there is so much conflicting info in this thread I'm heading to the store to straighten this out.

gl with the free part.
CS is notorious for conflicting information. (ATT or any other phone company).

get what was told you documented and they'll be forced to give it to you , make sure you do this within your 30 day cancellation so they will take your threat seriously.

just in case anybody else out there was wondering, i just called them up no more than five minutes ago, asked for them to downgrade my plan from 1500 texts ($29.99) to the 200 with unlimited mobile-to-mobile ($24.99), the girl did some checking up and i got it switched within a matter of minutes, so yes it is possible for us iphoners to get it.

hope that helps someone.

so this means for sure that the unlimited M2M SMS is NOT part of the packages that the iPhone Data Plans offer .... [you must do the $5 add-on for this]?

Confirming that this indeed is true. I just called a few minutes ago and got the 40.00 plan dropped down to 24.99 which is just the basic 20.00 data iPhone plan + 4.99 for unlimited mobile to mobile texting. So to the OP, the normal 20.00 iPhone plan does not include M2M texting, you must add the 5 dollar option.

triple confirm this. just called att rep (surprisingly VERY VERY NICE LADY). Told me that 1500 does not include the unlimited but I can def add that to the plan, so i drop to 200 msg plan and added 4.99 to unlimited att m2m plan.

I stopped by the ATT store this afternoon. Grabbed a brochure from the kiosk and asked the reps about it. They said ATT doesn't offer this, they charge for each message no matter what network it's sent to.

I showed them the brochure, they all were dumfounded. "I've never seen that," etc. was the general response. The manager said that is a potential plan, then pointed to the unlimited SMS option. Um, I didn't see mention of unlimited M2M SMS' being $20 extra, but he stuck to his guns.

Now this board is saying it's a $4.99 add-on.

How confusing can you get.

BTW the smart ass rep who helped me (some kid) said "why don't you go sue them."

Great first impression with ATT. They better be glad they have the iPhone. That is the only way they have ever made a red cent from me. As soon as another carrier gets it, I'm out.

BTW, that brochure is false advertising. Even the reps said it was very misleading.

Clever.

so after reading all of the posts numerous times... this the conclusion i've come to.

with the typical iphone plans... we get unlimited calls between AT&T customers but ALL text messages go against the 200.

am i correct?

Sounds right to me. The 200 messages our plan will make no difference if the other person is ATT/Cing/Sprint, whomever. That's why it is so misleading b/c they tie unlimited texts into the M2M unlimited voice. Basicially, they just wan't people to run buy the text packs and give them more revenue.

Misleading advertising. Cute.

ridiculous

Okay, all you have to do is log into your account, click on your rate plan and features, and READ.

It's all laid out there, I really don't get what's so difficult about it. If you have unlimited m2m texts, IT WILL SAY YOU HAVE UNLIMITED M2M TEXTS. If it doesn't say that, you DON'T have it.

READ!

Wow, I appreciate the helpful advice. Imagine you are a brand new customer (I am), then read the circled paragraph on the ATT flyer in my first post. Does it not sound like M2M2M airtime and texts are unlimited on ATT?

Sure does to me.

I now understand I have to buy an additional service for that brochure's statement to be true. That's fine, but misleading. It sounds as if everyone on the ATT network not only has unlimited M2M voice, but unlimited texting. I don't pay extra for M2M voice, so why should I have to pay for unlimited M2M texts to other ATT customers? That's what the brouchure states.

Well, for what its worth, I've sent/received 20 or so texts to my wife (also has an iPhone) but when I check my account usage online,it says I've used 0 of 200 texts. We're both just on the basic plan. Hmm...

Has there been some time? I know that when I check my Verizon usage of texts, it doesn't update until a full day later.

OP, I can see why you feel frustrated, but I'm guessing there really isn't much you can do.

Yes, several days. We did most of our texting last weekend.
Show off. ;)

Hm, are you two on a family talk plan? I think those terms might be slightly different and/or if you were already an existing AT&T customer-- your existing plan might have different terms that carry over, no? I dunno, just guessing as I really have no experience/ knowledge of this industry.

We're both on individual plans, and we both switched from other companies. Initially, I thought that at&t was so overwhelmed last weekend that the texts just flew under the radar. Now I'm not so sure.

SI think those terms might be slightly different and/or if you were already an existing AT&T customer-- your existing plan might have different terms that carry over, no?
I am really hoping on this. I am already on a sweet family plan where we have 450 shared minutes and UNLIMITED texts to ANYONE. If I get the iPhone and add the $20 package, my mom will be really upset if that drops us down to 200 texts/month.

Hey, I found this plan on the att wireless website:
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-ph....jsp?LOSGId=&skuId=sku780115&catId=cat1470003

Messaging Starter w/Unlimited Mobile to Mobile Messaging

Messaging Starter - 200 Messages (10 cents/additional messages)
You have the freedom to message any way to any one - text, picture, video and IM - without worrying what each message costs. That means every message counts the same. You can send and receive ANY combination of messages. Want to send all picture messages? No problem. All IMs? Go ahead and chat away - send and receive messages for less than 3 cents each!

UNLIMITED Mobile to Mobile - Unlimited text, picture & video messages
Now AT&T's wireless subscribers can exchange unlimited text, picture and video messages! Instant Messages, alerts, off-network, premium messages, and messages to/from non-AT&T customers will be deducted from your Messaging Starter allowance.

So it looks like for $10/mo. you can get the unlimited M2M texting.

ETA: When I click on that plan it gives you a 'special' package rate:
$4.99 Messaging Starter +
$5 UNLIMITED M2M Messaging
√ LIMITED TIME OFFER!
200 Messages
$0.10/add'l N/A UNLIMITED

- So yeah, $5/mo. for unlimited M2M texting.

The end.

I just got back from the AT&T Store and I'm not sure how she did it, but she added unlimited M2M texts for $5/month. So no probs here.

I looked on my receipt she printed as confirmation, and it says IPHONE DATA +200 & M2M , for what its worth.

My wife and I added the $4.99 unlimited M2M texts to our family plan. The catch is that it's $4.99 per line...so it will cost us $10 per month total. Not too bad as much as we'll use it though and 200 texts wasn't going to last us long considering the fact that if she sends me a text, and my phone receives that text, it counts as 2 of our family plan texts.
