I downloaded Purify. Well worth the $2! Can't believe how fast the browser is now.
I know, we are like downloading a tenth of the stuff. All the ads and trackers not downloading. Saves on data too. But the speed is so wonderful.
I read that like 11 trackers get downloaded with New York Times pages.

I bought 1blocker because of that review. only to be disappointed in seeing lots of blank spaces where the ads used to be.
1Blocker is fast becasue it doesnt rearrange the websites after it takes out the ads.

went back to purify
I also tried several and settled on Purify.

First, of the four Macs I use on a routine basis only two are Intel and of those only one is mine and it's not my daily use Mac.

So, that limits me to the last version of Safari running on PowerPC Mac, OS X 10.5.8. Unlike Safari, TenFourFox (a PowerPC fork of Firefox equivalent to the latest version of Firefox) is highly customizable. I have a list of addons as long as my arm that customizes my in-browser experience that Safari cannot match. That's before we get to useability.

Safari on any computer I've run it on has a very, very bad habit of displaying how many items it's loading, then changing it's mind and loading more, then changing it's mind again and deciding that whatever it's loaded already is good enough thank you and it's not going to load any more elements. It'll keep on spinning. It has a bad habit of stalling out when I need it to fully load and displaying graphics wierdly until I scroll down and back and a lot of other annoying glitches - it likes to tell me a script has become unresponsive when using Google a lot. Of course that gives me the beach ball until it decides it's ready again.

On other platforms, since my preference is thus for Firefox/TenFourFox/Mozilla I find it's usefullness lacking. Dolphin on iOS has quicklaunch. Safari on iOS does not. I can share tabs from Dolphin on my iOS 9.0.2 iPhone 6s+ to my PowerMac Quicksilver G4 running TenFourFox. Safari? No way. Not going to share ANYTHING with OS X 10.5.8.

I do use Safari on my QS to grab a quick video or make a quick search because it is fast (when it wants to be) but for long term use. No. Just no.

fair enough

safari on my 2011 macbook pro is lightning fast and i dont encounter any reloading.
but i guess on a powerpc computer i can see why you'd need to make those sorts of workarounds.

any reason why youre sticking to powerpc in this day and age? Does it not lag a lot on modern java heavy websites?

Back in 2003 it was cost. Now, it's because I love being able to do things to these Macs that I never could afford to do and get performance out of them as best I can.

My Quicksilver has two 1TB SATA hard drives (I flashed a $10 PC SATA card). It's got three video cards, one of which is a Radeon 9800 Pro and drives six displays. I've got a USB 2.0/Firewire 400 card and a Bluetooth adapter which allows me to use my Magic Mouse (also with scrolling gestures). It's got a Sonnet upgrade (1.2Ghz) as well.

Literally, there is what would have been a couple of thousand dollars into this machine for a fraction of the price. And even though it takes three video cards to do it, the six displays my Mac drives are three more than what I have at work - on a MacPro.

And for the purposes I need it for, it's still very, very capable.

Lastly, I have a tweaks/addons thread in the PowerPC section that optimizes Firefox/TenFourFox for best performance. Addons like RequestPolicy and NoScript as well as BluHell Firewall and quite a few tweaks in about:config keep things reasonable. It will never be as fast as an Intel Mac, but it's not slow either.

Integration with Safari on your other Apple devices. The iCloud tabs and such.

this is why I use it! If I have a page open on my computer, I can open it on my ipad or iphone without having to remember to bookmark it! and of course, all my bookmarks are available on all my devices!

amazing. you should set up a thread/post showing your set up

I searched the forums first but most of the threads relating to Safari vs Chrome are in relation to OS X.

I'm wondering if there are any really good reasons to use Safari over Chrome on iOS other than personal preference?

I've used Chrome forever because I used to use PCs exclusively and it was obviously far better than IE. When I switched to Mac, I stayed with Chrome over Safari because I was used to it, so when I got my first iPhone (4), same thing. I only use Safari when I click on a link in twitter or my email or something and it launches automatically.

