It's almost completely likely at this point it's directly related to Twitter's security.This would require redirecting dozens, if not hundreds of phone numbers with numerous carriers. That's incredibly unlikely to be what happened here.
Chances are they all use a 3rd party tool like Hootsuite and someone compromised Hootsuite and then has API access to any account connected to it, or they compromised Twitter directly.

That just wouldn't work from a technical standpoint. Even a ML algorithm would still end up deleting innocent tweets.i'm surprised Twitter doesn't have an emergency blacklist that autodeletes tweets with certain words/phrases.

Update 2: Twitter appears to have disabled all tweets from verified accounts, so no one with a verified account is able to tweet at this time.
