Hence why I'm skipping iOS7 all together and waiting for iOS 8. I felt like this release was rushed with all the work being done on the "makeover". This reminds me of iOS 3.

The problem with doing that is you're not safe if your device is networked, and particularly if you're browsing the web. Beyond everything else it is, this is the only way you get security updates for iOS. If you're only using it offline then it's fine, but certainly don't browse the web with something older.

I actually had more problems getting iOS 7 INSTALLED than I've had using it. There are rough edges here and there on my iPad 2 even, but mostly it's not bad, and it seems like they nail stuff down with 7.x type updates.

Well speaking as someone who's using iOS7 on an iPhone 5, iPad 3 and iPad Mini that's not my experience at all. It's just as stable if not more so than iOS6 in my experience, has regained a design consistency that was slowly lost over the last few versions of iOS and is generally a lovely experience. There's a few small issues but no more than you'd expect from an initial software release.

The only downside is old apps really do feel old when you fire them up. But that's to be expected and for any service-based app they'll either adapt or something better will come along and take over.

I'd say this for any technology (and/or company): If you insist to live on the bleeding edge, expect there to be blood.

Case and point: I had to drive 100 miles roundtrip to the closest Apple Store yesterday morning to get my fiancé's iPhone 5s replaced. It stopped booting altogether. I even tried a factory restore (hold the home button while plugging it in). I don't like her being with a phone in the house (and a shotgun), especially after she had to hold off a drunk/drugged up man from breaking in until the police arrived, but that's another story.

Something to think about: Have an old cell phone powered/plugged in. It can still dial 911. Or get a landline, it can be THAT important. Alright, I've strayed far enough from the article.

Back to the article: Neither of us have had app crashes enough that it's been noticeable. I've maybe had it happen once or twice, but I'm not sure.

I've had a few crashed that seem related to multitasking. It seems like springboard crashes and relaunches rather than a full crash.

I just assume they are having memory management issues or something and it will be straightened out in an update or two. Not a big deal.

I don't get any crashes on my 5c but my snooze function doesn't work. Also the photo app goes wonky a lot, whereby the nav bar is visible but I can see the home screen instead of my albums.

I've had Messages crash on me a few times. And Voice Memos crashes at least half the time when recording.
Also, not really a crashing issue, but when I get an SMS message or iMessage while on a phone call I have to close the Messages app (swipe up in multitask view) and then re-open it to get the message to show up.

I suppose they looked at this but didn't mention it specifically:

Are 5s crashes more prevalent only for 64-bit apps?

If 32-bit apps are also crashing significantly more often, it's more concerning since the new processor is meant to be backwards compatible and this would indicate that it isn't 100%. It's important because if the backwards compatibility is 100%, developers can opt-in to 64-bits on their own schedule, when they have the time and resources to devote to it (if ever). But if it's not 100%, some developers will be forced to rush to support the CPU (and, of course, some simply won't support the new chip for various reasons).

As far as 64-bit apps go: releasing a 64-bit version without testing it on an actual 64-bit device is a risk. <-- period.

Pure 32bit apps running on a 64bit system should not crash. I guess the apps written in 32bit that handshake with some 64bit native features of iOS7 api like camera, share, etc may crash.

Ah...

But the 5S is doing it unapologetically so....which makes it better! The reason the 5C is not crashing is due to the fact that they are, unapologetically, the old, thoroughly vetted iphone 5 , encased in an unapologetically plastic case to get rid of excess inventory.

But in all seriousness, I hope that this is not a hardware issue, but , rather software. Fixing software will just be a dot release of iOS7 but if it is hardware, well, then Apple will be take, justifiably, to task as this would be a QA issue.

My money says that in a week or two, the dot release will fix the issue and we'll all be frothing at the mouth for the new pads and Mavericks!

My use of the word 'unapologetically' is an homage to Apple's marketing spin that they do at, seemingly, every opportunity. How can we forget the overuse of the word 'magical' not so long ago...

Its cool, cause by the time my 5S comes off back order (in 2022) this problem should be solved......Im not worried

My 5S kept rebooting multiple times a day. I don't think I ever had any apps crashing but the reboots were so bad that I am getting it replaced by Apple. A restore and fresh start didn't change anything.

I've read of other people on different devices than the 5S having random reboots on iOS 7 too so I can't really tell if it's the hardware or software or both..

My iPhone 5 rebooted yesterday while selecting a playlists while using bluetooth in the car. iOS 7 needs to bake a little more.

It's a big deal when I'm writing an email and my 5S crashes and reboots and it's not saved as a draft.

Yeah I get reboots everywhere. In apps and home screen. I got the blue screen once but forgot what I was doing. I really hope my replacement works fine.

I own a 64GB Gold 5S my friend. It's called a joke. For the record, I love it, but it does crash a few times a day. That said, the iPad 3 is less stable, so I don't think it has anything to do with the 64 bit architecture.

Not had any stabilities on my iPad 3, even on the dev previews. The iPad's always been considerably more stable than iOS7 apps (specifically Safari and Chrome) on my iPhone 5.

Have you got a replacement, my battery has been terrible, and apple refuesd to replace it, so I'm going to try again!

UPS is picking up my current defective(?) 5S on Monday and the new 5S says it's processing. They didn't ask me for any questions after I explained I did a restore and didn't use a backup but the problem persisted. My battery life wasn't great either.

This is my 4th new iPhone and I've had maybe 6 spontaneous reboots. Well, not a full reboot, but a quick white screen with the black Apple logo and back to the PIN screen. This happens much faster than a cold start or warm boot. I wonder if it's the iPhone's version of restarting the Finder or Dock in OS X? Never had a restart in any of my other iPhones. Weird.

My launch 5S has a love for restarting itself randomly.

How often does it happen? Mine happened 5-10 times a day so I'm getting it replaced. Are you on 7.0.3? I feel like it only started happening when I updated.

Edit: I meant 7.0.2
