If those case designs are accurate, I'm not sure that this is a major redesign of either notebook line. It seems more like a logical progression, like the transition from the iBook to the MacBook. Apple already highlighted their move to aluminum in their consumer lineup with the introduction of the aluminum iMac. If there are any design cues taken from the Air, then--again--it's already been showcased.

Of course I'm just basing these on the previously leaked images, which themselves don't tell you much. I'm just trying to say that even if the look of the new notebooks was significantly different, it may not warrant an event because Apple has already more or less announced the direction of it's industrial design. We're just waiting for the rest of the products to play catch-up.

I know the iPods got an event for their redesign, but then the iPod touch had some fairly significant new features, and I think Apple wanted to hype up the possibility of the touch as a gaming device.

In addition to that , Apple mostly doesn't do media events just to update hardware there is always some kind of software release or update too (at least in the last couple of years). However if teh macbook(pro) gets a redesign(and it will) it will be showcased because it has been a looong time since it drasticly changed looks.....hmmm it's a tricky one , even for Apple I guess.

+1

2 weeks apple.....2 more weeks....

If nothing happens on tuesday i think it will be too long for many of them since we all been waiting since early summer.

I've been waiting since January - the new Montevina chipset was originally due out in May. So I figured I'd wait. Now its October and no new laptops. I'm pissed off at this point.

Though there is one thing to say - perhaps with all the turmoil in the financial markets, and with the presidential election in the US in its last month, perhaps now isn't the best time to have a media event. Either wait until the election is over, or just push out the new laptops without the hoopla. If its not the latter, we wont see an media event until November 11th, possibly the 18th...

I'm glad I'm not in dire need of a new Macbook. The wait and non-information would kill me. Let them come when they are ready. Don't rush it.

I'm not in dire need, but I'd like to upgrade. If I don't like what I see out there, I will buy some memory and a larger hard drive. I am hoping for good new Macbook Pros tho. Having a 802.11n wireless card at home would be MOST helpful too!

...any suggestions for a cheap but fairly durable Mac laptop that will be good for quick drops into Internet cafes for blogging, watching movies on a couple long train rides and can sync an iPhone?

well, here's a suggestion (I just got back from 2 1/2 weeks in Oz):
1) WAIT on the laptop. All the internet cafes i visited (Darwin, Broome, Kununurra) had their own computers for me to use to access mail, the internet, etc. If you're going to an internet cafe you really don't need to lug your own machine along. From a hotel room, that's a different matter (see 3), below)
2) if you've got an iPhone watch your movies on it. no, it can't match the full laptop screen experience, but it can be a very satisfactory accommodation when circumstances require it. traveling light was a real pleasure.
3) take an airport express to enable you to use your iPhone wirelessly in hotel rooms that provide only an ethernet cable. i didn't think to do that and wished i had.

just a couple thoughts. served me well on my trip. only problem i had was at cafes without safari on any of their computers, i twice had problems accessing MobileMe (they wouldn't let me download another browser to their computers). Most of the IC's had one or more units with safari.

As mentioned before, there's not much point in having an event for a redesigned case and spec upgrade.

I would think so too but not if a major redisign has been a while ... especialy not if the macbook goes aluminium. For minor facelifts there will probably not be an event...

I just promised myself that i will limit my Macrumors visits to 1, if the macbook pro doesnt come out on the 14th. Starting to get addicted, if im not all ready...

I'm starting to think the new MacBook's won't get an event. I mean, why would they? Unless there is something hugely revolutionary that Apple are going to do, then Steve would just be telling us all the facts we already know. We can expect a processor bump and potentially a dedicated GPU and LED backlit display. They'll be made out of aluminium in a similar design to the current ones and the Air.

I could only see them holding an event if the MacBook Pro was to get a Blu-Ray drive and there was some other significant feature being added.

I can see Steve at MWSF09 saying, "We're really pleased with the new production method that we introduced for the MacBook back in October" and just giving a bit of an insight into the 'Brick Production' methods, if they are legit.

Well for the 14th maybe you can expect a refresh with a bump in specs and not much else.

IF the new brick thing relates to how they will build the laptops there is a very good chance that they don't want to announce too much until the process is refined enough to cope with some decent volume as they would need to get probably a few thousand into the stores fairly quickly and have a bit more than that ready to go online, or at least shipping within a week.

At least a refresh in the processor speeds and hard drive space would be a noticable improvement, maybe a slight chance of a SSD option.

