love the notification system, don't see why it should be updated.

This is an extreme case of fanboyisim

Meh, could just be someone who doesn't do a lot of notifications, or isn't really interested in the nuts and bolts of good UI.

I showed my wife "Notified" on my phone and she looked at me... Looked at her iP4... Looked back at me and said "no, I'm still not going to let you jailbreak my phone or whatever it is".

"It's perfect the way it is."

Doesn't really care about the notification system, or the lockscreen, or doing FaceTime over 3G (except she likes that I can), or custom text tones, or SMS from anywhere in the UI, or only four icons in the dock, or.. Well you get the picture.

Told her I wanted an iPad once, and she asked me which gun I planned on selling first. So she's certainly not a fangirl.

I don't know what you all do but I get only a pop up message that is really important like a SMS and I love the way it is now that I can read it directly as a pop up, it's done much better then in all others phones I had. Why on earth are you getting messages from games lol
Game Center invites, etc.?

You're not using it right.:D

There are people who get Calendar alerts, SMS alerts, etc. This stacks up.

What about when you're talking on the phone you get a text, you have to close the text first to end the call. I also hate watching videos and a message pops up and stops the video.

I like the notification for texts since it's been like that since the start and I'd forget to reply if I don't do it straight away but the notifications are annoying at the same time, I don't like the apps that just send you ever little bit of information. Hopefully apple will have something ready and hopefully they may out an option to keep it the current way or the new hopefully improved way.

Push notifications have been out for only a year and a half.
Give it time.

What bothers me about this system is that if you receive a text while on phone call, you have to dismiss the text popup before you can end the call. For people in Canada that have per minute billing, this really can add up. 30 cents each time if it happens at the wrong time. I hope to see this changed.

I don't even think a "HUGE" overhaul is needed

they could just add more options to the notification menu and be done

Personally I use my phone as a communication Device, I'm completely comfortable with a Text message interrupting me the same way as a phone call, while browsing the internet or playing a game.

but I have the rest of my notification set to have sound and badges, but no alert notifications = I'm aware of the updates but they aren't intrusive

I rather like the iphone notification system but I could see it getting annoying if I had it set to get alerts every time someone posted on facebook (i turned this off). For calendar alerts I find it fantastic, it pops up and tells me which conference room I need to be at and what the meeting's about at a glance. It's the best for someone that relies on their calendar a lot.

I like it for texts too. I know at a glance if it's worth responding to immediately or not. If you have it set to tell you every time one of your friends has a new thought or wants to play a game than yeah, it could be tiresome.

You could just press the sleep/wake button to end the call instead of going and pressing close om all the notifications.

So what happens when you're away from your phone and you come back to find you had a text message, an e-mail, and a phone call? You dismiss all 3 things (because you have to close them in order to do anything.) Now what? You've got to scroll around looking for the various apps that send you the messages.

Wouldn't it be nice to have 1 place to look at ALL the pop-ups you've gotten today and just look at them all in a row instead of having to jump all over the place? Or what if you want to look at that list again tomorrow? Tough luck, any record of notices has been erased.

And wouldn't it be nice to be able to USE the phone (I gotta call my boss back, right away!) and then go back through the pop-ups when you want to? But no, you have to decide if you want to go through the pop-ups RIGHT NOW, or if you want to use the phone, which makes you dismiss (erase, really) the pop-notices you got.

A computer should let me do things when I want to do them and not force me to do certain things before other things. It's as simple as that.

-Are we gonna have to wait until 2011 to get a decent music player for Android,
-And/or the much promised general UI overhaul that was meant to debut in Gingerbread in order to eliminate the current utilitarian approach (blacker colors with green icons doesn't even remotely cut it),
-Or 2.2 Froyo for the devices yet to receive them...7 months after release? What about 2.3 too?

Companies, if they want to, release stuff when they're fully baked & ready and/or when their next update cycle comes around.

You know Apple's normal iOS release pattern so why are you asking redundant questions.

PS- If you do respond to these, try not to resort to your predictable Android fanboy response(s)...or your nonsensical trademark retort "read more, post less"

I expect apple to implement a notification app which will log all notifications. We'll still get the popup but if there are more than one at a time, you can go to the notification app and see what other notifications you got. You'll also be able to see past notifications....like fox news....I unlock the phone and realize there was a message but then it's to late. The notification app would be have the message logged for you. I think I would be happy with this kind of improvement.

I just get 2 pop up messages that are important to me, one is if I get a new SMS and the other from the phone app when someone called, I really don't need a place for them when I just can launch those 2 apps. How do you get mails as pop up messages?

