Fanless? Wow. I'm not quite sure, I'd be willing to take a chance on a fanless laptop. Not given Apple's track record with heat management, i.e., hot laptops.

If the design includes USB Type-C, it was never coming out this year. Also, MagSafe will likely be killed off for USB Type C since it also supports Power Delivery 2.0 which allows for 100W power transfer across the wire. Probably a good chance it will support Thunderbolt 3 too with its new thinner port, since that's now the thickest port on the computer.

I'm semi-excited! I'm holding on to my 2012 MBA which is perfect until a 12" retina shows up. I feel Apple is slipping a bit though especially after seeing the iPhone 6. They went through a period of exceptional products and now not every product is exceptional but some still are. I'll have to wait and see what this thing is packing before buying.

I wonder what their pricing strategy would look like. Considering the components, I would imagine it starts under $1000.

$899 Maybe?

Well, at least it sounds like they'll be including an adapter for older USB devices and not just rendering them obsolete right out the gate.

Glad it isn't ARM.

Switching to Intel was one of the boldest and best component decisions Apple ever made. I seriously hope they will stay committed to the Intel platform – at least until the day when everything is browser/cloud based (if that happens).

I think Apple is in a better position to switch CPU architectures than back in 2005/2006. (And they wouldn't be switching, but adding.) These days "everyone" is using Xcode, Objective-C (or Swift), Apple's runtimes and frameworks, etc. That makes supporting a new CPU architecture pretty light-weight for developers. I don't even think they'll need a Rosetta-like mode to be able to run non-ARM software on an ARM Mac... we'll all just expect developers to release a version that supports ARM natively and developers pretty much will.

It wouldn't totally surprise me if this device was ARM from day one.

Calling it now, this will be a major hit. A retina screen in a very portable form factor... *drools*

With the A8 chip bridging the gap between our modern computer CPU's even closer, I am wondering when Apple will make the shift to the ARM platform. By doing so they won't be bound to Intel's schedule and it'll be possible to implement such things like TouchID even.

Yes 12" air is much more portable than 13" air

I still think this is the iPad Pro, but the leaks keep mistaking it for a laptop. I can't see a 3rd notebook line, nor do I see the MacBook Air going away....

IMHO this is not a new notebook line, rather this 12" will replace the 11" and the 13" as the NEW form factor for the Air.

Here I am trying to figure out which size iPhone I should own, which would affect which size (if any) iPad I want to complement it. Now tempting me with a 12" fanless retina laptop??

Excuse me while I contact my employer to direct deposit my paychecks to Apple.:apple:

Sounds pretty amazing, but as a rule, I try to avoid the first generation of major updates of Apple products. (Actually not a bad rule for most hardware...)

Take a look at how terrible the first Macbook Air was compared to the second generation, for instance...

I hope Apple sacrifices everything in the name of making it the Thinnest Notebook Yet. I want it to be a notebook computer when it's open, and I want it to slice red meat with closed. I want it to be too thin for ports, any ports. I want it to be so thin there are allegations of an eating disorder. I want it to be thinner than the Putin's explanation of the downed airplane. I want it to be thinner than the Grinch's heart. I want it to be so thin it actually weighs less than air.

Thinner is always better, Apple. Always. Better. Ever.

...The issue isn't support the issue is ARM is ****

iPhone 6+ and 12" macbook air I think ;)

USB Type C cable to Lightning will be annoying.

Being a similar connector on each end.

Is that sarcasm or are you being serious? :p
I can only see that as a positive, since it wont matter what you plug in. Unless you are referring to the amount of adapters we will need for other devices, then I can see where that might be annoying.

I'm definitely excited by the prospect off a fanless design. My last computer was a 1st gen MacBook Air, and after having owned an iPad I can't imagine dealing with the noise of fans and my constant paranoia of blocking it.

I mean, the next generations are already far better (in...well...pretty much every respect), but still...the fanless design of the iPad is so nice to have.

If this comes out, I'll definitely hold onto my good old 2011 MBA for at least one more generation, until all (or most of) the possible glitches are smoothed out... yeah, I know I sound boring, but this is mostly true with Apple products: you are getting a much better experience and a longer lasting product if you have a little patience (see: 2010 MBA, first iPad, first iPad mini, etc). I'm not saying you should wait forever, because life goes by, but there are times when for somebody who doesn't have an unlimited wallet it's better to wait a little. I think that will be the case with this product.
