I wonder if this to try to blunt the increasing popularity of Microsoft's Surface Pro 3?

Change for the sake of change, I imagine.

I'm already semi-unhappy with the integrated button into the trackpads. I quite often second-guess myself when clicking. A dedicated button never gave me that trouble. And I prefer the tactile feedback. Please, for the love of Jobs, don't ruin the perfect Mac...

It took me forever to get used to the integrated button on the trackpad. On the other hand, it would be nice to have a quiet trackpad button. I'd be interested in what Apple comes up with here. Considering the trackpad can be used by touch alone as-is, I'd imagine that they'd come up with something that's easier to use.

Was 11" too small and 13" too big for some people?

Exaclty. When you don't innovate any more ...all you can do is elongate. ...why?

Cos we can! And. By golly ... we damned well will too!

You folks better get ready for some mighty big ... high pollutin' rootin' tootin', shrinkin', stretchin' and thinnin' of our trusty iPhone in 2015 ... or I'm not Steve Jobs.

And we can certainly milk his legacy of boundary pushing for a wee bit longer .... For now ...

Just what we need......

Yeah just what we need a thinner MacBook Air. Of course there will be no room for connecting peripherals…...you will have to use the Jedi mind trick in order to connect any USB device.

I find my 13" MBP the smallest one can get without sacrificing too much screen estate for reasonable notebook work. But of course, that depends on the job.

I would personally love to have something like 14" or 16" to choose from. 17" is too big, less than 13" probably too small.

If this has a Retina Display, and powerful enough specs to drive all of those extra pixels from a low powered CPU (compared to 13inch MacBook Pro Retina), it has the potential to be a really great product/upgrade for some people.

thin thin thin

What do Supermodels and Apple have in common ?

It's become an obsession.
There's nothing wrong with the MBA design of the last 4 years.
Akin to the iPhone 6, I'm voting for longer battery life instead of ever thinner devices.... that could bend :)

I just hope they don't pull a MacMini'14 refresh and degrade the current specs in the new MBAs for the sake of thinness and silence. Or does the fan in the current MBA's bother anybody ?

I'd love a thinner, fanless MBA, but I'm afraid what you said above is how we're going to get it - at least the first iteration of it.

Not going to happen, the 13" rMBP is already a slouch thanks to all the Yosemite eye candy. I really dont see Apple pulling a speed Houdini with something far thinner and fanless.

That thing is a mess. Mostly due to Windows and the hybrid touch / click UI. But even the hardware design has issues.

It's a beautiful object though.

Please NO! The 13" is as small as my eyes can take for a few hours of use. Don't ruin the Air and make it 12" only :(

I think so.

Maybe they will discontinue the 11". I wonder how many of those they actually sell. I don't think I've ever seen one in the wild. I'm in New York and in coffee shops probably 80% of the laptops I see are Macs. Maybe even a higher percentage than that. I see more old 17" ones than 11". The 11" is light, but besides that it is inferior to the 13" because of screen size. But if they make the 12" even lighter, then what is the point of the 11"?

What does ultra thin mean? It can only be as thin as the I/O will allow.

For me 'Tap to click' (=no physical button needed) is straight from heaven. Hard clicking is incredibly annoying and way less fluid once you've gotten used to 'Tap to click'.
On the other hand 'Press and hold physical click' when dragging files, windows etc, is something I can't seem to unlearn the need for.

I believe it when I see it too.... ..

Seems Apple goes though the same process... either delays or some sort of shortage due to manufacturing can't make them quick enough..

The thought of being popular :)

I wonder if Android suffers the same.

Apple said the MBA was ultra-thin too..... so i can't expect any more than that........ The rest is just history...

But hey, what do I know.... maybe it will be so ultra thin, u can bend it

I think not much chance there. In the U.S. the 13" laptop size is the default standard it seems. My office uses Window PCs and we can pretty much have IT order whatever we want. Everyone picks out a 13" as the best combination of screen size and portability.

But I've read that in some other countries the 12" size is popular.

The 11" is the one that doesn't make sense to me. Too large to cary around unless you have a bag. And once you have a bag, there is little point in not carrying a 13" and getting much more screen real estate. Also price difference between the two is trivial.

The Pro is the way to go in the U.S. anyone now since you get the retina screen.

Hmm....I never see the Surface out in the wild in my neck of the woods. And the Microsoft store right across from the Apple store is usually empty while the Apple store is full of people.

I love my MBA 11". Bought it in 2013 as a secondary machine. It has very quickly become my primary machine. My iBeast is getting on in age (5 years old) but it still runs like a charm. However it is not very portable. For me the small form factor makes it so much easier for portability. I can be sitting on the head working on a paper while coaxing last nights dinner through it's birthing canal. Very efficient use of time.

On a side note I don't seem to have any issues of anyone wanting to use my MBA...

if it will be like the Surface Pro 3

with a real Pen and touch, full Version of OneNote or something equal to it
4k 60Hz Display Port enabled graphic
usb 3 port, micro sdhc slot, detachable keyboard (people drinking coffee ...)
I will probably think about ... but the Surface Pro 3 is so good and 2015 there will be a Surface Pro 4 with Windows 10
