It's a stupid location to place a screen.

It's a speaker, you place anywhere in a room and it beams out sound. Having to stand right next to it, and look down onto the top, to actually see the screen is dumb.

Yes, it looks fine in Photo's and will look fine, in a demo of the product, but it's not suitable to have a screen facing the ceiling in real life usage.

yep. Many will have these on their SHELVES.. not on the kitchen counter where Advertising company thinks they will be

Please let the next generation HomePod with touchscreen be like an iPad with a giant speaker attached and not this depicted circular display on the same design. 🙏🙏

I have always thought that the real "eco system" might see where devices could be used together. A pod should be designed to accept an iPad or iPhone and work together while being a charger.

Seems like you should buy different speakers which re moe suited to your purpose, because it's like you're trying to turn the iPhone into a traditional landline.
So being able to play wirelessly or hardwire (which has 0 latency issues) is turning the iPhone into a landline? Good lord the way people will bend over backwards for a product with an apple logo on it is mind-blowing... It wouldn't need to be hardwired if 1. Siri wasn't hot garbage and 2. their implementation of airplay didn't constantly have issues (and before you say "it's your internet") no it's not since it is a well-known issue.

I have three HomePods now: an original in the kitchen/dining room and two small ones where sound isn’t the priority but Home control is.

None of them are in locations I can see easily and I like that. They’re unobtrusive and much more tasteful around the house that way.

I have family that have the larger Alexa speaker + front facing screen combos and they don’t use the screen anymore. They’re not my style but they’re not in my home.

But what I find interesting is that family members do with them what I can do with the HomePods: set timers and ask about the weather so they can hear it read back to them as they leave the house.

Maybe adding a screen makes sense for others, but in this rumored form factor I have a hard time understanding how this would ever become natural. But it could move units just because people *think* they’ll use it.

Maybe they could do something useful like buffer a few songs ahead? Rather than have the internet drop out for 2 seconds and stop the song playing dead in its tracks or have it start stuttering? (More an issue for places with crap internet connections, but still.., why not?!?!)

Is this a joke? What’s the point in having a silly touchscreen just to control music playback. Do it properly like an echo show or nest hub or don’t bother.

I'd want a way to integrate into existing audio hardware - in other words an input. I fail to use the use for a screen.

Until that happens we have Sonos products I guess.

The can barely push the regular one as is. How do they expect to sell one that costs even more?

I understand your concern that the top position of the display may be of little use for people who place their speakers high up. It’s possible that the information will just transfer to your iPhone in that case when you enable it in the settings. I keep my speakers lower so that wouldn’t be an issue for me. I guess Apple is just looking for a way (new feature) to make the HomePod more appealing and/or find a way to justify a price hike.

We need a x1000000 smarter Siri, not more screens!
This summarizes it best. Siri has not lived up to its "personal assistant" goals and Apple is now playing catch-up with AI, which should have already been integrated into Siri. Few people care about a screen on their HomePod. A camera could be somewhat interesting given that many people in Apple's ecosystem use the HomePod as a TV speaker with their Apple TV (I just found out that a lot of people do this), and could help with answering calls from your TV/HomePod.

And honestly, the camera thing is grasping at straws. Improve to processor, implement AI and improve the sound quality. That's all the HomePod needs.

Dude relax. I dont own or plan on owning HomePods. You sound like you want to use HPs no matter if they dont meet your needs, which sounds more like bending over backwards to support an apple logo than anything you think I said does. Get the correct speakers for you needs… HPs aren’t that.

PS. I dont care if it is or is not your internet.

I'd rather this speaker become less smart.

Unless Apple can dramatically improve Siri, just give us a better dumb speaker with audio jacks and a built in battery for wireless use.

If only there was a battery powered option.

You could wait for this from Apple... but nary a rumor about it... or you could have it now- today- by stepping a little beyond the wall. Take a look at Sonos Move.

It sits on a little ring to charge (or for HP-like powered uses) and easily lifts off to take great sound anywhere. Like the Arc mentioned in the prior post, it has airplay 2, works with Apple Music (as well as over a hundred other services too) and you can use Siri to control it via the Siri in your AppleTV or iDevice or Mac. I have one myself and it is basically battery-capable HP with much greater flexibility.

If one is money-pinched, the prior generation is priced quite close to full-sized HP, though objective reviews for "latest & greatest" version 2 talk about both improved sound & battery life.

Doubts? Head for Best Buy or similar and give it a try- and listen- yourself.

I don't understand why anybody would want a homepod in the first place, let alone one with a screen on it.

Things with always-on microphones are NOT allowed in my house.
My take is I’m already trusting Apple to not eavesdrop (other than listening for Hey Siri) since I have a bunch of their other products with mics. What’s one more product if it also brings me a lot of utility?