With the new allowance for ad-blockers in iOS 9, I got excited but then realized that they only seemed to be available for Safari, which is why I'm wondering if I should switch. I do a LOT of browsing on my phone so I plan to try using Safari exclusively for a few days to see if I like it but I'm wondering if there are any measurable reasons for using it as well? Like is it faster? Does it use less battery? Or is it purely a matter of personal preference (and/or whether you believe Google is the devil :p)?
just one simple reason for me: I will never ever trust Google for my browsing ....

It's too bad something seems to have happened to Mercury where some unknown party has taken over it and it's unclear what they are doing with it.
Trashed since then .... they ruined Mercury Browser, and made it absolutely unsafe to use

Not as far as I know. Chrome seems to use far more resources than safari. I have family members who insist on using it, and their fans (Macbook Pro retina) go full bore even with lite-ish web browsing.

Somehow you've become confused.

Just one glance at the Google Chrome Store with its thousands of free, highly useful, time saving extensions, is enough for anyone to see the huge advantage of Chrome.

Yet that said I give Apple tremendous credit for the power and influence they have over a vast number of their customers. Those who'd rather just let Apple guide them, saving them from having to think and make their own decisions.

In addition Apple gets them so emotionally connected, they argue in favor of Apple just like the money was coming to them. A very revealing behavior.
much better to basically give up on your privacy trusting such a correct company like Google, right ?

You have something to hide?

I don't mind giving it up in exchange for conveniences like automatically marking my calendar for date and plan confirmations sent to my email or giving me a heads up on traffic and weather conditions based on where I am and when I'm expected to leave.

This. I don't know why Chrome uses so many resources. ☹️

Oh please, stop being paranoid and uninformed.

According to my calendar it's 2015. There's a sector of the industry known as "Big Data" if you had one sliver of knowledge about what Big Data does, they make Google look like clueless first grade children. But no one is going to be any more aware of it than you presently, unless they care enough to do the work and research it. It's neither advertised, nor as easy to find as the next new movie release.

If you wish to be relevant and knowledgeable about what's really going on, learn about the companies who's only job is to gather your data. Once you have a grip on that suddenly you'll laugh at your former image of Google.

Yes they track your buying habits and other non threatening preferences like airlines and such. They can then sell ads, you get a massive advantage of All the Free Google services. Services that so many people use frequently, they have forgotten just how much they rely on Google.

It's Google that's changed and continues to change the world. But like anything else that one gets for free suddenly they don't value it like if they had to pay $90,000, like so many do for a new German Luxury Car.

Google is loved by many and only hated by the paranoid, under informed , victim types.

Free =/= free.

Comparing an evil organization to a more evil one doesn't make the former less so.

I haven't seen such a love fest for a tech company since...well...since a thread I read just a few mins ago, but for Google? Seriously?

Could you paint with broader strokes or use a more over-worked tautology/fallacy of false bifurcation?

There's loving, there's hating, and then there's a whole lot in between where most of reality falls for many people.

I'm also less fussed on using chrome due to privacy, but I also acknowledge that pretty much every aspect of most internet enabled services that I used is monitored/recorded, as a previous poster said, big data is a massive thing.

I like safari as it fees like a Mac App/it is not resource hungry like chrome/interaction with mobile safari. I guess it depends upon your needs. I know a lot of people who switch from Pcs to Macs and get Chrome and then complain that their mac is slow/heats up, so I hope those sorts of issues get fixed up.

Interesting the emotion you attach to a statement I made.

I do fully realize that one gets kudos from your other Google Fearing / Bashing buddies. Especially in this forum where spewing venom about Google is wildly popular.

If you're so convinced Google is evil then the most logical choice is to detach yourself from the Internet.
Just think, a spiral paper notebook doesn't require batteries, never crashes and only goes where you take it. :D
