Again understand the only reason it has 16gb ram is because the 1tb and higher Mac has that built in the m1 chip they just used the same chip to save money that’s it
I love how everyone thinks that they are experts just because they watch YouTube videos or read articles on the internet. Unless you work directly with Apple, it’s just an opinion. No need to rain on people’s parade just because you convinced yourself that Apple is out to get everyone by adding an M1 chip and more ram. Every year we will have this discussion when something new and faster comes out. Just enjoy technology and be happy. No need to stress over it.

When Tim Apple stole the M1 chip, he did not realize he stole the 16gb one. When the IpadOS team told him we don't support 16gb, he said "oh hxll, at least I did not steal the M1x." Add a 2TB SSD option, so it wont look like a mistake. We will fix it later.

Making my very expensive iPad 'pro' only in the sense that I can leave lots of crap open in the background.

Crap or not would depend on what you as the user spend your time on, right? It everyone plays sudoku and minesweeper in split screen.

At the end of WWDC Tim will say and "One More Thing" iPad pro will now run a version of MacOS!

As long as they never get around to saying that some MacBook Pro will now (and only) run a new and allegedly improved version of iPadOS, or worse, of an iOS.

That's my ultimate nightmare (and would finally punch my ticket for the trip out of Apple's walled garden).

Neither your nightmare, nor what you were responding to, will ever happen.

XDR only improves the user experience the way any spec bump does.

When a ton of reviews, including from iPad fans, mention that the software side is lacking, maybe the software is lacking. Just guessing.

I think you can say software is lacking. Look at the sale of MB’s. Personally I would luv to be able to do all my PC stuff on my IPP - sadly the OS and software is lacking.

Well that single thing proves that the mac is not better at everything, but taking handwritten notes, editing images, portability, iOS infrastructure, simplicity and ease of use, scanning images, AR, Face ID, accessibility, price (model dependent), security… I don’t know. I love macs, but they’re not better than iPads for doing plenty of things.
Fair enough, but I never said better at everything. Depends on the user of course. I’m glad you enjoy your iPad. 😀

To me, the biggest issue is that despite its specs, we still aren't seeing more powerful software that really elevates the hardware. Yes, I am aware of apps like Lumafusion, Lightroom and Infinity Photo, but I think are still waiting for the big names like Final Cut Pro and photoshop to come.

What I believe is more likely to happen is that between the M1 chip and Catalyst, developers will finally be incentivised to port their Mac apps over to the iPad as well (most of the assets are already there, it's mostly just a matter of rethinking the UI to make sense for a smaller touchscreen).

Personally, I don't care about Final Cut Pro or Photoshop. I just want proper full Firefox or Chrome with extensions.

Apple tricked customers in spending more money on the higher tier iPad for no reason it was all a pr stunt, iPadOS never needed 16gb ram and also they only used the m1 as it’s cheaper to all use same chip in all products it was never about giving the iPad more power

So you are saying the RAM is on-chip across products lines, not soldered to motherboard?

WOW ! I wander if Android 12 has the same limitation?
Will this be fixed in a future IOS?
Makes buying Ram on the M1 iPad useless at this point.
They guy that pays $2400 for the 16GB M1 is the sucker.
Not a sucker if they want the internal storage at 1 TB or 2 TB. For editing 4K movies with lots of clips, etc. that storage is key. Why does the focus go to the memory vs the storage for every comment? I need the storage.

Why this focus on the memory? and only on the memory. While it is not cheap, the ability to get a 1 TB or 2 TB storage on an iPad Pro really expands the ability to handle major video editing tasks or major photo sessions.

Maybe the memory is not being used now. But the storage is being used.

Why so much focus on Apple is just screwing people.…everything doom, gloom, and conspiracy.

How many of these posters are using their iPad Pro 16GB 1 TB or 2 TB devices?

I am…..

What do people say around here when people complain about the way Apple does things? “You could get android” 🤣🤣🤣

But isn't iOS incredibly efficient with it's resources ?

You'll probably find 5 gigs in iOS is equivalent to 8-12 ( maybe more ) in MacOS in the real world usage

I don’t think it is, at least not anymore. However, it’s just accepted behavior that apps and tabs will reload on iOS and that’s how Apple can get away with minimal RAM. Meanwhile, I know my boss would scream bloody murder if that happened on Windows while working in Word and Powerpoint.

Maybe iOS 12 and older were more efficient/lean but I’ve found iPadOS 13 & 14 to be hungrier for RAM.

lol @ 16GB of RAM to run iOS. 😂

Apple, just stop. Stop trying to justify your absurdly high prices for a crippled iPad which should have already been running Mac OS years ago.

Apple gets away with minimal RAM because iOS is mobile first and the UI for iPadOS is terrible for real multitasking. Regardless of what UI tricks Apple has come up with, iOS is fundamentally a single app at a time UI model, and it's easy to save and reload state one app or tab at a time.

That would be a very bad idea. MacOS is not optimised for mobile and it would really suck. Just have a look at Windows Phone and Windows Mobile..
Apple did the best thing by creating a mobile first OS. Now that the iPad has become very powerful, they can start adding more and more features to it. Also remember that battery life is very important here. An iPad can achieve a maximum of 10 hours on battery. Imagine having real multitasking and how that would affect battery life on such a small form factor. It's easy to blame Apple for everything but they need to think about the whole user experience and make sure that 99% of iPad users get a great tablet experience. The 1% of power users or "pros" is not that important.

Is it, though?

The MacBook gains in battery life over the iPad is practically linear based on battery capacity. That suggests to me that MacOS isn't particularly heavier on battery than iPadOS is.

How big is the battery on the MacBook Pro? How big on the iPad? Also remember that the iPad has a very bright display, much brighter than any Mac.

so it must be the display then. Apple will definitely not want to risk having a bad battery life on iPads.
