So, um, how would NOT releasing a product that has already incurred all it's R&D costs and has had many units already built make ANY sort of financial sense?

Simple...Apple historically relies on the mass advertisement and sale of a lot more units in proportion with a favorable "launch" momentum. The timing would be nothing short of horrible if totally new laptops are launched to a market that won't buy them. And no, the US market WON'T buy any premium machines right now, nor will European markets or other emerging markets.

Again: trading companies' and interbanking financing are practically FROZEN. Any loans you might want demand huge premiums that nobody is ready to assume.

Besides, by not launching now, the added costs are negligible. And they won't incur in additional transoceanic shipping costs in a moment of market insanity.

Where on earth did this idea that glass trackpads = trackpad display come from? Am I the only one who thinks they may be doing this because glass looks cooler than the regular trackpad material and doesn't wear down/stain?

Yes. Having a display in the trackpad is the dumbest thing ever. Why would I want to take my eyes off the screen to look at a little trackpad? Makes no sense at all. That fake picture a couple of weeks ago with the dock IN the glass trackpad was just ridiculous. So, you want me to look down and touch one of the dock buttons to open something? Why? Using glass for reasons such as wear or something like that, now that I could see.

Eco-crisis. You mean the biggest lie in human history.

i think u got me wrong or most likely i expressed myself wrong...
i am just annoyed that all people here argue that it wouldnt be clever to realese a product in the near future due to the eco crisis.
but its not the case.... the world will keep going if u want or not and the crisis wont fade away by november. the crisis will hold our breaths for years or decades... its nonsense therefore to holdback a product

u guys really think apple is in the middle of the universe? apple has a market share of 8 percent or whatever. u think the times and newpaper will mention apple in their headlines? man i dont wanna flame u or something but think more reasonable.
holding back would mean that the stocks dropps so they are in need to refresh it. in a time of eco crisis only the most innovative and strongest will surive... and if u are selling 1year old hadware noone will pay for it.

Surely you need to take a more careful look at the level of exposition that Apple has in the media...it's just the opposite proportion of its market share...and no one will pay for "new" and more expensive hardware when money is simply not there.

It's obvious that things will continue even during times of crisis...but THIS very moment is of pure peak insanity. Apple is not stupid to release anything like mindblowing laptops next week, when all eyes are turned to the bankruptcy of a whole nation called Iceland, to the foundation of new geopolitical principles and to the freezing of money markets all over.

Yes, this would be a great idea if the machines weren't already designed and built. But they are. And they're computers. Their value is tied to the crazy advance of technology. Once a computer is designed and built, it's value begins to plummet. Within weeks, usually. Meaning if they released later, the products would not be as valuable. I'm sorry, but I don't see how not releasing could possibly put Apple in a better financial situation than just selling these things. They've already paid to make them. Might as well put them out there. Some people will still buy them.

Too bad for the 'Gotta Have it Now' crowd

There's a slice of the population that just HAS to have the new MacBook now. Too bad for them. And I would bet that half those people don't really have to have it...they just 'want' it.

So it's against that backdrop (and against the backdrop of people squirreling their money rather than spending it) that Apple might be wise to hold off on the introduction/announcement until after the election. Because, as we all know, once Obama 'wins' and floats to earth inside his clear bubble waving the wand, the sun will come out, flowers will magically bloom, and the Munchkins will all appear from behind fake potted plants. Things will instantly be 'swell' again (or within a few weeks). And within that little cocoon of manufactured 'swellness' will be the perfect time for Apple to unveil the new MacBooks. Still in time for the Holiday shopping season. That's the way this is shaping up.

Only theyre really not.

I could get a W500 with this:

"ThinkPad W500 (customized) - $1,734.40

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo processor T9400 (2.53GHz 1066MHz 6MBL2)
Display type: 15.4" WSXGA+ TFT, w/ CCFL Backlight
System graphics: ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 with 512MB VRAM
Total memory: 4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)

Pointing device: UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) with Fingerprint Reader
Camera: 1.3 Megapixel Integrated Camera
Hard drive: 320 GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm
Optical device: DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Slim (Serial ATA)
System expansion slots: Express Card Slot & PC Card Slot
Bluetooth: Integrated Bluetooth PAN
Integrated WiFi wireless LAN adapters: Intel WiFi Link 5300 (AGN)"

For cheaper than the base MBP, even with the edu discount. And its video card wont die. And it has DDR3 and a faster processor, etc.

sounds great. only drawback: 5.8 pounds. also don't know how good the screen and the sound is.

but anyway, yes apple has to come up with something like this for $2000 and at 4.5 pounds or less with a great screen and sound to be able to compete.

anything with 5.8 pounds would have to be 3 GHz or Quadcore or 18" screen to be justified. Real pros might love something like that.

Maybe it would just be a quick launcher or perhaps have options for most commonly used functions depending on the application your using at the time, or maybe its glass because it will last longer, or maybe it was all just a hoax to get us going lol

Why hold a big noisy event about laptops right when everyone's concerned about their futures and how "they're going to put food on their family," to paraphrase G.W.? It almost seems inappropriate. Which is another reason I think any update will be without an event. But there will be an update.

