Conflict? Sounds more and more like this is about *one* product with all those specs, not two separate ones. Which, to be honest seems like the more natural product progression.

Risk of cannibalization is a short term issue during platform changes and mobility is far more important than raw power for many, coupled with the fact that even an 11" MBA is quite a powerful computer today.

That is exactly what I was thinking all along. With rumors of a 12" iPad and a 12" MBA with conflicting details that don't 100% fit either... I am of the impression that these two devices are in fact ONE.

Think like Asus line of Transformer Tablets/Notebooks or the MS Surface Pro. But also not like these like at all... but in the typical Apple manner... that we, right now, just cannot predict.

Ultra Thin 12" Retina Air Big Mac

So this would add some substance to the rumoured hybrid iOS/OSX.
iOS for Touch, OSX for Desktop environment!

Surely this is going to replace the entire current MacBook Air line.

It seems ridiculous that they would simultaneously stock 11", 12" and 13" versions of the MacBook Air, with the 12" in multiple colours. I predict the 11" and 13" will be sailing into the sunset (although maybe not immediately on launch)

Also, I think that the 13" Air currently cannibalises sales of the 13" MacBook Pro. I for one bought the 13" Air over the 13" Pro a few years back as it seemed fine for my needs at the time. Had there just been a 12" though I'd have probably deemed it too small.

About to upgrade to a nice 15" Pro though! ;)

For 13" the options are odd

13" Air - light - reasonable resolution, but less powerful than the rest
13" MBP - Powerful, but screen resolution the 90's says hello to
13" Retina - light, powerful, decent resolution - expensive

If one has to go I'd say the 13" MBP is it's dated and doesn't fit with the rest.

12" is an odd one though.

I hope there's a companion 14 inch screen; I think that might be an ideal screen size for me. I like the portability of the 13 inch I have now, and a 15 inch seems a bit too big.. With a 12 inch on the horizon, I think a 14 inch would be a natural. More useful screen real estate, but not a deal killer in terms of footprint.

I wouldn't want a smaller screen than the 13 inch.

Wouldn't it be cool if for example you open a pages document on an "ipad". but then you click the ipad in the chassis and the back ground switches from ios to osx?

I have a rmbp "15 but I'm looking forward to this! I kinda regret getting a rmbp "15.

I think a thin ultra book for on the road and a good iMac would suit my needs much better.

Thats what I think too mate, I have a nice spec Mac Pro at home for working so a Retina Air to compliment that would just complete my setup!

the real question is..... can it bend?

lol. just kidding. i can't wait for it! time to upgrade soon!

It makes sense for Apple to release different colour options for this. Gotta keep people tempted and always wanting new Macs—but a space grey/black or gold Macbook would look like **** in no time.

A fan-less macbook? I feel like it's going to take a huge hit in performance/specs just to decrease heating issues.

After seeing Adobe demo some of their products on the Microsoft Surface Pro, I'm beginning to warm up the idea of a two-in-one device (and even a stylus). I know Apple have tried to tell us that we don't want a product like this... But I think the time is right to re-evaluate that.
Good luck with that!

My thoughts exactly. This might turn out to be a Surface competitor. Apple would certainly do themselves a lot of good to turn the iPad into an even more capable machine.

Quite frankly, I couldn't care less if it's thinner than the MacBook Air. BUT GIVE US A THINNER BEZEL and more display area vs. overall size of laptop.

The Surface needs to be become competition for Apple to consider it a threat.

Whilst the Surface is a nice bit of kit, it really doesn't need to exist. Microsoft need to get used to the idea of what a tablet is, if you need a surface for your tablet needs then just get an ultrabook.

Why 12"? I love my MBA with 13" (never considered the 11") but I had hopes Apple would probably make a 14" rMBA with smaller bezels.. it would easily fit into the current model.

But 12? meh......

I'm up for it, whenever it comes out. I travel a TON for work, and would prefer to go back to a MacBook Air. While I like the MacBook Pro, the extra pound makes a difference since I carry it as a second PC along with my work PC. I'm not eligible for a new work PC for another 18 months or so, at which point I'll get an Ultrabook, but until then I have a fairly thick, though fairly lightweight Windows notebook.

If it's in a similar size case to the current 11.6" model, I'd be all over it in an instant.

Perhaps the "iPad Pro" and "12"" MacBook pro will be the same product in the form of a convertible laptop.

I think and hope you're right..

I had a Sony Vaio Flip 11" for a while and it was great - though a little small and obviously not a great OS.. But it's great to have a fairly large tablet for video watching and flip out the keyboard when you need it. The only reason I got rid of it was that it was recalled (exploding batteries) and Sony stopped making PCs at that time so I couldn't get a new one.

I think the convertible category just needs some 'apple' to bring down the weight and increase running time. I can see the potential, it just needs Apple to make it perfect.

oh,,, that's disappointing ....lol

Not unless the robots can take over .....

I wouldn't use anything below 13" too small that far away.

Maybe good for you young kids.

Oh good, slimmer. Everyone keeps asking for slimmer and not more power/battery...

Is it some weird space-time continuum thing going on that means for every percent Jony Ive gets fatter his devices have to get slimmer?

Be thankful it's not the pro. This though, is why I don't think the lineup will merge.
