My gf is considering the Rose Gold iPhone SE, but I'm trying to convince her to wait til next year. Currently, the SE has only 1.2MP front-facing camera, which is a deal breaker as she does a lot of selfies.

No one can be certain, but considering the success of the current SE, I imagine they'd refresh again.

Maybe they'll refresh it in the fall next year to line up the launches of the 4" with the 4.7" and 5.5".

Instead of trying to convince her to wait, perhaps you should be trying to convince her to never take another selfie. Ever.

Just saying....more people die every year from trying to take selfies than from shark attacks.

I don't think they will refresh it next year, very unlikely.
They will probably refresh it after 2 years.

I'm with the opinion that they'll probably refresh it once every two years.

I got my wife to get the SE very recently due to the fact that she is still using a iPhone 5s and didn't really like bigger phones. She tried my iPhone 6s and found it cumbersome to handle. In our case, she doesn't do a ton of selfies but uses the rear camera most of the time. I've always advised her to use the rear camera for selfies if she wants a good quality selfie anyway.

I'd say to hold on till September if she doesn't need a new phone urgently, prices might drop upon new series announcement. There's no need to hold on if she's into small phones and need it now.

no they will not just like the 5c , it is merely a way to use older parts, to resell.
there will not be a SE revamp. the idea behind the SE was to use parts from iphone 6s and the shell of the 5

Do you really believe that? The idea behind the SE is a low price iphone. They don't have warehouses of old parts that they have to move. The huge success of the SE surprised everyone and I can't imagine not getting a refresh. This isn't the crappy 5c.

I think the success of the SE will call for a true 4" flagship, at least in terms of design. It will probably still be behind in specs, but I can see Apple releasing an upgrade sometime after the mythical 2017 must-have upgrade iPhone 8.

The SE will continue to drop down the ladder as is, depreciating right along with the 6s, until it sells for as little as $199 or less.

In the meantime, Apple will release a 4" flagship 7, which they can then use to depreciate down to the original SE levels, before refreshing it and replacing the SE.

So, the SE refresh will be every three years at most.

Yeah, the low-res front facing camera is a big disappointment. Whether you like it or not, selfies are here to stay.
I'm hoping the next SE will sport a redesign to fit in 3D touch, better front facing camera, and 2nd gen touch ID.

What do you mean next year? Haven't you heard the iPhone 7 is essentially the iPhone 6SE?

(I jest, I jest)

We have no idea when the SE will be refreshed. Maybe its a cousin of the 5C line, and will be refreshed in 2017, or maybe it's something new and will have its own yearly cycle.

It seems to me the "Special Edition" means it won't be a yearly refreshed phone. And if my guess is correct, it will not be refreshed in 2017 or 2018. This is a 3-year-phone made to give the 4" market something to hold onto and it will continually go down in cost making it a mainstay in industries where cost is most important. Then in 2019 it will either be refreshed or the form factor will be dropped completely and indefinitely.

The ONE feature that could potentially prove me wrong is 3D Touch. The problem is that they're already committed years ahead to support non-3D Touch devices. So it becomes how important Apple seems it to add to the SE or a version thereof.

The SE won't be refreshed till 2017.

If the 4" phone gets added back to the yearly lineup, it won't be until 2017 either.

So 2017 is shaping up to be a key year for several things.

3D Touch is not going to be a game changer for several years. iOS 10 is already confirmed to duplicate Touch functionality in traditional inputs. Until Apple removes a physical button, Touch is not going to be vital. By the time Apple does that, there will be a new 4" and the SE will be discontinued, no longer supported by the latest OS.

The selfie camera isn't that bad. I used it at a family party to do group photos that I could be in, too, and it was better than I expected. What it's got going for it is a good price and feature set relative to other new iPhones. We took advantage of Apple's trade in policy and got our SE's for discounted prices after trading in our old iPhones. Assuming Apple keeps the policy in place your girlfriend can trade the SE in and use the money back toward a new model when and if it comes out.

Lol, as long as she doesn't make those stupid ducklips she should take all the selfies she wants. I can't for the life of me understand what's up with pretty women posing with that horrible fish face pout. Is it a misguided effort to look like Angelina Jolie?

Nobody knows when it will be refreshed, if at all. I can't see it until fall 2017 at the earliest. But we're all just guessing. I personally love mine and would buy it again in a heartbeat. But then again, I don't take selfies...

I believe it won't be upgraded. Instead, I think that Apple, surprised by the SE popularity, will introduce a 4" version of the iPhone 7 (or 7S at the latest due the short time between the SE and the iPhone 7), and then continue having such a model in the future.

The SE name tells me that it was a stop gap model, introduced to cater to all the people who was craving a smaller phone. I doubt there'll be an "iPhone SE 2", even though Apple seems keen on lousy model names lately. And it makes sense, since Apple seem to be pretty out of touch with their users these years (Apart from the 12 year old emoji fanatics apparently).

You don't honestly believe this... the se has been a success the iPhone 5c was a disaster

I've taken plenty of "selfies" with it, and the picture quality is just fine with proper lightning. Apple has been trying to prevent pixel creep since they launched the iPhone. I'm convinced the only reason we have a 12mp camera now is to increase detail on digitally-zoomed pictures, and to ebb the perception that their cameras were inferior to Android's much higher pixel count cameras.

An annual refresh of the SE seems unlikely in my opinion. I've read many reports about Apple recycling its parts for the SE. This low priced phone cannibalizes its existing sales and steals some customers from 6s/ 7. In all seriously, if SE becomes a norm, and upgrades in size, then who would bother to buy the normal 7, 8 high-priced iPhones?
