Webkit sucks, everyone knows this and that's why Apple keeps it locked down on iOS devices.

What's the last innovative feature Safari has made? They put out Safari technology previews all the time which means nothing to the average consumer.

Apple keeps it locked down on their devices because they think it’s a better security posture to have one browser engine when 98% of people don’t even know what a browser engine is, let alone have a preference on which one is used, and trust themselves more than third parties.

That’s it. That’s the reason. It’s not because they’re being anticompetitive. It’s because no one cares outside of a handful of tech nerds, which we can see by the fact that in the regions that allow third party engines, no one has built one.

You know what would really suck? If Google not only gets an effective monopoly over web engines, but also, web developers handed it to them perfectly willingly because they're idiots who can't see the bigger picture.

The Apple-Google-Mozilla tripoly is non-ideal, but it's what we've got. Be careful what you wish for.

But they can do that with WebKit.

They already have Edge on iOS; the question is why a company that explicitly gave up on developing their engine would put that kind of effort in.

As many did. Still, I’d like a WebKit alternative browser with more useful features. Brave is doing good work, but they can only do so much with all the iOS restrictions. And i hate that **** elitist.


Personally, I use LibreWolf on macOS, but I’m very limited on iOS. If Apple truly cared about security and privacy, this would be the logical move. They would also kill ads in every single app and limit all kinds of exposure to fingerprinting. But they don’t—at least not to the extent they keep preaching.
