That's DEFINITELY the reason, and nothing else. The products are ready but Apple will NEVER release anything in the middle of such a turmoil. Why?

1) The relevant public will NOT notice and the launches shall not have any impact in light of the insanity of financial news;

2) Consumption, especially in the crumbling US economy and beginning also in many European economies, is sharply down;

3) Currencies are floating wildly, and interbank or intercompany financing is absolutely frozen all over the world. Trading companies are practically inactive as of now, and foreign markets would pay an undesirable premium for Apple products.

So any such launches are gonna happen in November, and this is an optimistic estimate. Don't dream about 14 October, as it's NOT gonna happen unless it's just about minor things and speed bumps.
you are too sure to be true!!!!!!:p

I would be very very surprised if they had no media event for the unveiling of their newly redesigned laptops. Unless it is just a refresh in the current line, then I can understand that.

Either way I think they'll come soon. Apple might be holding back because (I could be wrong) their stock drops when they release new products and they certainly don't need that dropping any further than it has the last 2 weeks.

I hope the mini gets updated soon as it's greatly outdated for the price. I'm all set to build a cheap hackintosh if there is no update before xmas.

Does anyone really expect anything more than a refresh? We're not looking at a groundbreaking new device, just MBs with a few updated features. I'm sure we'll see updated specs, maybe a dedicated graphics card, probably just a better integrated one though, maybe LED, Al casing, maybe a better multi-touch trackpad. I would be totally fine with that. I never expected anything crazy like a glass trackpad or a tablet or anything like that. This is still just going to be a MB. It's just that with the current specs, it doesn't make financial sense to buy.

Easy answer:

Currently, WE. KNOW. NOTHING. They'll happen when they happen, shut up with the whining why the current models will instantaneously break when the new ones come out and that's why you need to wait for a new one.

I think your on the wrong website, why so angry?

Yeah gota say I think apple could loose a few customers if they dont do anything on the 14th, has been a long wait.

Do we really need a media event for new laptops?

After all, haven't the last couple of media events been somewhat boring and anti-climatic. Why get all worked up about a new laptop? They'll turn up when the turn up...

I too am in the collection of people getting very frustrated with Apple. I keep saying to friends that if they don't come out soon, I'm just going to get a PC but I don't know if I could bring myself to do that. I'm fairly new on the Apple bandwagon, but, I don't recall any event for laptop updates. The only event I remember that was REALLY hardware related was the Intel transition announcement. So...perhaps this will just be dropped into the store? Maybe we're expecting far too much from Apple in this? We'll see, but, I can't hold out much longer than the 14th. I've been at university since late August holding out as well as I can and I don't know how much longer it will last.

One more thing: I'd have to disagree with the people saying Apple won't release these because of the economy. Apple is kind if an anomaly. Their customers are rabidly devoted. Even regardless of this fact, the MacBooks and Pros are falling behind compared to other computers. They HAVE to release these. If they leave the notebook line as it stands, then the economy will make them suffer even more. They don't really have a choice but to release them before years end.

INSIDE NEWS:

an employee of "switch", the belgian apple retailstores, did mysterious about the new MB and MBP's but wanted to tell that apple is shipping some stuff to Belgium this week.

I guess it doesn't matter, I have to buy an MBP next week whether they announce a new model or not. I've pushed it back long enough, it's starting to cause workflow problems.

Ditto.

I find those who forcefully say "just buy now!" (i'm not referring to all the 'just-buy-now'ers) seem annoyed with us for waiting. But then it seems like many times they are the ones who buy new models often, so if they happen to buy tech that is half a year old, it doesn't matter as much because they will replace it in a year. For me, I've been saving for this machine for several years, and won't be able to replace it for a long time, so I don't want to get a machine that is already dated when a few weeks patience would have yielded brand new tech.

But I've held off long enough that my work flow is hampered and a week is about all I can afford to wait.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

They have refreshed the laptop lime several times without a press release so there is still hope. I hate to hear this grim news.

Only theyre really not.

