I think Apple is in a better position to switch CPU architectures than back in 2005/2006. (And they wouldn't be switching, but adding.) These days "everyone" is using Xcode, Objective-C (or Swift), Apple's runtimes and frameworks, etc. That makes supporting a new CPU architecture pretty light-weight for developers. I don't even think they'll need a Rosetta-like mode to be able to run non-ARM software on an ARM Mac... we'll all just expect developers to release a version that supports ARM natively and developers pretty much will.

It wouldn't totally surprise me if this device was ARM from day one.

Unless a developer is using assembler or Intel specific intrinsic functions (and very few people would do that), code built for Intel 32 or 64 bit processors will just compile and run on ARM 32 or 64 bit processors without any change.

the rumor of having 3 colors like the iPhone for the Macbook Air is the most ridiculous rumor ever spread

Fanless? Wow. I'm not quite sure, I'd be willing to take a chance on a fanless laptop. Not given Apple's track record with heat management, i.e., hot laptops.

I've always heard problems with their pro lineup, but from all accounts this does not sound like a pro machine.

And personally, I am loving the idea of an ultra thin, fanless consumer machine. Zero noise And vibrations FTW.

Have you owned other brands? Granted some are pretty low on heat, but there are many laptops out there that are so much worse.

Also, they seem to be doing pretty well with the iPad being fanless at least.

Urgh.

The Air is plenty thin enough, it just needs less bezel and a higher resolution.

All it's space would be usefully used in giving it more battery and more graphics grunt to power the higher res screen.

What makes you think that? The silver aluminum design dates as back as 2008, so even though I think it's one of Apple's most beautiful and eternal designs, things change. I guess I for one would love a space grey (or slate) MBA.

You've just described a MacBook Pro... The clue is in the name. Air.

I still think this is the iPad Pro, but the leaks keep mistaking it for a laptop. I can't see a 3rd notebook line, nor do I see the MacBook Air going away....

Oh, I get it now. It's Apple's "response" to MSFT's SURFACE ...

Yes! This is what I'm waiting for. I've been following all the 12" MBA rumors closely and cannot wait to give Apple more money :)
The Air has been my favorite product from Apple and seems to be where they like test out the new CPUs and ports and stuff like SSD's. I had the original 13 with the VERY expensive 64GB SSD and it rocked, then got the first 11" and it was cool, and today run a 2013 11" and am ready to upgrade to a thinner 12". Can't wait!
(I want this way more than a watch ;)

Seriously, fan-less? The fan in my late 2012 MBP is already puny enough.. I have to use smcFanControl just to keep operating temps normal, thanks to the poor airflow design (right below the lid) and poor choice of build material (aluminum). Sure, it's great for heat dissipation, but horrible in your lap.

I cant wait for the reversible usb connector to be standard everywhere. Its hardly a major issue but just makes everything that bit easier.

iPhone 6+ and 12" macbook air I think ;)

Funny because yesterday I was thinking an iPhone 6 with an iPad Air. Then this morning I wanted an iPhone 6+ with NO iPad (but maybe a watch so I don't have to constantly remove a large phone from my pocket).
Now I want just as you said, a 6+ and a 12" air! lol.

This is going to sound silly but I liked when Apple really just had one of everything and it was easy to buy. You had an iPhone an iPad and a MacBook. Done.
I'm not saying choice is bad, but now I need to deal with choosing between different size iPhones, different size iPads, and different tiers of MacBooks. I have no idea which combo works best for me.

With the A8 chip bridging the gap between our modern computer CPU's even closer, I am wondering when Apple will make the shift to the ARM platform. By doing so they won't be bound to Intel's schedule and it'll be possible to implement such things like TouchID even.

If you think A8 is anywhere close to the computer cpu you must be high. A8 is NOWHERE near intel cpus. Not on the same planet, not even in the same galaxy.

This sounds VERY cool. Not sure if I will dump the rMBP though. I do use it for mobile video editing and such, and I don't feel like having to use adapters again for all the ports this thing is gonna be missing. The ports are the reason the current model couldn't get any thinner, so Apple will definitely be looking to replace a few.

The USB rumor makes sense, will be interesting to see if it has Thunderbolt 3 or even a lightning port.
