Call Larry Parker and hit them with a Class Action -

I think this is a case of hearing some big word and not quite understanding it.

For a Class Action, you need others who had the same problem. I would think that being a phone locked to a canadian carrier is not something that happens to many people in the USA.

So you feel the need to be paid for being polite - shouldn't people be polite in the first place.

What's with this entitlement mentality people have now. Apple solved the problem, you have a new phone, why are you trying to get something? So what if you had to spend 9 hours over a course of a week to resolve something - that's life.

wow really? How about the major screw up that apple did which caused him to lose a day of time? Thats okay for apple to do because they were nice to him? Sorry but thats not right and its people like you that cause companies to roll over and not give a crap anymore about product they are producing.

if this was a samsung situation you wouldn't even get a case...consider your self lucky you are given some options of compensation at all :)

I think all the responses that are not in your favor...you kind of asked for it...because really this thought of "compensation" is a bit over rated....take what you get and enjoy it because at the end of the day what your getting is "Satisfaction, Premium Quality and great service"

Hi all!

Really, really long story short: Last night my phone gave me a SIM error. Turns out when I flipped with a white box/refurb a few months ago, Apple accidentally gave me a Canadian carrier-locked phone, even though I'm in the US on AT&T. I hit two Apple stores, an AT&T store, and was exclusively devoted to this from 9am -6pm tonight.

Eventually, they had to go up up up into support, and supposedly my phone will begin working in 24 hours - but they're not sure. And after an entire day without a phone and all those issues, and a week ahead of me busy at work, I ended up just buying a brand new iPhone, unsubsidized, for about $800 with the agreement I'll just return it when they get my old phone working.

Thoughts?

Yeah, I've never been to an Apple Store outside the US. They admitted it was a pretty massive screw-up.

Something is really 'off' with this story.

In a US Apple store they gave you a refurb white iPhone for your 1st phone...and it took you 3 months to figure it was locked to a Canadian carrier? You never used the phone? Normally, they check out the refurb right there...register with ATT or pop your old sim in.

I bet the refurb exchange took all of 10 minutes (my experience with a malfunctioning iPhone exchange). Why spend hours on fixing the 2nd phone in the store? They should just give you another refurb phone on the spot? That is Apple's normal response to 'fixing' a phone in the store.

Even if they had no unlocked phones in the store, OR had to unlock you current iPhone, that takes little time to unlock...but you have to hook up to iTunes to finalize the unlock.

From what you write, this story is a bit unbelievable. If it took you three months to figure you had a non-working phone...that's your fault...no compensation, IMO. Kind of hard to swallow a complaint of a day lost and a busy week ahead, when you had the phone for a 'few months' without using it.

What compensation do I get for reading this thread? :D

No, I'm asking to be compensated because they wasted my time. 9 hours - pretty much my entire Sunday - is a lot of time to sit in an Apple store and twiddle your thumbs; especially when a solution wasn't even found ;p And for what it's worth - I was offered something - I didn't ask.

Just take what they offered you I would say. They are not obliged to give you anything for your time and the fact they did, shows they appreciate they wasted your valuable time. If the experience has left a bitter taste in your mouth, consider trying another manufacturer and hope their customer service is better. I've always been very impressed with Apple's customer service and have been in the situation where I've had to wait a couple of hours for my fault to be sorted. I've sat in traffic jams with roadworks and not expected compensation. I hate the way the modern world thinks these days and expects everyone else to foot the bill. Sometimes we just have to take it as experience and appreciate things take time. Take the money they offered you and run. Becoming greedy could end up getting you nothing if they retract the original offer. ;)

I wouldn't presume they'll allow you to pick something as compensation. It seems to me that's not how Apple works. You'll likely get a "sorry about that" and then told to move on.

Do not take this wrong but you seem to be a typical "entitled" person who feel the world owes you something.

In the end Apple made it right.

I was extremely polite, and constantly told them I knew it wasn't their fault - that **** happens. But, at the core, this was 100% *Apple's* fault; and they wasted an entire day of my time, and I had to put a $800+ "hold" on my account in light of their inability to solve the issue.

The manager asked me if I needed a case or Applecare around 2, and I declined. I said that if it was solved today, I would seek nothing. However, that if it didn't get solved, I would hope for some level of compensation. Well, it didn't get solved today. I have the manager's card, and he told me to call him once everything was figured out to "make it right."

