I have seen hundreds of i-devices and have yet to see one with a bad screen. Either you guys are super, super, super picky or super unlucky.

Do you guys return monitors/TVs like this too?

Frankly, I'm amazed by this. The iPad 2 in particular was badly affected, it took me four attempts to find one that didn't have a strong yellow tint. I had two iPad Airs and they were fine but this Air 2 has a minor screen defect which is quite noticeable in certain circumstances so I have ordered a replacement.
I have never heard of anyone until now with exposure to more than a few iOS devices that haven't encountered a bad screen.

I'd say you must be very lax in what you accept. LCD screens as a rule have issues so all devices Apple and non Apple with these types of screens will have a percentage with issues. Apple has now moved to a new technology with less LED's meaning they are even more prone to screen issues with uniformity. I went through about five original Air's before giving up and sticking with my 4.

With TV & Monitors? Yes if I buy a premium TV or Monitor for a premium price I expect a premium product. If I bought a budget tablet, TV or Monitor I might be more lax but I expect the highest quality if I'm paying the highest price.

On the positive side Apple have patented a new type of OLED screen for the future so fingers crossed these issues may be a thing of the past in a year or two.

Returned my pink-bottomed screen :)D). Replacement is noticeably cooler tinted, but basically even colored and a keeper. Last year I went thru a half dozen to get a good one. This year I'm happy with #2. Either the luck of the draw was on my side this time or Apple has tightened up the panel manufacturing process.

Nice, I have ordered a replacement and if it is a keeper I'll just return this one. It's not bad per se and I'm happy to use just now but I expect a better screen for the money I paid.

The only thing Apple tighten was theiir bottom line. I went through 4 iPhone 6 and every single one of them had different hues and uniformity! I found one with a pink tint but uniformed. I am afraid to try the iPad ffs!!

I have owned 7 iphones and currently own 3 ipads (2,3, Air) and as a developer have handled probably close to 100 different mobile devices. Every time I go to an electronic store I end up messing with the on display devices.

I have yet to see one with a display that I felt wasn't perfectly fine. You, my friend, are in the minority here. The average person doesn't return the device multiple times seeking absolute perfection.

Of course it is your right as a consumer to return it as many times as you want so no issue there it just strikes me as odd is all.

I would imagine I am the normal one here as most people won't return this stuff 5 times to get absolute perfection. Even apple couldn't sustain a product that requires 5 returns before one sticks.

What does one of these bad screens look like? Do you have an example? I have never seen a bad ipad/iphone screen personally and I have handled over 100 devices.

I returned the Air and kept my 4 so don't have it but the book spine effect can be a mild blue effect on one side too the extreme of the one I had which made it look like the left side of the screen was falling away. The uniformity issue is basically yellow down one side getting darker toward the edge and a much lighter blue hue on the other side. This is just the Air, I never had a Ipad 3 but that had some very yellow screens apparently.

It's not about whether the screen is warm or cool but the mix of the two which makes using anything with a white background infuriating.

Apples own community forum had a thread all about the Air issues it was the longest thread they've ever had and it was full of people returning several Airs. I gave up after four or five while I was still able to get my money back but others were trapped in the constant return cycle trying to get a decent screen because their return date had passed. I can't see why anyone would put up with a defective screen for the money Apple products cost.

The Air uses new screen tech that uses less LED's this is known to have more issues with screen uniformity. It doesn't mean they are all bad but you have more of a chance of screen issues. Basically thinness over ruled screen quality.

Some examples of Yellowing.

Look at the two keyboards and how different they are.

I do love how when this issue comes up everyone suddenly claims to be a developer or photographer and are so obsessed with screen quality but can't see the most basic defect.lol.

Those do look awful. I have never seen one look like that in person out of the many I have seen.

All the iPad Airs I got last year (3) looked like that pic on the bottom. One side was always way more yellow than the other. Oh and lest I forget book spine too.

Coup degrace is when not only is the tint worse in the one you just exchanged, the screen also has dead pixels (center) and dust between the glass. I stopped after three last year.

Let me see if I get it right.

The first image has yellowing at the right side of the screen.

The second image has lighter hue keyboard at the right side.

This says more about your credibility and ability than your experience. You seem to have no idea what to look for.

