I'm not surprised by this. I was in NYC last week, and literally everyone I saw in public had iphones, with the vast majority being Iphone 12/13 Pros or Pro Max's.

Agreed, its stupid and concerning that the dr office did not provide a secure way to upload the pictures. The app from my Dr. office has at least a secure way to upload files within their app ... still I would have to take the photo on my phone to upload it there and then it might still synchronize to the cloud (iCloud, Google Photo or whatever the user uses) unless I remember to turn off backup, take picture, upload picture and then turn backup on again.

However, triggering that alert is not my main issue with that case ... the problem is that Google refuses to turn on the accounts again even after aw enforcement verified that this was not child porn, no harm was done and all was good. What the hack? Locked out of your digital life and no way to reactive it even though you did nothing wrong? Full automation without human responsibility is the problem. Hope Apple will handle that better (remains to be seen)
Very much agreed.

I'd hope that when, eventually, I have the option of an app for my doctor, it will be able to directly control the camera and upload the photo(s), and leave nothing to be found/uploaded to iCloud, etc. (Obviously, giving full control over sending of each frame.) That might need a bit of attention to detail.

If customers don't want to use Google Search, there is always the option of switching to another search engine, like what I have done. Though DDG is essentially a white-label Bing, and had its share of controversy until recently, I believe.

The thing is - Apple defines privacy as giving consumers the choice of whether they want to be tracked by developers or not (hence ATT). It's the people in these forums who choose to subscribe to their own extreme definition of privacy, and then blame Apple for not living up to those arbitrary standards that Apple never agreed to adhere to in the first place.

It's a straw man argument through and through.

And the annoying thing is that this will probably set the tone of Apple criticism for the current decade. From 2010 to 2019, the narrative was that Apple's ecosystem was too "closed" and limited and people would abandon their iPhones in droves for cheaper and more "capable" android handphones. But over the past three to four years, things have changed. Apple cynicism focusing on a weakening ecosystem no longer generates the views and clicks as people don’t buy it. People can see right through the cynicism and know that it is wrong. Apple is stronger than ever.

Instead, Apple cynicism has clearly shifted to focus on how the company is too strong, and too focused on making money to the detriment of the consumer. Everything Apple does is said to be done with profit (and only profit) in mind. If Apple tries to enforce its rules around App Store in-app purchases, the move is framed as Apple turning the screws on profit generation. Because Apple takes a cut from Google, they are not serious about protecting my privacy (which I maintain is categorically untrue). ATT is not about protecting user privacy but another way of generating revenue by means of selling ads. Apple is trying to gouge its users by having the MBA ship with "only" 8gb ram. Or force handset upgrades by not supporting the iPhone 7 with iOS 16.

So no, I don't think there is anything wrong with Apple taking money from Google (for the reason that I stated above). There is some sweet irony in that while Android has a larger market share than iOS worldwide, and for all the talk of how google services are presumably so indispensable and Apple would be screwed if Google were to ever withhold their services / apps from the iOS platform, Google still earns more from iOS than its own android platform, and has to basically pay Apple to ensure this continued access.
I'm not saying that Apple do not protects customer privacy. But it's obvious that Apple send a confusing message when they talk so much about privacy, but at the same time they make business with Google to make their search engine default. Would be far better if they supported a service that focus in privacy, like Duck Duck Go, or even develop their own engine.

If we consider than anyone buying a cheapo phone to leave in their car for emergencies, or a burner (for whatever nefarious purposes), will almost certainly get an Android, I suspect 50% of really active, genuinely carried and used phones was reached ages ago.

Yeah. Privacy. Talk about planned CSAM and rumours about ads coming in.

If anything, it shows power of marketing, which Google totally lacks and fails on.
Android already does CSAM to any photos synced to the cloud, pretty much most cloud photo hosting companies/servers are going to do this. Check this out https://www.missingkids.org/supportus/our-corporate-partners

Use Microsoft cloud services? Google cloud services? anything Meta related? what about TikTok? Ever upload any youtube videos? Upload to Reddit? Twitter? guess what CSAM was used there are plenty more and I don't think you fully understand how exactly CSAM works. Google probably has the most invasive version of CSAM given the most recent with a man sending an image(s) to his kids doctor for diagnosis. Just to give you a little more info though https://www.theverge.com/2022/8/21/...-csam-scanning-account-deletion-investigation
Google alone reported over 600,000 cases in 2021 alone.

