That just won't happen.

iPod touch: $299

iPad mini: $299-$199?? (speculating)

Tell me, who is going to buy the new iPod touch now?

Unlocked iPhone - $649-$849
LTE iPad - $629-829

Who would buy the iPhone?

Different sized devices have different jobs for different people. There are some people who might decide to buy a 7.85" iPad instead of an iPod touch, but if people want something that can fit in a pocket and take pretty decent photos, they aren't going to buy the iPad.

This is yet another tempest in a teapot.

People who want an iPod and not an iPad.

I know what you mean but surely there will still be people who want a smaller device for say going to the gym. Sure they could get a classic or a nano but they can't be used for web browsing, checking emails and playing games.

I believe and hope there will be an iPad mini.

the point of releasing the stretched version of the iPhone (with retina display, LTE, GPS, A6 Processor....) is to accommodate people who are in the market for a 7" tablet.

I must be some kind of weirdo then, because I think a 4" 16:9 cellphone for $300 with an expensive two year contract is worlds away from a $300(?) 7.85" 4:3 tablet with no contract.

IMO, 99+% of the iPhone's are sold with a contract. FWIW, at the end of your contract, the operator must let you unlock your phone if you wish. Therefore, there is no need for anyone to buy unlocked iPhone from Apple, unless you travel a lot outside the US.

This is the power of the cellphone business model, Apple will get a kick back from the operator for every contract that is sold. That's why, $199 will get you the latest iPhone (instead of $649). If Apple market iPad mini at $199, or even $249, $300, Apple, still can not make as much profit as the iPhone. So why bother?

I'm going to assume the new iMac's and stuff with come out along with the iPad mini if they have an event in october.

Right. They apparently have a retina 13" Macbook and iMacs, so add a Mini and your all set for a show.

Anyway, this A6 is going to find it's way into everything, so a Mini with it would be great. I also think they might update the New iPad with it. (just to make recent buyers furious, which they are very good at :D )

Well I have to say, I'm more pessimistic after the Keynote yesterday. How can they ever sell an iPad mini for anything less than $399 with the prices they have on the Touch. Plus to me there is just not a marketing niche in Apple's lineup for the mini. Think about it - if they came out with the mini at any price close to the Touch, it would completely kill the Touch market and they've put too much effort in that product now with yesterday's announcement. They may come out with one (and I hope they do), but I bet it is announced next Spring with the next upgrade to the regular iPad and at a $349-399 price range. They will be selling it based upon features not price. In the meantime, since I'm in the market for a 7" device, I think I'll go ahead and buy the new 7" Kindle Fire HD. It seems to be a better product than the Google Nexus 7.

Because an increase in the Android based tablet marketshare is not something that won't eventually eat into the iPad sales if more and more people buy other suitable 7 inch tablets. Most people stay on the same ecosystem and hardly move to another OS mainly because of all the Apps they buy.

And why assume that pricing it at 300 or 350 isn't going to make a "lot" of profit? The thing can be done without significant changes to the production lines using mostly the same parts that go into the other iOS products.

Based on iSuppli's figures, cost of the 16 GB model of the Nexus 7 is US$159.25 per unit. Let's assume that the iPad mini, if it was ever produced, the cost would be around the same number, therefore it is simply not as profitable as iPhone or iPad.

What Apple are doing now is to make the screen size of the iPhone longer, to stop users migrating to Nexus 7. A lot of people are going to think about it again before switching: Why carrying a smart phone + a Nexus 7, instead you can carry just one iPhone 5, and it's far more portable. And it is also cheaper to buy just one single iPhone 5, instead of both a smartphone and a Nexus 7.

Sure.
The rumor was always for Oct.
Apple is not going to let Google and Amazon have that market to themselves.
Sooner or later Apple will announce a smaller iPad.

IMO they should get rid of the touch.
Who buys that thing!?!
It's an extra redundent device in your pocket.
Just get the phone.

I think they would have made the screen a mite bigger than 4" if they intended to take sales from the 7" tablet market... I don't think they can be compared.

Hmm, Jim specifically said the iPad mini won't be introduced on Sept 12! There's a separate event in October for it. Be patience.

pretty much all of the iPhone 5 rumors and photos were absolutely correct

and i'm sure the iPad mini leaks are also correct. it even shows the backside microphone, but curiously no backside flash

the leaks make it look just as thin as the new iPod touch

Next month

but they can't have a keynote for just one product

perhaps iMac or 13" retina MacBook

or even a minor update to the 9.7" iPad … iPad 3S ??? thinner, lighter, lightening connector, earpods … anodized black aluminum

There is no need to buy an unlocked phone? That's just plain silly, unless you enjoy sending a lot of money to the telecoms companies each month to pay for that phone you just got through them. I'd rather own the hardware, shop around for the best phone deal, and spend what I use each month, rather than what the contract (which includes interest on that loan they made for you) demands.

I thought apple might simply announce the demise of the ipad2 at the October event when launching a mini. I see apple carrying a dated model kind of strange. Force buyers into an iPod touch at 299 or a proper iPad retina . . .with the middle occupied by the 7" lower cost offering mini at 399 and up.

I Agree. Even with the iMac or Macbook, it wouldn't be a very long Keynote. No software to announce either. I like where you're heading with the anodized black look, I'm down to buy that.

What?

Hoping for one...not a chance.

Expecting one? Absolutely.

Theirs too many rumors indicating it's as real as the leaks of the iP5.

My Nexus 7 has confirmed exactly what I thought. I really enjoy that size for it's portability & more.

I will have an iPad Mini on release day. No hesitation whatsoever.

Hoping for one yes, but if it stalls and doesn't come out for awhile I'll be fine since I bought an iPad 3 on release day, I think I'm good for awhile yet. When I upgrade next time, I really hope there is an iPad Mini to consider.

the leaked photos makes it inevitable just like the iPhone 5 photos. their security is utter crapola

How are you liking your Nexus 7?

When I started thinking about how I'd use a tablet, I found my options will be pretty open. I'm pretty much ensnared with iTunes for my music collection - but I'd keep that on my phone, not a tablet.

90% of my tablet use would be for surfing, bank apps, social media, maybe a few games, ebooks and watching TV shows/movies when I travel for work. When I looked at my Apps I realized, most of them are readily available. And I really don't care where I download a movie/TV show from. (I ususally consider it disposable content. I ususally rent movies to watch once or spend a few bucks to see an episode of a show I missed.)

The Nexus specs seem really nice. And if they come up with a 3G/4G model as rumored, I may give it a long hard look if it's cheaper than the iPad mini.
