Doesn't Opera Mini speed things up by having things go through their servers (basically being a man-in-the-middle)?
To my knowledge, that's correct. Their servers are in Norway, I believe.

Doesn't Ghostery work with ad platforms and advertisers?
No. Depends on your definition of "work with." I trust Ghostery more than any other "secure" browser/extension for "privacy."*

*Air quotes simply because such things don't really exist on these here interwebs.

Yes, I've read that 2013 before. I can see that it could be labelled as a conflict of interest, but Ghostery's disclosure of what a user opts in to and opts out of is clear and easy. (vs. many of Google's practices or Verizon's super cookies, etc.)

I've used Ghostery as a Safari extension for some time and am quite happy with the service it provides.

EDIT: Turns out, I'm in good company.

"Any reason to use Safari over Chrome" is backwards. The question ought to be, "Any reason to use Chrome over Safari?"
Somehow you've become confused.

Just one glance at the Google Chrome Store with its thousands of free, highly useful, time saving extensions, is enough for anyone to see the huge advantage of Chrome.

Yet that said I give Apple tremendous credit for the power and influence they have over a vast number of their customers. Those who'd rather just let Apple guide them, saving them from having to think and make their own decisions.

In addition Apple gets them so emotionally connected, they argue in favor of Apple just like the money was coming to them. A very revealing behavior.

So people can't like (or dislike) something that is different from someone else without it meaning that they are just being brainwashed basically?

My only disagreement here would be over Chrome. Yes, extensions. Firefox/TenFourFox has addons. I like the latter better and since I don't care for Chrome's interface and how it handles extensions I use that over Chrome.

My faculties are just fine, though I appreciate your concern

Quantity =/= quality. A cursory glance at the 3rd party keyboard selection on Google's App Store, or even Apple's for that matter, should be enough proof of that. By the way, citing proliferation of Dev's on Google's store isn't exactly compelling given the ubiquitous and frequent news of devs/apps with nefarious intentions.

Yet that said I give Apple tremendous credit for the power and influence they have over a vast number of their customers. Those who'd rather just let Apple guide them, saving them from having to think and make their own decisions.
Ah yes, "Apple is a cult, and everyone who uses their products, or default apps in this case, are helpless sheep." Haven't heard that one before. If I'm using Safari I'm either brainwashed or dumb. But let's be honest, this is all low-hanging fruit though, isn't it?

In addition Apple gets them so emotionally connected, they argue in favor of Apple just like the money was coming to them. A very revealing behavior.
People are argue for that which they have chosen and believe to be the best for them? Do you not? Are you not in this very post? This isn't revelatory at all; rather, it's standard fare.

Call me crazy, but I've chosen to stick with a browser that's more efficient (proven), syncs across all of my devices (fact), reliable (my experience), and doesn't skim/farm my info for ads (as others do). But what do I know, I'm just a sheep, or cult follower, or something....

Update: I've been using Safari exclusively for 3 days and I don't think I'm going back to Chrome (at least on iOS, I'll still use it on Windows machines).

The swiping back to load the previous page instead of having to use the back arrows sealed the deal. I realize you can do this in Chrome too but it's SO MUCH SLOWER that it's basically worthless. It's unbelievably fast in Safari! Whether this is because I installed an ad-blocker or just that Safari is inherently that much faster, I don't know.

Also the ability to peek & pop into forum threads here is another thing I didn't know I was missing out on until I tried it.

There's still a few things I'm trying to get used to, but it really does seem like a superior browser!

I'm only using it because either Apple makes it really difficult for other companies to make a decent browser or Google, for whatever reason, is purposely holding back. It works well but, I prefer using Chrome on everything else.

Safari gets better battery life from your laptop and it has Forcetouch integration.

However, Chrome is the better experience for me.

The scrolling is smoother and Chrome just seems faster in general.

Searching in the Safari omni bar is a wreck. Google searches sometimes require me to hit enter twice. Sometimes when I hit the back button to go back to google search results the screen in blank. Bing is no better, it still sometimes needs two enter presses to run. Duck Duck Go runs the search fine but then I get a drop down menu from Safari with Safari suggested results. What a mess.

I've used Mercury and Chrome on and off. I would say that both are better than Safari in terms of functionality. But for me, Safari ultimately wins. Every link on the phone opens in Safari. Also, I actually enjoy using force touch.

For me, Safari is good enough (and I do a lot of web browsing on my iPhone) to make having a third party web browser unnecessary.

I personally haven't found a compelling reason to use chrome instead of safari myself. I let chrome open things from hangouts and other google apps but I use safari for my main browsing needs. The main setback is there is no way to set another browser to be default. Because of this I am organically using safari more than anything anyway.

Is battery life an actual issue with other browsers? I ask because I don't know.

Opera Coast is actually less of a drain than Safari for me. I use Safari now though, mainly, because it's back to being good. It was shocking in iOS7 and so-so in iOS8.

I searched the forums first but most of the threads relating to Safari vs Chrome are in relation to OS X.

I'm wondering if there are any really good reasons to use Safari over Chrome on iOS other than personal preference?

I've used Chrome forever because I used to use PCs exclusively and it was obviously far better than IE. When I switched to Mac, I stayed with Chrome over Safari because I was used to it, so when I got my first iPhone (4), same thing. I only use Safari when I click on a link in twitter or my email or something and it launches automatically.

With the new allowance for ad-blockers in iOS 9, I got excited but then realized that they only seemed to be available for Safari, which is why I'm wondering if I should switch. I do a LOT of browsing on my phone so I plan to try using Safari exclusively for a few days to see if I like it but I'm wondering if there are any measurable reasons for using it as well? Like is it faster? Does it use less battery? Or is it purely a matter of personal preference (and/or whether you believe Google is the devil :p)?
There are non at all. Chrome all the way.

I prefer Safari on iOS and Chrome on Mac OS X.

On my laptop, I want more functionality and speed so Chrome does it for me because it just works faster and all the useful extensions. It is also less of a memory hog which is important on my laptop because it can truly actively multitask. Chrome for Mac OS X also has more useful features than Chrome for iOS.

On my Phone, I want integration and couldn't care less for a 1-2 seconds saved in the web browser itself when I know I will save more time when I am switching apps constantly. Also I have the 6S+ so I am not concerned with memory and I may be the minority, but I use the 3D Touch peek/pop features all the time.

I just realized that I responded above as though we were discussing Safari vs Chrome on the desktop.

If we are talking ios, then I use Safari. It has content blocking and 3D Touch. That's enough for it to be better than Chrome on ios.

Eh, I mean that's not too much of a bonus to prefer safari in my opinion,

so the people that use Chrome, do you use the gmail app?

if you use safari, do you use the regular mail app? or the gmail app?
