What evidence make the writer think Apple TV is also now a priority for Apple?

-Sure, I would love it to be a "priority" but I haven't seen anything to suggest it is taking priority over iOS, other then it no longer being a hobby project.

However, OS X characteristics like the Finder, multi-window multitasking, and Mission Control will not disappear in favor of a more iOS-like experience.

The fact that this even needs to be said terrifies me.

Apple should be employing more resources to get everything thing done quicker and right, instead of waiting for the competition to catch up.

This sounds like 10.10 could look really great or really terrible. We'll have to see.

Why can't Apple get more developers? I'd imagine they attract the top talent.

And who's going to write all the cool software for iOS if developers start drifting away from the Mac?

LMAO. Where are they going to go? Android? You really think that the best iOS developers are going to jump ship because the latest OS X release didn't exactly have all the bells and whistles at launch that Apple wants?

Bad move IMO if iOS 8 isn't near completion. What is more important to the bottom line and mind share, iOS or OS X?

they're putting iOS coders on the OS X team.. i don't think they're putting hardware engineers on a software team.

(as in-- iOS was needed for the 5s.. the phone itself will be the focus this year)

note*- guessing,speculating,etc.. i don't really know this stuff but i hope that's obvious.. declaimer_ing just in cast.

.... If they could make it a bit smaller I'd buy one for my bedroom, one for my living room, and another for when I travel...

Hmm this is interesting. I have never thought about taking my Apple TV when I travel. If I'm on vacation do I really want to sit and watch TV? Not really, unless it is raining outside. It might be nice to stream some music from the hotel/condo TV but then I do travel with a speaker I can dock my iPhone to play music.

I guess if you have kids and have purchased a lot of movies/content from iTunes then it would make sense to bring the Apple TV to the hotel/condo to play the movies for the kids.

Looks like I am no longer looking forward to WWDC. I haven't touched my Mac Mini in over a year. That's still got 10.7 on it.

So Apple is behind on iOS 8 but they are just going to release it anyway and put most of the new features in 8.1?!!! Wow... Apple is starting to slip. I'd rather wait 6 extra months for them to put out sturdy builds and not just shovel us crap.

Bring back iOS 6!

From 9to5Mac's report:
While some iOS 8 features may not launch until later in 2014 or early 2015, it is likely that Apple could preview all of the planned iOS 8 functionality at WWDC much like it announced CarPlay approximately a year before the feature’s release.
Perhaps Apple learned their lesson with iOS 7 and won't release anything that isn't ready for prime time. Perhaps the OS X changes are, and they just need a little help to get over the finish line. If any of this report is true it proves that the new campus can't come soon enough. It's hard to believe that Google has more employees than Apple corporate does.

A couple of thoughts:

iOS 7 was a huge departure from the preceding versions. iOS 8 won't be anything close to as radical a change. So the required resources will be much less.

How much of this 'shifting resources' comes down to a shifting of management focus? One large software project at a time?

Apple is not a small company as is. They have tens of thousands of engineers. They probably do have the "top" talent. If they expand they probably would be fishing amongst the B, C and even D players.

I hope the redesign doesn't make OSX as buggy as ios7 was when it got released. Many people use macs for real, productivity-related work, and it would be a disaster if apps broke and you got random reboots ever so often.

I'd like to see it at least on the priority list. Not necessarily higher than iOS, just on the list.

What I'd like is an App Store. There are so many apps on the Apple TV that I don't use, it's annoying me.

I'd also like it to gain game console features. Add in an SSD, release a game controller app for iPhones & iPads, etc. However, I have seen some games for iPhone where you you download the game on your phone and it pushes a second display to the AppleTV. It lagged quite a bit, though.

And where exactly do they put these resources? It's not like they have bunch of empty cubicles inside of Apple HQ.

It's nice for OS X to get some attention but I'd rather have the many bugs in Mavericks fixed before OS X gets a cosmetic overhaul.

Totally agree, I still have lots of hang ups and beachballs with everyday use of Mavericks - finish the current OS before making a new one!

Looking forward to the OS X redesign, nice that it'll get centre stage after being out of the spotlight for iOS for many years ;)

With the launch of universal applications in the Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 platform I wouldn't be surprised if Apple is going all out to harmonise the platforms to ensure that everything below the interface can be shared between the platforms. There is also the other situation Apple is facing - iOS device is slowing overall and they need to be more than just a 'one trick pony' - and that'll require Apple getting their act together and start taking their PC business serious. Given the dearth of quality laptops and desktops out there combined with the schizophrenic Windows roadmap the market is calling, sorry, screaming for a hero to provide and alternative to that exists in the mainstream.

Kind of unusual for Apple to introduce new features outside of a .0 release, isn't it? Makes me wonder about the validity of the claim that some features may not debut until iOS 8.1.

But yes, it is time that Apple bring OS X up to UI speed, so this is not a suprise of focus. Frankly though, I enjoy the current Mavericks implementation just fine.

One thing that I haven't heard about is when or whether or not Apple will provide browser-based access to Apple Maps, rather than require one to use their Mac or iDevice. Whenever I email a pin from Apple Maps to somebody on Android or Windows, Google Maps pop up. That in itself is good, because they may not have access to Apple Maps at all (at least for right now); but it looks sloppy to me since I'd like to see Apple's Maps open in my browser rather than Google's Maps.

And I do hope Apple does something for AppleTV; I had received an AppleTV for Christmas, and returned it thinking that a new AppleTV would be out earlier in this year. I'm still waiting, over-patiently.

I am figuratively laughing out loud at each sentence of your post.

Um, you do realize that they will probably wait until 8.1 so that they make sure the features are sturdy? 8.0 will probably be mostly performance improvements, which should make everyone happy.

And ps, iOS 6 is dead, iOS 7 isn't changing, and you have to live with it

Apple seems to operate with an eye towards diminishing returns. If you employ the 100 best people for some specialty, then the next 100 aren't going to be as good. In other words, throwing more money at a project doesn't always get it done quick or better. Let alone both at the same time.

I don't know the internal organization of Apple so I have to speculate here. I suspect iOS & Mac OS X shares quite a bit of the same codebase, and it would help to have people work on both teams. That way, there's consistency and things work better together instead of two people who don't know what the other's doing.