Having said that, I agree that if the release itself gets bumped back, it's unlikely to do with the economy directly.

I remember a while back someone directly from Apple saying that they will be releasing new redesigned Macs in September to combat the clones.

and the money will come by november?
so u wanna tell apply to freeze all sells and wait for a better economic situation?
well the company will have fun.
sure people will spend less but if they spend they want somethin worth the money. who would spend 2k for a mpb with 200 gb if the competitors have 320 or 400 avaible in a couple of months?
u are not neutral... therefore ur arguments doesnt make much sense.

"they're going to put food on their family," to paraphrase G.W.?

My point is that Apple is NOT gonna release anything next week...not ever. Late November should be fine, on the other hand.

As for Dubya's quote, there is nothing better than his statement yesterday or 2 days ago that, in proposing a first step to solve the economic crisis, his idea was that "we must do something about it"...nothing could be stupider.

I just don't see the point in going 10/11 months without updating these things.

Seems (and excuse me if this has been posted already and I've read through some and it seems it's been hinted) that a good bit of this community here is hell bent on blaming Apple for release dates they have never officially declared.

One post I noticed was "Apple you can't do this to me" yet Apple hasn't said anything. People are taking these rumors and then holding Apple to them and when nothing comes around it's Apple's fault? How so?

I can understand if Apple said "We'll be releasing new laptops on the 14th" then missing the date, THEN yah, I can blame Apple. But if yourmammasinsideinfoonapple.com said they're releasing laptops on the 14th and the date is missed, even if 20 web sites say it (and they only said it because one said it) then it's not Apple's fault.

I know the "Dell" community doesn't run around going "COME ON where are new model inspirons you promised us" (yah bad example but you get the point) because HP said dell might be releasing new laptops.

They'll release them when they are damn good and ready and NOT because tuaw said they will. If it's a matter of "I've got money and want the latest and greatest" well then buy one now and deal with it. Technology changes daily, Apple is one of the few companies that likes to try to stay on top and release new products when the technology is approved for mainstream use and do it with style (like events or press releases).

But the blaming Apple for missing unofficial release dates is a common thing here. It's like what a person said last night "We tend to believe the first thing we read on the internet regardless if it's true or not" and that's the case here.

So if it happens it happens, if not oh well, when Apple officially announces it then we can start the countdown.

stupid laptop updates....taking up all the news...

hellooooo Apple.. we need new MacPros.......

bueller?

bueller?

Easy answer:

Currently, WE. KNOW. NOTHING. They'll happen when they happen, shut up with the whining why the current models will instantaneously break when the new ones come out and that's why you need to wait for a new one.

Has Apple ever shipped new MacBooks in October? Not that I can recall. There was a minor bump last November -- but I repeat it was a minor bump. If a major revision is at hand, why would Apple not wait until MacWorld Expo when the entire world is watching and no longer preoccupied with the election or (I hope) the plunging stock market? An October release makes no sense.

Incidentally, January is a terrible time for a trade show. Move MacWorld Expo to June so that Apple can release new Macs in time for the new school year.

Agreed. I'd still really like to see MBs ASAP.

14th of October will happen, but nothing fancy

Pretty reliable sources from Nvidia have seen the "new" Macbook and the "new" Macbook Pro. The machines haven't changed externally, only internally.
So for the people who can't wait: 14th of October there will be an update, for the people who want an alu Macbook: it isn't going to happen for a while.
Because the look hasn't changed, the prices can drop. I also dream of an alu Macbook with great GPU, great autonomy, great portability and sturdiness for about 750$, but I'm afraid it will remain a dream.
So, the 14th of October I'm buying a white Macbook.

I just got home from my local best buy and they took all there mb and mbp off display and i asked about it and they told me they were out of all the notebooks and should have some new ones in soon. I guess next week still can be a possibility or they could just be getting more of the old ones, i dunno.

been checking this site for a very long time, but finally registered myself to join this endless conversations.

I have a macbook 2,16 now with 2 GB ram but I'm waiting for the new MBP and hoping on a config of 2?8GhZ, 4GB ram and 1GB Vram.
I need this for school, cause I'm in a webdesign and video-editing course.
Please, apple, let it be, october 14 is coming close

Honestly if you're at school and already have a kickass computer, why waste money you don't have (i.e., why spend years paying for it on a student loan) on a slightly more kickass computer?

You don't need 4GB, 2.8GHz, etc for web design, and you don't need it for a college course on graphic design or video production.

I don't see where every new Apple product needs an Apple Event. They've been snoozefests of late and Steve Job's health has received more attention than the products he was announcing. A newlook MB and MBP is great, but do they deserve an Apple Event? Hardly. Apple Events should be reserved for something special, hence the word "event" tied to it.

I don't think the mystery product transition spoke of at last quarter's conference call has occurred yet so I think new products are due. The MBA is quite long in the tooth especially.