This leads me to ask....If Apple does continue to implement CSAM what are you going to do? Where are you going to go? because unless it is back to a "dumb" phone or completely no social media or cloud based services besides personally hosted ones good luck

My wife became an iOS user after nonstop problems with her Android that we had to spend a lot of time fixing. Slow downs, unexpected reboots, apps that wouldn't launch, network drops, etc., etc. She's had none of that since switching. I suspect she's like most users out there who want a phone that works, not a weekend hobby.

I'm not a fan of either Android or iOS. Both are not private in any way from US Gov agencies and departments and approved corporations. But iOS does have, at the moment, more protection against independent scammers than Android.
Have we got a phone for you!

I wonder if this is why Google has been pushing so hard on the RCS front lately. From my understanding outside of the US everyone uses platforms like WhatsApp, Signal, or Telegram. However, iMessage is so popular in the US and driving iPhone adoption.

Too many android variations/skins vs iOS consistency and the time it takes for android vs iOS devices to depreciate

even a 93-year-young granny can put down her iPhone Xs and start using the latest iPhone 13 or 14 with no issues.... everything just works. (observed this many times)

can't say that about Android phones... not even when they are both Samsung phones.(speaking from personal experience, Note 20 Ultra users may not know how to use all the features of older/newer flagship Samsung phones)

Whataboutism is not a defense.
It’s mandated by governments around the world. I don’t know why people seem to think that this is a thing that Google, Apple, Facebook, pretty much any platform that shares images themselves dreamt up.

This shows that when cost is less of a factor that most people will choose iPhone. In the US most phones are now sold with 0% APR carrier financing, so many consumers can walk into a store and get the latest iPhone by only paying the sales tax upfront.
One of these years maybe we will actually drive down to Dover to get them so they are truly $0 upfront. Just need to plan other stuff to do while there.

Sure, let’s do the same for cars and houses too!
Those might be the only two to keep it and possibly just houses. If credit were gone, companies would have to be way more competitive with pricing. A less expensive car may not be so tough to save for especially without CC debt, but a house you would have to save for as long as a mortgage to buy it up front.

In the end, people are disappointed by the slow rate of Android updates on most Android phones outside of the Google Pixel models. At least with an iPhone, you get timely updates for several years (if I still had my old iPhone X, it would get the iOS 16.0 update).
Yes if we even did try Android again, it would be a Google one. Even our GS8+s bought shortly after launch were Oreo Coming "Soon (TM)" forever, and the security ones were slacking too.

Not surprising, and understates the install base as many people are buying used iPhones in addition to the new sales counted here. Something like 8 out of 10 under 21 year olds have an iOS device.

iMessage creates a social network that, at least in the USA, most people belong. It creates real, genuine pressure to have an iPhone. Apple knows this.

Android is in a tough spot. Google's value prop has always been taking gobs of information and using that to offer value (you have a package coming - your cable bill is due - your flight had a gate change - its your sister's birthday) and there is just a really tough line to walk to do that kind of info harvesting while also protecting privacy. Drop the harvesting and suddenly a lot of Android's magic is lost. Keep the harvesting and risk alienating users.

Android updates are STILL horrible (although Samsung has really stepped up) and so there are many different android versions even on 'modern' phones. It is quite possible to buy brand new Android phone and have it be one year behind on OS versions and six months behind on security patches. Also, there isn't one version of Android. Using a Samsung phone is like using a whole different OS, complete with their own App Store, their own phone, contacts, notes, pay, browser, photos, etc. Which creates even more fragmentation.

And lastly, because Android supports very inexpensive phones, it can't help but be saddled by the impression those phones create (bad) and while every iPhone made was built to a high standard, the same can't be said for every. android phone.

Where I think we have to honestly give Samsung credit is that they ARE out-innovating Apple on hardware. The overall experience with hardware and software is a different question, but they are ahead of Apple on hardware. Folding phones. Phones with Stylus. Phones with periscope zoom. Phones with in-display fingerprint. Super-fast charging support. Reverse wireless charging. Under-display cameras. These hardware innovations may not matter to most people, but they are nonetheless real and Samsung is well within its rights to crow about them.

I'm not sure what Google will offer with the upcoming Pixel 7 but right now, Samsung actually provides more years/generations of Android OS updates than Google Pixel.

Overall, however, the Android OS update average for U.S. phones is around half what it is for iPhone but that's part of what you're paying for with the iPhone's typically higher retail price. It also helps give iPhone a better resale value than average Android phones.

This x1000.

People whining about Apple announcing plans for CSAM while ignoring the fact everyone else has been doing it for many years now.

Google is horrible in that they don’t just use the database of known images. They use machine learning to try and identify potentially harmful images. Which is how these false positives occur.

But Apple tries to implement CSAM in a better way than competitors and with enhanced privacy features and people scream bloody murder? The hypocrisy is truly next level.
