Be thankful it's not the pro. This though, is why I don't think the lineup will merge.

What I don't understand is that any designer worth his salt would have taken a step back, looked at the current ranges and made this a 12" iPad + keyboard clamshell design that locks together to function as a laptop or simply detaches the touch-screen iPad section if you want to keep it basic. It just makes sense and would be very popular, far more so than a mere laptop will be.

I hope there's a companion 14 inch screen; I think that might be an ideal screen size for me. I like the portability of the 13 inch I have now, and a 15 inch seems a bit too big.. With a 12 inch on the horizon, I think a 14 inch would be a natural. More useful screen real estate, but not a deal killer in terms of footprint.

Yes - maybe a 12 inch MacBook Air, a 14 inch MacBook Pro (compromise between screen size / portability) as well as a 16 inch MacBook Pro for those which missing the old 17 inch model. Only 3 models - the savings for Apple should be invested to lower the price for the Retina displays ....

The Surface needs to be become competition for Apple to consider it a threat.

Whilst the Surface is a nice bit of kit, it really doesn't need to exist. Microsoft need to get used to the idea of what a tablet is, if you need a surface for your tablet needs then just get an ultrabook.

This.

You beat me to it. One line 12", 14", 16".

I was just thinking the same thing.

Perhaps Apple will be using the no fan Intel guts or possibly a multi-core A9 or even A10 64-bit CPU.

And more than 1GB of RAM.

no....1GB is enough

I bet it bends.... :D

I do pray that they keep the MacBook Pro the same thickness as it it now and keep the dedicated GPU etc. would be a shame if they ruined that machine in the name of thinness.

Will be interesting to see just how this new 12" model performs though.

I wouldn't want a smaller screen than the 13 inch.

The 13 inch air could have a 15 inch display in the same footprint if they shrunk the bezel.

Oh good, slimmer. Everyone keeps asking for slimmer and not more power/battery...

Is it some weird space-time continuum thing going on that means for every percent Jony Ive gets fatter his devices have to get slimmer?

Apple sells more than one laptop model. There will always be demand for something that is lighter.

My thoughts exactly. This might turn out to be a Surface competitor. Apple would certainly do themselves a lot of good to turn the iPad into an even more capable machine.

Why would Apple want to compete with a failure?

I bet it bends.... :D

If it does, u can bet everyone will hear about it..

Everyone went crazy over to bending of the iPhone 6 Plus, but it's all crap, since it comes down to...u guessed it, the user.

Its interesting that like the like as slim Samsung phones never have this much hype, or even appearance in any of this with the 6 Plus only a few of them do.

So, if the 12' Mac is going the same "bendy" way...... we may as well take shelter.

I don't know about that... where I work, the Surface Pro 3 is attracting attention from people who previously wouldn't have considered anything but an iPad and don't want to carry a laptop. Although I'm skeptical about some of the claims in the Digitimes rumor, a very lightweight 12" laptop might be an attractive alternative, especially if its power consumption is low enough to guarantee great battery life.

I bet it's not a MBA at all, but rather some larger iPad "Pro" with a keyboard cover.. You know, exactly like the Surface tablet, but better.

It won't run OSX either, there's a limit to the thickness of a computer in which they put a X86 processor and all required components.

i don't see how a 12" MBA would fit with the rumor of a 12" iPad running iOS and OSX

both will cannibalize each others in almost the same market segment

Apple shouldn't go where MS failed

Touch screen on a laptop? Didn't Apple already dismiss that as a poor interface?

Now Apple follows the market, which is both good and bad.

Here's hoping for the headless iMac - it's only been a 15 year wait.

Yes because 0.5"+0.5" = 2" :roll eyes:

The MBA's bezel is so wide precisely because the screen is so thin. Reducing it all the way to the edge would make it much more fragile as the edge is thickened for strength. Assuming the retina MBA would contain a glassed LCD like the current ones then it could shrink the bezel by some margin without compromising the integrity – thus fitting an 12" screen in a 13.5" diagonal chassis.

As far as thinness of the machine, I expect them to shave off the swollen underside and keep the same angled shape/dimensions visible from the sides. Personally, I don't want one if fanless.

Possibly, the extensions introduced in iOS 8 should allow apps to create a more complete computing environment. I find the iPad frustratingly close to a laptop replacement but some tasks are just a bit too fiddly.

Tim Cook did say that they are working on products that are not even rumored yet. If this really is one product that is a hybrid 12" iPad Pro/MacBook then that would be true. Because all the rumors keep pointing to those being 2 separate products, but every time we get more info the more it sounds like they're the same thing. Personally I find it hard to believe that Apple will merge the 2 but it's possible.

I've tried touch screens, we have a smart board in our office, I even remember those pens on some PCs back in the 80s. Touch screens on a computer display that's more or less vertical are annoying. Your arm gets tired and you keep having to shift your hand around to see what you're doing.

I'm thinking ARM here. Buy the time you clock on of Intelsat chips low enough to go fan less you will be in ARM performance territory. This especially if Apple has a high performance version of the A8 chip out there.

Surely this is going to replace the entire current MacBook Air line.

It seems ridiculous that they would simultaneously stock 11", 12" and 13" versions of the MacBook Air, with the 12" in multiple colours. I predict the 11" and 13" will be sailing into the sunset (although maybe not immediately on launch)

Also, I think that the 13" Air currently cannibalises sales of the 13" MacBook Pro. I for one bought the 13" Air over the 13" Pro a few years back as it seemed fine for my needs at the time. Had there just been a 12" though I'd have probably deemed it too small.

About to upgrade to a nice 15" Pro though! ;)
that makes sense.
The future lineup well be a retina 12" MacBook air, 13" and 15" retina MacBook pro.

For iOS yes.
For OSX you need 4 Gb as a minimum.
