I get this but it just does not compute. People can use a computer, know what Twitter is, and learn how to buy bitcoin to give to a scammer.. it does not add up.

I've had 2FA active on my account for a while via SMS, but I used this as my breaking point to use an authentication app instead.

Unfortunately it appears that the functionality for that is currently busted, as it keeps giving me an error message.

Guess I'll try again tomorrow.

Unlikely to be a "hack". Twitter's been promoting an impending update to their API service, I'll bet my Bitcoin that the root cause stems from there. https://twitter.com/TwitterDev

* Disclaimer: I have no Bitcoins to bet. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not a hack in a traditional sense of a compromised password, but a hack nonetheless. I have had a problem with twitter where my account shows I am following people that I did not perform. It just keeps happening over and over. Their security is atrocious.

not shocking apple can not keep our data and information private or protected they simply are strong enough for the power they have
Not to pile on, but I’ll pile on. Most people around here don’t bother to read a referenced article. Many people around here don’t bother to read the MR article. You couldn’t even manage the title.

Twitter is aware of the issue and investigating.

The hackers even changed the bio of Twitter CEO.

I’ve read that Twitter only supports SMS codes, not real 2FA. If so, accounts be an be compromised by redirecting the phone number they’re registered to.
2FA is a second factor that is something you know (name of first girlfriend), something you have (a mobile phone that can receive an SMS or a hardware token), or something you are (Biometric). SMS codes are very real 2FA.

I highly, highly, highly doubt that all of these accounts were sim swapped.

oh, and Twitter definitely does support hardware tokens.

edit: fixed a goofy quoting problem

Twitter is feeling like BlockBuster: the writing is on the wall, ripe for any competent competition to come in and swoop them up.

Will make you wonder how they were ever a thing, like dial-up AOL or Netscape or instant messenger or dumb phones and pagers
I know it sounded better in your head but wondering how those technologies were ever a thing is like people driving in cars wondering how horses were ever a thing.