I could get a W500 with this:

"ThinkPad W500 (customized) - $1,734.40

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo processor T9400 (2.53GHz 1066MHz 6MBL2)
Display type: 15.4" WSXGA+ TFT, w/ CCFL Backlight
System graphics: ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 with 512MB VRAM
Total memory: 4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)

Pointing device: UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) with Fingerprint Reader
Camera: 1.3 Megapixel Integrated Camera
Hard drive: 320 GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm
Optical device: DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Slim (Serial ATA)
System expansion slots: Express Card Slot & PC Card Slot
Bluetooth: Integrated Bluetooth PAN
Integrated WiFi wireless LAN adapters: Intel WiFi Link 5300 (AGN)"

For cheaper than the base MBP, even with the edu discount. And its video card wont die. And it has DDR3 and a faster processor, etc.

I'll have to chime in here. I just got in the W500 today to go with our other eval units (T400, X200, X300) and the W500 is a friggin BRICK. It's heavy as all hell. There's no IR port on it either for a remote. Sure, with my edu discount the MBP is $1800 and I would only get 2GB RAM, less video RAM and a 200GB HD for about the same cost as the W500 but I do get: IR port, MagSafe power adapter (has saved me MANY times), iLife suite, multi-gesture trackpad and most importantly, OS X. :)

I think the MacBooks will be released on tuesday 14th. It will be a silent update because there isn't much to tell for a keynote. They showed the latest software on september 9th, and won't show other a month later. They will do that in january.

They won't do a keynote just to show new hardware.

I find it funny how some have said Apple will lose customers if they dont release on the 14th. How so? What are the alternatives to a Mac? Aren't Mac users vehemently against using a PC (or so it seems)? Apple knows this and we all know this. Fanbois will just continue to wait [begrudgingly].

I have no need for a MB or MBP and while interested in the new designs and features and specs of anything Apple, when it shows will not really matter to me. However I am curious as to when the MBA will see a change in specs as it is running as released in January, but while I drool most for the MBA it doesn't mean I will be getting one when they get bumped, if at all.

So, um, how would NOT releasing a product that has already incurred all it's R&D costs and has had many units already built make ANY sort of financial sense?

yet but you don't get leopard, :) you get vista, enjoy

u really dont get it hu?
even though leopard is better than vista its unacceptable to build "low quality" components for a PRO machine... and charging this much money for it.
leopard is worth 130 bucks... the hardware difference is worth 500-600 bucks.
i am willing to spend a bit more money on a good os, still 300-400 bucks just get in apples pocket or is leopard worth 500 bucks?

argh i am getting angry again...

eco crisis my ass...

"1) The relevant public will NOT notice and the launches shall not have any impact in light of the insanity of financial news;"

u guys really think apple is in the middle of the universe? apple has a market share of 8 percent or whatever. u think the times and newpaper will mention apple in their headlines? man i dont wanna flame u or something but think more reasonable.
holding back would mean that the stocks dropps so they are in need to refresh it. in a time of eco crisis only the most innovative and strongest will surive... and if u are selling 1year old hadware noone will pay for it.

If they had glass track pads and the ability to see the dock and directly access it from the trackpads like rumours a few weeks ago then i think that would be a big deal. Especially if there were other multi touch ideas which we weren't aware of. Right about now though id settle for a big splash of the new macbooks on the apple home page on tuesday!!! :D

Not gonna happen.

New laptops in January with SnowLeop. At best a speed bump between now and then. Sorry.

I mean the nice thing about it is, you buy a computer when you have money. If you are waiting for something, then you wait, and no sense getting mad when it doesn't come "when you want". Look at those waiting for the i7 processor, sure it will be 16 times faster than computers built 6 months from now, but you've gotta wait 2 years. I'll might own 3 different computers before it comes out...

3 computers in 2 years!? Damn. How much underwear do you go through?

Where on earth did this idea that glass trackpads = trackpad display come from? Am I the only one who thinks they may be doing this because glass looks cooler than the regular trackpad material and doesn't wear down/stain?

Eco-crisis. You mean the biggest lie in human history.

The Brick

If you look at the "leaked" macbook case photo, the bottom is carved out of one solid block of aluminum. All the components would fit right in there and be covered with the keyboard.