I would be very very surprised if they had no media event for the unveiling of their newly redesigned laptops. Unless it is just a refresh in the current line, then I can understand that.

Either way I think they'll come soon. Apple might be holding back because (I could be wrong) their stock drops when they release new products and they certainly don't need that dropping any further than it has the last 2 weeks.

I hope the mini gets updated soon as it's greatly outdated for the price. I'm all set to build a cheap hackintosh if there is no update before xmas.

Remember Monday is a US holiday. In the past Apple has held events on a Wednesday following a Monday holiday. Which would mean an announcement could come today, seven days prior to the event.

It may be Columbus Day on Monday but I would not call it a Holiday. As far as I am aware no one cares about this day - apart from perhaps a few Government workers (and even then I'm not sure...)

With all of the rumors coming from everywhere about updates....if there aren't any next week, I would expect Apple stock to go down.

Well perhaps the World's Economic current condition has changed things? Ya Think?

That's DEFINITELY the reason, and nothing else. The products are ready but Apple will NEVER release anything in the middle of such a turmoil. Why?

1) The relevant public will NOT notice and the launches shall not have any impact in light of the insanity of financial news;

2) Consumption, especially in the crumbling US economy and beginning also in many European economies, is sharply down;

3) Currencies are floating wildly, and interbank or intercompany financing is absolutely frozen all over the world. Trading companies are practically inactive as of now, and foreign markets would pay an undesirable premium for Apple products.

So any such launches are gonna happen in November, and this is an optimistic estimate. Don't dream about 14 October, as it's NOT gonna happen unless it's just about minor things and speed bumps.

Apple has a problem. The last big media event was sold as a "big deal" and people flew in from the east coast to attend and what happened? Steve goes on stage and talks about some un-important incremental updates to an existing product. Does anyone really think anyone will want to go to one of these again? Apple would be embarrased to call another even so soon unless there really was something new

If Apple were to call a big event and put up another three story tall banner and then announce "We have a new manufacturing process for the aluminium case, Oh and one more thing: The CPU clock speed is now 8% faster. That's it thanks for coming." That would be the last one people would bother to attend.

I think they will do this "upgrade" as a silent change on the web.

Only theyre really not.

I could get a W500 with this:

"ThinkPad W500 (customized) - $1,734.40

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo processor T9400 (2.53GHz 1066MHz 6MBL2)
Display type: 15.4" WSXGA+ TFT, w/ CCFL Backlight
System graphics: ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 with 512MB VRAM
Total memory: 4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)

Pointing device: UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) with Fingerprint Reader
Camera: 1.3 Megapixel Integrated Camera
Hard drive: 320 GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm
Optical device: DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Slim (Serial ATA)
System expansion slots: Express Card Slot & PC Card Slot
Bluetooth: Integrated Bluetooth PAN
Integrated WiFi wireless LAN adapters: Intel WiFi Link 5300 (AGN)"

For cheaper than the base MBP, even with the edu discount. And its video card wont die. And it has DDR3 and a faster processor, etc.

yet but you don't get leopard, :) you get vista, enjoy

I don't think I can last another 6 days since we've been talking about a new MacBook / MacBook Pro since the MacBook Air rumors nine months ago. PLEASE BE THE 14TH! PLEEEASE!

been checking this site for a very long time, but finally registered myself to join this endless conversations.

I have a macbook 2,16 now with 2 GB ram but I'm waiting for the new MBP and hoping on a config of 2?8GhZ, 4GB ram and 1GB Vram.
I need this for school, cause I'm in a webdesign and video-editing course.
Please, apple, let it be, october 14 is coming close

My speculation is that they will be released on tuesday without a event. In 2006 they were released without an event, this is really no different than that update was. We have all been waiting a long time. In my opinion, the economy has no effect on Apple, the economy wont be straightened out anytime soon, and apple released updates right before a presidential election before.. That is not effecting apple and what they plan to do.

If they are not released in october, then they are waiting till the UK back to school promo is over. Although they have released updates during back to school promos. If this is the case then they may be released in november, if not then macworld. Now that is just my opinion but it is probably wrong because Apple has been proving alot of people wrong recently. i just work for an Apple retail store. ;)

I just hope they come out soon because my girlfriend's stupid Dell laptop she got 4 years ago at the beginning of college **** the bed, and I've been telling her to hold of because they will refresh the Macbooks soon. She'd much rather spend the money on a new version if its coming out soon, though her need for a new laptop is getting dire-- plus I want to play with whatever new coolness Apple comes out with:D
