Apple's 'Wonderlust' Event: New Products to Expect Beyond the iPhone 15

It's been quite a while since I bought a phone on launch day (think the last one was the 6). Do pre orders usually start on the day of the event?

Apple is expected to hold its annual fall event this year on Tuesday, September 12, when it will announce its new flagship iPhone 15 lineup, but there are a few more products expected to be unveiled as well.

Keep reading to learn everything we know about what else Apple is expected to announce at the event beyond the iPhone 15.

Apple Watch Series 9

This year, Apple is expected to release the Apple Watch Series 9, an iterative update on the current Series 8. The refresh is expected to focus on updating the cores within the device's S-series chip, delivering a notable performance improvement, but the rest of the device is likely to be effectively the same as the Apple Watch Series 8.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the S9 chip will be based on the A15 Bionic chip used in the iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and other devices. The new chip could bring significantly improved performance and efficiency, boosting app launch speeds and potentially improving battery life. Apple reportedly plans to introduce a new pink color option for the ‌Apple Watch Series 9‌.

Apple Watch Ultra 2

The Apple Watch Ultra is Apple's top-of-the-line Apple Watch, priced at $800. At 49mm, it is also the largest, designed for outdoor enthusiasts who need more durability and a wider range of niche features than those who wear the standard Apple Watch.

A refreshed version of the Apple Watch Ultra will come out this fall, and it is expected to get the same S9 processor upgrade that is coming to the Apple Watch Series 9, along with new 3D printed components.

The second-generation version of the Apple Watch Ultra could potentially be lighter than the first-generation model. A rumor from Weibo user Setsuna Digital claims that the new Apple Watch Ultra will have a reduced weight, which could be due to the 3D printed parts Apple is rumored to be using.

The second-generation Apple Watch Ultra could also potentially come in a new darker color option, such as a black titanium shade.

New iPhone Cases and Apple Watch Bands

As is typical of September Apple events, it's likely that new iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands will be released in a variety of fresh colors. The new cases and bands sometimes become available to order on Apple's online store just minutes after the event ends.

According to one rumor, Apple is planning to release a new band for the Apple Watch Series 9 that will be made out of a woven fabric material and feature a magnetic buckle, similar to the existing Modern Buckle band.

Meanwhile, several sources have claimed that Apple will not offer leather iPhone 15 cases this year, as it has done for annual iPhone releases since 2013. Instead, it has been suggested the company will offer leather-like cases that use more eco-friendly materials.

USB-C AirPods Pro Case

Apple is likely to release a USB-C charging case for AirPods Pro alongside the launch of the iPhone 15, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

The shift is in line with the same switch from Lightning to USB-C that is expected to happen across the iPhone 15 series this year.

How about the iPad mini 7? I use my 6 on an almost daily basis and it seems overdue for a refresh

I’d love a larger capacity MagSafe battery with usb-c. I wonder if the addition of usb-c would mean that you could plug a cable into that port and charge another device that way? It would be handy to top off my watch that way when needed.

I'm guessing that 99% of iPhone users have never plugged their phone into a computer, and Apple knows it. Why pay for the higher priced chips if it's a niche userbase that actually uses wired data transfer?

This is just like all the people that thought Apple was stupid for not offering a mini iPhone, only to find it barely sold. Or those that said a 15" Air would sell "like hotcakes", only to hear that sales are very underwhelming.

OMG, did you just inject logic and context into this? What's next, rational discourse?!?!

Seriously. When apple started upsizing phones people threw fit's and said nothing over a 4.5 would sell. The vocal minority. Before iCloud wired backup to iTunes was the way, not any more.

I am personally most excited for an SE refresh and whether or not it has a notch or dynamic island. My guess is a notch and stick with what essentially is a rebranded iPhone 13 mini for 2 generations (4-5 years).

It has to be a notch (for FaceID) or a home button. Or they could put the fingerprint thingie on the sleep button like they do on some iPads.

So they sell expensive USB-C cables, but non-pro iPhones only get USB 2.0, which came when many forum members were not even born yet. That was seven years before the iPhone without a number was released. USB 2.0 is so slow, that on notebook you only use it for a cabled mousse or maybe a USB powered fan.
Yes, but Apple will make an extra 0.01c extra profit from each iPhone 15 due to using that cheaper port and cable, so it is worth it for the shareholders and for the CEO's bonus. I wish this was a joke. See my signature for further info.

I predict Apple will milk the dual camera system on the standard iPhone models for yet another year while the competition offer triple and quadruple systems for the same price and cheaper. The Pro models will continue with a triple system to justify that differentiation and prices for all will go up again like last year.

It would be nice to be wrong for a change this year with my expectations.

I bought the Ultra in July and returned it 2 weeks later after being suitably impressed with most of it!
After realizing a 2nd gen model was going to probably appear two weeks before my birthday in September 2023. I decided to wait and watch!
I will most certainly buy the new Ultra as my series 4 is a bit old but still works fine! I was super impressed with the face size and all else except for the weight. I’ve been a scuba diver for over 40 years and I was really disappointed to see the dive computer app on a rental basis, something I will never do. Hey, you want your dive app to be around all the time so you are extremely familiar with it once you are in the drink! Bad Idea, dive app rentals!
People seem to say the processor upgrade is not too exciting but for me thats a big deal. Maybe because I’ve supported Apple since 1980! In the early days, new processors followed my ram/disk size were the biggest deal!

The new processor is going to enable a lot of new functionality over the next couple of years. I suspect by next year the Ultra (and Series X) will be offering a lot more in the way of recovery metrics and training prescription.

This is interesting!

It looks like the last Apple Internal recap event will be held on September 21st. This suggests that the new products that Apple will present on September 12th will be available on September 22nd.