I've returned 4 Retina Minis a year ago. Not a single of them was acceptable in regards to uniformity. Always white'ish in the top and yellow in the bottom.

I've returned my iPhone 5 twice as one had dust beneath the screen, the other had dead pixels.

Apple's QA/QC sucks. Lately image retention, book spine shadow and display uniformity have been the biggest issues.

Do you work for Apple?

Not only that but when you take it into the store they agree to exchange it but say "Well it looks fine too me, we sell millions and this is the first I've heard of this." I mean please don't pee down my neck and tell me it's raining.

I've been lucky and honestly i'm not real picky about screens tbh. I did return a 1st gen Mini which happened to have a real bad yellow tint on the bottom right corner. I compared it to my Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 and the Samsung panel was a brilliant white. The Mini never achieved that level of screen quality. I'm not overly picky about lightbleed unless it's excessive.

All of my iPad's have a certain level of lightbleed but I did keep them. The one thing I am absolutely picky about are dead or stuck pixels. But I do agree that tinting issues do exist. Some have a higher tolerance or don't notice it like others might. If I turn any of my iPad's on an angle they'll turn slightly pinkish. No biggie for me as I look straight at the tablet. I can see where it might bother someone else.

Just laughed so hard at this, you're so right! I've been saying the same for years... For a technology giant Apple are surprisingly naive to the fact the masses have the power of the Internet! "We sell tens of thousands of iPads from this store alone and have never seen a defective screen, you must just be really unlucky, however, it looks fine to me" ok then mate yeah, so the forum thread on the official Apple Support site regarding screen defects that is 176 pages long is just a figment of my imagination yeah.... Don't patronise me!!

These are not at an angle though it's looking straight on. I don't mind a warm screen or a cool screen it's the uniformity that's the issue, I don't want a half white half yellow screen. I use alot of apps with white backgrounds making it very noticeable and makes using the device unpleasant. My 4 never had these issues sure like yourself if I turn it to an extreme angle I can see a certain hue but again it's uniform and only seen at a certain angle. Apple now use a type of screen with less LED's this means they are more prone to uniformity issues, thinness has trumped screen quality which to me is bizarre, the screen is what I look at and use, it's the single most important part of the Ipad experience so it should be the number one priority.

Samsung tend to use Amoled screens which have very white whites and very black blacks, the draw back is the colours can seem a little over the top and unrealistic. The Nexus 7 2013 had a great quality screen. I suspect both of these take a bit more room, weight and power hence Apple not using similar tech. Apple have patented their own version of an OLED screen so hopefully this is something they are looking to fix in the future.

It's frustrating as I want to upgrade and my use of the Air was great, very fast and nice device but what's the point of having a great device if the screen is sub standard and ruins the experience? I'm also not a fan of Android so I'm kinda stuck with my 4 for now.

Book Spine

Just went to Best Buy last night and both demo models has atrocious book spine shadows along the left edge. I would have been hesitant to put them out for public view myself. I intended to buy an Air 2 to see if I could do better than the visible book spining I have on my initial unit. but what I saw in the BB showroom was so bad it made we wonder if chances are low of getting a truly uniform screen from this design.

I didn't even know what the 'book spine' effect was until I saw a thin faint line along the left edge of my Air 2, and finally it dawned on me.
It's noticeable in Safari but strangely not so much in other apps with predominantly white screens.
I really don't want to exchange it, as it is a cellular model with AC+. It's a hassle. I guess I'll see how I feel in a week.

Apple are about to announce an end-user fix for these screen issues but I have a copy of the information leaked by a commercial drone operator employed by the Kowloon Gobble Gobble Turkey Sizzle Sweater Tin Foil Hat Company.

The procedure is as follows:-

I was going near my local Apple store today and decided to return my 64GB Air 2 and pick up a 128GB cellular instead. The screen is much better - I'm going to keep this one.

I received my new Air 2 today and the screen is perfect, whiter than the first one I received and no obvious book spine effect or colour shift. It's a keeper and the previous one is going back.

I'm finally able to answer my own question as I just got my IPad air 2 and I'm disappointed to say that I've never seen an ipad with such terrible bookspine shadow as the one I received from apple store today.

I'm going to ask for a replacement of course as this is unacceptable, even worse than the ones I've seen with the ipad air 1.
