I've always been a generally healthy individual but honestly, since I got my first watch in 2015; I've really maintained a much healthier lifestyle. Not because Apple is forcing me with motivation alerts (turned those off), but because it just made me more self aware. It gets personal real quick when the rings aren't closed.

The one thing I hate about it is the streaks. I want to have the ability to use other dressier watches, but not lose my streak because I don’t wear the thing one day. Even if it was just for the move goal - my iPhone already tracks steps, so let them get injected into the activity app when there is no data from the watch...

This watch has inspired me to get out there, and keep working. I'm pretty consistent, 6-7 days a week. Just did 10 days in a row. However, I am really pissed off at this. No one, and I mean no one, should work out every single day. The interface is simplistic. Just do everything all the time. I'm 65 and it's not good for me to not put a rest day in there once in a while- like once a week. Even elite athletes do that... at some interval. There should not be this emphasis on working out every single day - it ought to be 6 days, or something more complex, like rest days, easy days and harder days. What is wrong with these people that design this? Just like most everything else on the phone, they need to realize that we are not all 12 years old. And we are a community that can afford their products...

I don’t know what the appeal would be, but it seems observant Jews and Muslims who don’t exercise on their sabbaths would benefit from the option to tell it that you have an off day and adjust accordingly. Some Christians also observe Sabbath but typically not as strictly as other groups.

Anyway- I like closing the rings. Always a little disappointed when I miss.

Going on 90 consecutive days with every ring closed, it’s become a big motivator to get active.

I used to spend way too much time sitting down for hours on end. These days, I’ve given up on most tv watching and endless internet browsing and I go on a 10k walk every single day. No excuses.

It’s pretty fascinating how such a small thing can make such a big difference in a person’s life.
I agreed, it's a funny thing. For me is swimming, I have been 108 days closing the rings. I never expected this would be a motivator but here it is. I miss my Omega Seamaster but my shape and health is so much better now due the Apple Watch. The data gathering is very interesting to see where and how you can improve your workouts. Great job Apple!

difference between move and exercise?

I have found move will increase with even a slow walk. Exercise requires at least a "brisk" walk. Biking will move my exercise rings, as do calisthenics, but a leisurely walk; while it will increase the move ring, does not effect the exercise ring.

I've been walking every day since December 4th. The benefits have made this so worth getting out every day. It's not just closing the rings. It's the feeling great every day and the amount of energy I have even after walking 10 miles at one time is just never ending. Then there's the physical benefits such as the toning and looking better then I did a year ago. I've also lost about 6 pounds since December 4th even though I'm not overweight.

The ring goals are a joke. If your goal is 50 or 100 kals then or course you’re going to close those rings with easy. It should be a min. of 800-1000 before any real credit is given

That would discourage a lot of people though. My move goal is set to 420 although I've been averaging 1250 now daily. I keep it at 420 because it takes a 5 mile walk to reach that goal and I use that to force myself to walk at least enough to meet that goal at one time. This morning, I walked 6 miles which got me up to 600 and I still have to go to work tonight so I will easily get up to 1200 again and about 22,000 steps.

every thought it's better than no exercise/movement? don't forget every human doesn't have them threshold to constantly exercise due to age or physical body impairment. You can always change the "cal" goal as you please go. You should crank your goal ring to 5000 cal and tell us how you did it.

think before you speak buddy.

Closing the rings was a bit of fun till my watch and iPhone started losing each other. This kind of kills the streaks. Never understood why the data could not have been recorded / maintained by either and synced.

On a parallel note, since switching to a Razer and a Gear Sport, I haven't had that issue. No rings either.

It helped me in the beginning but now after 3 years with my Apple Watch i always forget about it and the reminder has gotten annoying more than anything haha

It doesn’t really take much to close the rings. Getting to work and back + a tea every hour in the kitchen and i usually close them all

I've foudn the reminder for Move and the other activities annoying because after I tilt my watch to acknowledge the reminder it's there in a pause state just showing me the logo. I want to immediatley swipe it away sometimes, or when I tap on the watch screen for the reminder it doesn't present it to be accessible not withough a few seconds delay which is excrutiating.

Breathing excercises and just general mindfulness are so important to your health that I think it should be included in the daily rings. A green Breath circle in the middle of the rings should be added.

BOOM!

This right here. I've a very stressful job, mentally stressful with barely any gratification. Yet breathing had help me a LOT! The reminder of these is only showing up 1x per day and missing several days the past few updates. It's broken.

Two family members got AW's within the past few months (Christmas and shortly after) it has renewed my attentiveness to the status of my own rings. I have to work out before work, early in the morning. The thought of them closing their rings and me not helps me get out of bed.

I'm not sure if you mean some sort of disease, ailment or if you're referring to the Apple Watch? It could read like both. Hope everything is ok.

I would like to challenge that statement for a number of reasons , first as was said in the song Everybody's Free to wear sunscreen by Baz Luhrmann that: "the race is long and in the end it's only with yourself"

Secondly if you are suggesting that 800 to 1000 kilocalories a day of exercise is healthy then I would really like you to show me the research on PubMed that backs that up.
A comprehensive study in Denmark showed that excessive exercise, through running for example, increased mortality to a level that was almost equal to no exercise.

Although I don't have an Apple watch, I'm glad that it helps some people achieve the motivation to exercise more, however it's important to not become slavish to the device but rather to listen to your body and figure out what is right in terms of exercise. Especially for normal weight people that are otherwise in reasonable health and not training to become elite athletes I fail to see the point in spending hours every day exercising only to fill that up with having to eat more food.

I second that. I'm an avid fan of using the Apple Watch to track workout activity, and I follow a varied workout routine each week. I usually alternate between hiit cardio, strength training, and yoga/Pilates workouts during the week, followed by a rest day. I lower my activity monitor on the watch during my rest day, but it would be nice if I the Apple watch workouts can be customized to follow different workout routines rather without having to manually adjust the activity monitor for lower intensity and/or rest days.

Well done, I'm glad that you're in great shape by the sound of it and I completely agree . But apparently we now live in a society where everything has to be reduced to a simple number and gamified instead of trying to listen to our bodies...

(And before anyone complains, I design satellite systems for a living , so I can hardly be described as a Luddite)

Apple is all about rings these days
The ring to lock them down to where they are. And yes, the ring is closing.

Well, there is another solution:
Don’t care about the ring at all and live normally. Forget about achievements and all of those shenanigans.

I totally agree! Given the fact that it's nice to have that "push" that it sends you if you're slacking off a little bit or gives you a "hooray" for being ahead of the rings during a certain time of day on average. It knows if you are being lazy and being very active in pushing yourself further. It has been a big help for me since I work 12-16 hours in front of a computer all day. Whenever I get that 50th minute reminder, I get up and walk outside for 2-5 mins. just to get the blood flowing and the hear rate up. I feel a lot better at the end of the day compared to before I didn't have AW3.

Move is just any movement. Exercise has to be much more intense movement or with the exercise tracking on.
I agree. That's why they separated the intense workout goals on a separate complication. I use a few of those as well as closing the Rings. Movement doesn't necessarily mean you have to exercise. A quick 5 minute walk or taking the stairs instead of the elevator will help you close your Move rings.
