Whoopity doo dah, another lousy, overpriced streaming service that has little to offer.

I'm scratching my head as to how you can pronounce an unreleased service 'lousy' and 'overpriced' when virtually the only detail that's been announced is that it will be offered free to anyone with an Apple device.

To date the only streaming service to have a decent offering is AT&T with DirecTV Now, and you have to pay $65 per month to get the cable TV channel lineup. Too much for too little. I wish someone would just offer all the major cable channels at a decent price but without all the sports and premium channels. HBO and the other premium channels have never been worth their cost to me, and I couldn't care less about sports anymore. No other service has all the major channels/channel groups, they all omit at least some, which kills the deal for me. Until then, I'm sticking with cable.

Yeah, it's almost like those channels all charge the providers a fee to sell their programming to subscribers.

As of yet I haven't seen one Apple original TV show that looks like it is even remotely interesting.

How many Apple original shows would you say you've seen?

But then again, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon have very few original good shows either.

I'm sorry, that's just delusional.

Amazon's Prime Video wants to charge extra for nearly every movie I want to watch, so it is difficult to feel warm and fuzzy about their crappy service. Netflix says I have to pay extra to rent the DVD for most of the movies I want to see as they rarely stream the ones I like. Hulu is more for old TV series rather than decent new stuff. None of these companies seem to have clue...

If you honestly can't find any programming you like on Netflix/Amazon/Hulu, I agree that you should probably just give up.

BTW, some of us still want to watch TV on a TV, not a stupid tiny screen.

How do you think the rest of us are watching all of this programming, on our phones?

Bottom line:

There are apps for Amazon Prime, Hulu, Netflix, CBS All Access, Disney, CNN, ESPN, HBO, etc. Content owners are making finding something to watch on your Apple devices very complicated. You have to check multiple apps that may or may not have a great user interface. It just doesn't work. So Apple is reacting. Trying to bring back balance to your TV. With their TV App.

One App to rule them all. One App to find them. One App to bring them all and on your Apple device bind them.

And even if you don't have any subscriptions, there will be free content to make you happy that you paid that extra money for an Apple device.
So Netflix is Frodo?

I think this is great news, frankly, for owners of Apple devices. Who doesn't like free content if it's high quality?! And look at the level of talent attached to these new series in the works from Apple: Jennifer Anniston, Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carrell, Steven Spielberg, M. Knight Shyamalan, Oprah Winfrey, Chris Evans, Octavia Spencer, J.J. Abrams, Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, Kevin Durant, Sesame Workshop, etc. No, every series under development at Apple doesn't interest me but a lot of them do. Frankly, I think it's quite possible that I'll be enjoying as many original series from Apple in 2019-20 as I currently do on either Showtime, HBO, or Hulu.

However, as others have stated, I do think it's possible that a couple years down the road, once Apple has built up a decent number of hours of original content, that they'll begin charging for the service and expand it beyond just Apple devices.

At any rate, it will be nice in the meantime to have some new free content (hopefully in 4K Dolby Vision) inside the TV app on my Apple TV. Oh, and hopefully Netflix wises up and allows their stuff to be discovered and queued inside the TV app alongside everyone else's content.

Not sure why the need for a global rollout. If Apple can overcome rights issues to launch Apple Music day one in 100 countries and push out their own content simultaneously (such as Carpool Karaoke) there really isn’t any reason to delay first party content

Apple probably is just trying to be cautious. Netflix and Amazon didn't roll out globally on day one either. It makes sense to test the waters and fine tune things before taking the show on the road. There's still a lot we don't know here - are those rumors of a free service for Apple gizmo owners true? How can they afford to make a Foundation adaptation etc on that basis?

i remember Steve rolling out the Apple TV back in the day and saying it was just a hobby. Apple has the time and money to do anything they want when they want. If I ran Netflix I wouldn't welcome this news.

This is not meant to be snarky at all. I'm genuinely curious how this is going to work. I'm not exaggerating when I say everyone I know owns an Apple device. If the rumor is true that Apple's original content will be free for Apple device owners, then where does the money come from to keep producing content and further develop this streaming service?
Good question. I expect that if this rumor is true at all, the part about the service being free for owners of Apple devices will be temporary, designed to get market share.

When this new streaming service was discussed before, it was described as a Disney-esque offering, with no nudity, etc.

Are we going to discuss the irony of a scene from Westworld - a show that will never make its way to the Apple streaming service due to the nudity and violence - being displayed at the top of this article? No? Well okay then.

I think you can buy Westworld in iTunes.

Did you read this part? People won't need to take on another subscription, they'll just need to own an Apple device.

Indeed, I missed the word "free" there when I read it. Let's see if that is true and if so, how long for. Apple after all is so well known for giving away services for free ...

They could break into this very quickly if they have a bidding war and win rights to Game of Thrones next season.
Please you think HBO giving Apple the rights to GoT? Maybe in three years when its in full re runs....

When it suits their purposes and long-range plans, yes, they do give away a lot for free. They shocked a lot of people at the time when they decided to give away Mac OS X. Same with their productivity suite (Keynote, Pages, Numbers) and media applications (Garage Band, iMovie, Beats One Radio).

I remember when Steve Jobs himself was trying to negotiate deals for content for Apple TV.

If it's better than Netflix I'd move. But Netflix is exceptional.

It will go the usual route, it'll be great at launch, then stagnate for 3-5 years, followed by a statement on how they havn't abandoned the thing. Then a half-arsed update.

"In 100+ countries"... With the rate that Apple is rolling out other features to countries outside the US, we in The Netherlands can expect this by the time the sun has expanded so far that it will consume Earth..

Still waiting for Apple Pay, TV Series, News etc etc....
[doublepost=1540326832][/doublepost]

Their business models are completely different...

Can’t even buy an stainless steel or overpriced Hermes Apple Watch here in Amsterdam (though LTE support is mainly due to Dutch carriers colluding to protect themselves from churn).

Wanted to needlessly give Apple extra money for my wife’s bday present, but since they refuse to offer the Hermes version will take her on a trip

I keep saying this every time I see an article about their planned Netflix-like service - make deals to stream all movies and tv shows on iTunes for a few £/$/€ etc a month!

I hope they’ve looked into this and hope they’ve tried it as well.

Those are all in house and developed by Apple.
Not clear how that would translate when you have to pay actors/actresses, producers etc. who don’t work directly for Apple.

I doubt it, because there's nothing ironic about that.

How is this going to work with the new EU law on audiovisual media?

And yeah... can't imagine my country will fall in the 100... sigh

Well things did progress within the EU. I'm a expat and I could never access media from my own county (without VPN). But since this year it got much better (thank you EU!) Maybe this is what Apple was waiting for. If the 99 other countries follow within weeks or months, well good!

But I'm afraid we are mislead once again. It will take probably another few years. Since iPhone 5 Apple Pay, today jack ****. And the list is long (very long) of service not provided in many countries. I also hope we can get rid of that stupid content block for Netflix, Amazon, etc. ]

It's simply geo-content-discrimination. Those who want to pay can't, so yeah that can lead only to one thing....