Assuming it *is* solved tomorrow - and I'm not confident - what do you feel is appropriate compensation?

I don't want to be that guy... you know? **** does happen. But on the flip side - between two 70+ hour work weeks and lots of travel - my Sunday and my sanity are valuable.

I was thinking of trying out that new Fitbit One or whatever - seems intriguing but not worth $130. Does that seem like an appropriate request? Is that too greedy? Or not fair for me? To be honest - a case or some $30 junket doesn't really make me feel any better. Honestly, a day of work pays me more than that Jawbone costs - so I honestly feel like a new Airport Extreme is more appropriate; but then I tell myself that's too pricey and to be thankful for anything.

im sorry ur post just sounds so odd.
it starts off righteously bemoaning apples service and rightly so. then abruptly ur tone shifts to: oo im wondering what i should get now? maybe this product? what do u think i can get away with getting as a freebie?

im sure that if u press them they will give u compensation maybe a gift card, but u cant just say: i want compensation! give me i dunno, that jawbone, i quite like that!

i actually had the same problem as u. basically, i live in hong kong but go to school in uk. they swapped my phone with a white box 1 day before, and they unlocking process didnt complete before i went to uk, therefore i was stuck with a non working phone for 1 and a half months, went back, they unlocked it within 30 mins aftter lots of fiddling on their computer. did i get compensation? no. did i expect it? no.

Wow. No one can read? The manager offered compensation, OP didn't ask. And they made it right? Not really. OP spent $600 out of pocket and still has to go back to the store after 9 hours there.

I heard the macbook line of laptops are really nice. Maybe you can grab one, hell might as well get a couple.

Just read this, but can't believe you'd think it's great that he got a 'new phone'?! That's like me buying a car, and I should be grateful that I got a 'new car'.

He paid for it when it was Apple's mistake. He had to give Apple an extra $800 just to have a working phone.

And those 9 hours could have been spent doing something better, like spending time with his family. Just because these things happen doesn't make it right.

I'm with you bro.

Doesn't matter if Apple is freely offering some sort of compensation. It will still cost Apple money even if they do have a ton of it. ;)

Also he could have left and spent the time with family…….or gone to work. Apple didn't force him to be there.

……How many time has your car be in the shop longer than planed, ever get GM to compensate you for your lost time? You'll need a lawyer and a lot more extra time.

It was a Sunday, which may mean he was unable to go to work. Also, what if he needed his phone for work? You're hardly just going to leave your phone broken, are you?

We're lucky to have insurance that provides a courtesy car, so that hasn't been an issue yet ;)

If I need to work, YES!
Doesn't mater what day it was/is…..

…key word Courtesy……not 'Compensation' Car.

What if his place of work is shut on Sunday? It obviously does matter what day it is. Your hardly going to just get a new job because your phone is broken? I fail to see your logic here?

Yes, it was a courtesy car. But I don't see Apple giving him a courtesy phone. In any event, it makes things a lot easier even if it technically may not be 'compensation'.

You can 'What if' this to death and won't change a thing.

Look, I don't want to get into a huge argument (although I'm not doing too badly...) but at the end of the day, that's 9 hours the OP will never get back. If he was offered compensation, why not take it?

Me either…

He chose to spend the time there, he wasn't required to do so.

If 'offered' sure take it, but if you 'demand' it, expect to get a lawyer for that.
Apple warranties the phone, not your personal time.

Sure, never demand it. If you're polite, you usually get what you deserve (karma and all that :p ).

My point was that to get his phone fixed he had to spend that amount of time. There was no other real alternative. Otherwise, he'd be stuck with an $800 phone that couldn't actually... phone.

Let me try this…..If your phone is that important of a device for life and/or work, you should have an up to date back-up. I do, wife does…..it's only common sense.

My old 3S is charged and ready to go with a PAYGo T-mobile sim.

If the manager asks you want you want for compensation then ask for a price limit from him. That way it stops the awkwardness when you ask for an AirPort Extreme and he was thinking more iPhone case!

EXCELLENT ADVICE!

My 4S stands ready but if my 5 was lost, I would replace it in a second!