I think a notification system that works like the multi-tasking tray AND folders would be ideal.

When you double tap, the multi-task tray appears at the bottom. Click on a folder icon and it "expands."

For notifications, you double tap and the same tray appears at the bottom, but a new tray similar in design appears at the top of the screen with all your notification events (mail, text, voicemail, etc.) You then tap on an event and it expands like a folder icon allowing you to see all similar event notifications. Swipe up/down and the event folder collapses/minimizes. Then tap on a different event type and same thing occurs. Would be very Applesque'

To prevent in your face notifications, when a new notification comes in, the top task bar appears (even if in an app...but doesn't stop the app from working, just lessens the screen real estate size). Or better yet, appears as a behind the app image. A multi-touch swipe pushes the screen back to normal size/makes the image disappear.

The problem herein is with Apple's move into full-screen apps. How do you maintain full screen apps (iOS and Mac OSX) and still notify the user of an important incoming message/event?

Hope Steve and company figure it out, because I hate the current notification system.

This is actually a productive thread on the notification system. And yet somehow...you manage to turn it into an Android attack?

Even a double facepalm cannot cover the dismay of doing something like that.

PS - I like what you did there with the hidden text.

It takes a special breed of stupid to post an Android retort like that in THIS thread of all places.

Talking/complaining endlessly about the inadequacies of the notification system on macrumours won't get anyone a faster resolution. Everyone knows the problem and are equally waiting for a resolution. There have been countless threads on the matter it's becoming jarring. It's not 'productive'. If you wan't productive, DO something about it by going here

My Android comments were directed at the OP because he's a notorious Android enthusiast.

I didn't do it so you could like it, and its not exactly hidden if you saw it.

It also takes a special breed of stupid to be able to identify and label another supposed special breed of stupid.

Hear that whoosh over your head? It's the point of my post flying right over you. Your post had absolutely nothing to do with the thread.

The fact is you had absolutely no rebuttal to the abysmal state of iPhone notifications. In utter desperation, you went off on some tangent about Android.

It would be almost amusing (if it wasn't so pathetic) what you fanboys come up with when you are backed into a corner.

It takes a special breed of stupid to be able to identify and label another supposed special breed of stupid.
So what does that make you?

Ok, well your problem is that you only get notices from 2 apps. Some of us have notices from several apps and get a lot more notices than you do.

Imagine getting 5 notices all in a row and having to erase all of them before you can do anything with your phone. It gets frustrating. Why can't I deal with one thing and then return to the list? Why must the notifications vanish once I see them once?

How do you get mails as pop up messages?

G-Mail with the Boxcar app.

For light users like me the current notification system is fine.

I am on ATT prepaid, so I don't get very many alerts, when I want to check my email (on wifi) i click the app and see my emails, I am a college student so don't get as much as a typical business user.

However, I no people like me sound like an old record player, but JAILBREAK your phone.

I for one thought I was the last person to want to jailbreak my iPhone, I loved the simplicity, and organization throughout the OS, I though that everything in Cydia was just going to make my phone look clunky and messy, However my setup has still allowed me to keep the organized look and do alot with my phone.

I would recomend Notified pro or notifier to everyone that is complaining, see below for pics.

Notifier gives you icons on the bar on top where the time is for Calender, sms, email and many other notificattions, and its FREE.

Notified pro is like an android notification bar, where you can slide down the top bar, and go in to all of your apps.

Jailbreaking has let me add many cool things.
For example:
photoalbums+ allows me to create albums and move photos in between them, and mass delete/move photos. it looks very apple like too,
here is a link, someone earlier in the thread was interested.
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1056578/

when my friends try to guess my pass code, i have the timed lock out, disabled, so when it says wait 30 seconds, I click back and can type in my code.

Also using iFile, (app store, I believe) I know its in installous.
and downloading, iPhone explorer:
http://www.macroplant.com/iphoneexplorer/

I can transfer songs, videos, and photos, to and from my iPhone, and transfer documents, and create folders.

And using iFile, I can watch videos, listen to songs, and veiw photos, all without using itunes, plus if you have a document app on the phone, it will open the files and read them.

Android users boast about the customization about their phone, jailbreaking an iPhone gives you way more, and you have the ability to tweak your phone MUCH MUCH easier.

More like are we only going to have to wait until June 2011? Let's hope so, because you know if we don't get a new notification system in iOS 5 we won't see it any earlier than iOS 6 in June of 2012.

They could improve the notification system by massive amounts just by adding an "ignore" button to notifications. It needs completely overhauled, but that button alone would make it much less of a pain than it currently is.
