Very impractical. I have three homepods and rarely see the top of any of them. As others have said, fix Siri to make it a better product. For me, Siri is okay with music requests, but being sent to the phone for a basic wiki type of response is frustrating. It would be just as frustrating to send the answer to its screen on top of the HomePod on the other side of the room.

The best use case may be using the screen to be able to make it a stand alone device (set it up without an iPhone, for example). A screen on top wouldn't be useful at all for most use cases.

I'm tending to agree with the frustrations with Siri.

For what I use her for, she works fine 99% of the time, but why can't you ask Apple TV's Siri what the weather is, or for directions between two places?

This segregation of apps and functionality across devices has been bizarre. No Calculator on iPad.. still... I mean, why?

Siri should work equally across all devices.

That’s because you had nothing to look at until…
That’s not the reason. Most people aren’t sitting right next to their HomePods where they can read it easily without moving. I have one on a nightstand and can’t see the top without getting out of bed. They need to come out with a different version to make this work.. similar to an echo show. That would sacrifice sound quality, but maybe some could live with that trade off. Nothing wrong with having a HomePod with great sound and a different one for the kitchen for YouTube and that kind of thing.

That screen gonna be larger then because it can’t be screen on the current HomePod and I don’t see the use case for this either way

If Apple put a display on the top of the speaker pointing up at the ceiling, instead of the side of the device where it will be visible from anywhere else in the room, then you can add this to the growing list of absolute design farts in Apple's portfolio, along with the Magic Mouse USB port being underneath the mouse, the Apple Pencil having to stick out of the charging port like an antenna, and the PILE of dongles for everything (especially the one so that you can use the headphone jack and charge the phone at the same time).

I realize this is subjective and just my opinion but - hopefully they sound more like the original HomePod. I have a stereo pair of both the OG and gen 2. The OGs are noticeably better. The gen 2s sound hollow in comparison.

I don’t understand the purpose of this, especially a screen on the top - I have Homepods up on shelves - they work great.

Why do I want to walk over, stretch up to look at the screen? What extra functionality is a screen giving me that I can’t ask Siri to answer?

Said it before and I'll say it again.
It's a stupid location to place a screen.

It's a speaker, you place anywhere in a room and it beams out sound. Having to stand right next to it, and look down onto the top, to actually see the screen is dumb.

Yes, it looks fine in Photo's and will look fine, in a demo of the product, but it's not suitable to have a screen facing the ceiling in real life usage.
It's brought to you by a company that brought you:

They need to make is Left-Right compatible to the 1st Gen HomePods AND the 2nd Gen... that way those of us with stereo pair do not have to replace both of them to preserve the stereo effect.

And then they can make the Minis available to use as rear ATMOS sound speakers.

Or develop stereo surround setup…that way I would get 2 more to make a stereo 4

While I agree with most of what you said, press CMD+Space and type your equation.

This. R&D money should rather flow into pushing voice commands/ Siri tech forward instead of turning a primarily voice controlled speaker into a hybrid voice & screen one.
These are different teams and both can happen at the same time. Based on rumors both are happening.

If they do the former I'll be very surprised.

But on topic, a display for a Homepod seems pretty redundant to me. Where my pairs are placed all over my home I've never, ever had a reason to (nor are they placed to conveniently do that) look at any of my Homepods. I just yell at them and expect them to get on with it

Now what would be super cool is a holographic display that appears to float over the Homepod...

I have the original HomePod on my mantel. I don't think I've ever looked at the top screen since the first day I got it.
No reason to look at it if the top doesn't have a screen or additional functionality. I think this new one will appeal to people who will place the HP in a more central area where they can more easily interact with it while the non-screen ones will appeal to people who place it in a corner or the mantle in your case and use Siri or something else to control the music.

Don't most place their homepods somewhere that they don't plan on touching all of the time? This seems like one of those "do it just to do it" things instead of doing something to actually make the homepods better. How about being able to connect with an hdmi cord (let's be real airplay is good most of the time but still has issues with not working properly (like one speaker playing while the other doesn't when paired together). Also, let's let people use the full-sized and mini homepods together. Would love to put a stereo pair of full size with a stereo pair of minis for a true surround sound environment.
