That notch though...

I know lots of people say 'you get used to it' and it isn't a problem. I believe you. I do. But I really think it just screams 'un-Apple like compromise' every time I see it, and seeing it like that in a landscape app mode seems... even worse to me. I just hope they eliminate it as soon as they can.

Good news about more landscape mode though.

I’m gonna be that guy and say I actually don’t mind the notch and no, I never notice it. Until Apple figures out how to have all that tech under a functioning screen we are stuck with the notch or say goodbye to not just Face ID but all the potential it provides. Currently the only way to ditch the notch is to go back to a huge bezel.

Love it, just as long as they don't try to get me into a subscription for it, complete with money due every month or every year. Seriously. This has been the trend for everything else in the apple store. And I hate it, so I don't buy much any more.

Here we go.. You get to a product in life that makes it almost distinguishable from an iPad screen.. The dreaded words "iPad-like"

It's not long now. Basically meshing the two together almost makes you wonder "Is there really a difference"

I’m looking forward to this model the most. I skipped the X because it was too narrow compared to my 7 Plus. I enjoy using the landscape mode but I wish to hell Apple would have a landscape mode for the music app. It irritates me that they haven’t fixed that.

The notch looks awful in landscape mode.
I'm a Plus owner, I bought the 8+ because I preferred its aspect ratio over iPhone X's one and I thought I'd use my iPhone in landscape more.
Turned out I was wrong, the only time I rotate to landscape is to shot videos or pictures, same things I did with my 6s. Not all apps support landscape mode on the iPhone, even most of the one made by Apple.
And as I said the notch would be really annoying in landscape, so I think I'd be inclined to use it even less frequently on the new X plus.

I guess I'll get back to the "normal" size and get the successor of iPhone X with a 5.8'' display. Not the aspect ratio I love, but I'll gain weight and it will fit better in my pockets. I just hope the Plus won't get a special treatment like in the past when you had to buy a plus to get the second camera. Different specs would be the only reason I'd be interested in the Plus this year, but I don't want to chose between portability and features, I want the 5.8 to have the same specs as the 6.5

Why do people want split screen apps on a phone. Even on the plus models the screen isn't that big.

We're honestly getting to this point...

But the X Plus is smaller than the 8 Plus

Well the iPad is a lot bigger, and can’t make phone calls.

But is the iPhone iPad-like, only smaller, or is the iPad iPhone-like, only bigger?

Sometimes my iPhone X is locked but turned horizontally, when I wake it, the phone shows the time and my notifications in this same horizontal format.
Anyone know why this is and what I'm doing to cause this to happen?
My screen lock is never on and I can't recreate the issue, it just does it randomly.

What I like about iOS is the ability to focus on a single app, though a single task. I couldn't do my job on an iPad and I love the Mac because of windows, but when I use an iOS device I love the fact my app is fullscreen.
Of course it is great to have the ability to run two apps side-by-side on an iPad and some people use an iPad as their daily driver so they really need multitasking.
And on the iPhone, apart from games, I don't know if it is a good idea to use an app in landscape.
Only one of my apps supports landscape on the iPhone (it doesn't work in portrait), and every time I open it for maintenance or add new features I wonder who is happy using it in landscape. Actually I hate doing that and I'd like to make it a portrait only app in the future if I'm able to convince the customer it is the right thing to do.

Rumors have suggested Apple's upcoming 6.5-inch OLED iPhone, which can be thought of as an "iPhone X Plus" device, will feature a screen resolution of 2688 x 1242 with somewhere around 450 pixels per inch. Comparatively, the current 5.8-inch iPhone X features a screen resolution of 2436 x 1125, and the second-generation device is expected to use the same display.

As with Apple's plus-sized iPhones, the extra screen real estate of the larger 6.5-inch device will enable an iPad-style landscape mode that offers up more available information in apps like Mail, Contacts, Calendar, and Stocks when viewed in landscape orientation.

This has been confirmed in data gathered by Brazilian site iHelpBR from the most recent beta versions of iOS 12 and Xcode. The site forced the iOS Simulator tool to run at a resolution of 2688 x 1242 with a PPI of 458 and found that many native apps have been adapted with landscape mode features appropriate for a larger device.

