is wise to conclude at this point that ChatGPT has something unique to offer Apple. If Apple is paying ChatGPT anything, it won't be for long.

It’s opt in. We don’t live in the world of 10 years ago. You can disable things today.

I doubt you'll be able to disabled Apples implantation, it's fundamental to how the system works. That would be like saying you just don't want any new features, fine, stay on iOS17 until it's no longer supported. It'd be an odd things to disable and I don't know why anyone is even thinking that way - it's like saying you don't want the new calculator app, and you don't want Photos to do any identification of images etc.

And hopefully you have the latest hardware so it can make sense for your use case. Does anyone know if the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will get Apple Intelligence? If the answer is yes, I’m curious how Apple will spin it explaining how the 15 with an A16 gets it while my 14 Pro with the same A16 does not.
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think I heard that the current phones, only the Pro's can support it but when the 16's come out later this year, the whole lineup will.

Branding AI as Appel Intelligence, on a platform that enjoys a ridiculously MASSIVE user base, is quietly the most brilliant thing they announced yesterday. It's like Google owning search, becoming a verb - "Just Google it." For the majority of Apple users, "AI" will now mean "an Apple thing." Like it (or not), fancy as you had hoped (or not), the adoption rate will be astronomical. It will be auto-adopted by tech bros, soccer moms, kids, grandparents, small businesses, executives, auto-makers, developers, etc. - and there's no turning back.

It'll be interesting to see how this all shakes out. Should be fun.

Agree with you 100%!

Ah yeah, but who is actually going to be buying a high power Mac for gaming, which has zero upgradeable parts, and costs a fortune, when they can build a gaming PC for much much cheaper, and with 100% upgradeable parts, sourced from any cheap parts shop? It doesn't matter if ALL games work on Mac, the user base simply isn't going to choose Apple's profit model over an PC that is upgradeable with parts that are 1/8th the cost of Apple's RAM/SSD prices. It ain't happening. All that bringing AAA games to Mac will achieve, is giving casual gamers the option of running them on their existing Macs.

Counter to my own argument, is the possibility of playing FPV games with a high quality 3D vision, which will make games such as racing games actually realistic, as the inability to judge distance with 2D is a major reality killer. Counter to that counter, is all it will take is a non-Apple brand to make a similarly high quality 3D headset, and the ball is back in PC's court.

Few. Most people who buy high power Macs do so to maximize their productivity.

However, for those who have Macs for "it just works" and the Apple ecosystem, Apple Silicon that can game at 1080p/1440p/4K competently (60 fps or more) is a very nice plus to have.

The main phrase I noticed in the keynote was "our goal of replacing your wallet" and it reminded me of the total control system of programmable currency that the head of the bank of international settlements in Basel, Switzerland talks about in a recorded clip captured in this interview with Catherine Austin Fitts.

Agreed.

FYI: Apple dropped the "it just works" slogan many years ago. Along with the actual reliable quality of "it just works". Now it's more like "it mostly just works".

The 60fps thing is quite a limitation from a gamer's perspective. These days, a true gamer would consider anything less than 144fps to be poor quality. Same with any screen with a response time of more than 5ms. Top gaming monitors these days have 240fps and 1ms response time.

Looks like the share price is dropping likely back to what it was to the previous announcement, again ultimately it comes to how many devices they going sell. At least this year/short-term I don't see the AI is enough to upgrade until they announce its coming the base models but even with there's also other things also playing apple being in my opinion only:
  • Decline in China sales (also AI will likely be heavily restricted in China + Chatgpt is banned to not to even justify the upgrade)
  • Other Devices:
    • Macbooks: Majority of apple users who have already upgraded to laptop M1/M2 chips unlikely to upgrade again as these computers are working just fine. Competition will heat up in PC market as the new snapdragon elite chips is now competitive silicon chips and you can get similar specs at a cheaper price. Also this Snapdragon first generation so only going to get better. Given this time Apple cant just hike up the price to offset the decline esp having actual competition now. My gut for this year sales will decline for macbooks.
    • Ipads: IpadOS 18 was a joke, unless you are in the market for a new consumer tablet based on what you can do on the Ipad people would either stick to what they got or perhaps people wanting more from their tablets will now look at alternatives again with the new snap dragon chips coming out. My gut again is a decline in sales for tablets.
    • Apple Vision: Early adopter at this stage so don't see it being a bigger seller
  • Services: Not sure about this one certainly an area though where apple could slightly increase service charges to boost revenue just because of the base users who are unlikely going to switch.
  • Inflation: In general with inflation high everyone is feeling the pinch and I think in general if their current devices aint broke people less likely to upgrade.

Again time will tell. I reckon though Qualcomm chips is a good buy though.

When will we get the next AAPL all time high posting? It crossed $225 today and has closed at all time high three of the past four days (or all four...would have to check), and quite possibly today. Maybe wait for $250 for the next post. Or becomes a 4T company. All I know is I'm still a happy investor.

Me too! People kept telling me to sell but I held on and glad I did. I may take some off the table though cuz you know what they say, "Pigs get slaughtered" lol