In screenshots, the Contacts and Calendar apps, for example, both feature iPad-style layouts that are currently used in plus-sized devices like the iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone 8 Plus.

This suggests that Apple plans to treat the "iPhone X Plus" as it does the other larger-screened Plus devices, taking full advantage of the extra display area, and it also confirms that the upcoming device is likely to use the rumored 2688 x 1242 resolution.

Apple first introduced the new landscape mode features in iOS 8 alongside the release of the iPhone 6 Plus, the first larger-screened Plus sized device that Apple launched. Since then, the feature has been limited to the larger iPhone models.

Though the iPhone X's 5.8-inch display is bigger diagonally than the 5.5-inch display of the iPhone 8 Plus and prior plus-sized iPhones, it did not adopt the iPad-like landscape mode features.

Not sure why Landscape is not an option on all models? Maybe its a resolution thing? I have an iPhone X and 8+. I love the landsca
This is already a thing on the 6/6s/7/8 plus. I always wondered why it wasn't a thing on the X. I guess this is the answer. They wanted to keep it exclusive to the plus model.

I asked myself the same question until i went to show my girl a bike i was interested in. I have an iPhone X and brought up the bike. I held it in portrait mode and the bike was a bit small so i tilted the phone to landscape mode and i could not fit the bike into the frame. I had to scroll down or up but still could not fit the entire bike onto the X screen. A simple resolution? Not sure but i ended up showing my girl the portrait photo as you could see the entire bike albeit small.

I don’t think they have actually. I think it only just came to the S9 plus this year.

Not to exclaim Android had it first as a defiance against Apple but Sony had the Xperia Z Ultra which had the "Plus" mentality behind it with a landscape feature. Back when jailbreaking was easy I loved having the ability on my 4/4S/5 to have parity with my Android devices which were very easily modified to run a landscape layout. It would be really great just to see this come across the board. 85% of the time my phones are used in landscape so it would be a welcome change to not have to crank my head all the time between apps

I use split screen all the time on my iPad, usually having YouTube on a quarter of the screen and whatever else I'm doing on the other three quarters. I just can't imagine splitting the iPhone screen into two tiny screens would provide any kind of useful user experience.

I don't think you can run two apps side by side on a Plus and have a great user experience.
Landscape version of apps like Mail, Calendar or iMessage are useful to some people so it is ok to maintain them but as I stated I don't find myself using the phone in landscape so often.
With iPhone X aspect ratio landscape is even worse, you miss vertical space and many apps do use the native toolbar on top, so you have that space wasted and there isn't much room for content.
The best aspect ratio for landscape usage is iPhone 8+ 5.5'' and that was one of the reason why I went for the Plus instead of iPhone X, only to find out I don't need landscape mode but I do need a smaller phone in my pocket.

Now that you mention it, I don't think I've ever used my phone in landscape mode for any app unless it's the only orientation it works in. I think it's because if I use the phone in landscape it requires two hands, in portrait, it can used with just one.

After using the Plus size phone for two generations I moved to the X and find that size really great (more practical).
However, if the X Plus has a smaller form factor than the current Plus models, I would consider it, otherwise the current X size is perfect.
The only other reason I would consider the larger size phone would be if the camera was significantly better.

New phone or not, Apple NEEDS to make the music app landscape. It's a PITA switching from Waze landscape to music to change a song, or interact in some way.

Setting the iOS Simulator to run with a custom resolution doesn't say anything about Apple's future smartphone plans/designs. lol

Nobody wants to rotate their iPhone to landscape to use stock apps. I doubt many people do. I have a plus phone and I've completely forgotten about landscape use. But it's a nice software feature to have I guess.
I agree. When I still had my old Plus iPhone I barely ever used the landscape view in apps and it would actually frustrate me whenever it rotated unintentionally.

I've never seen the lock screen on an iPhone X in landscape orientation. The only roughly equivalent time is if you swipe down from the top while in an app in landscape.
