I have had many iphones replaced over the years, its $199 no matter what. As long as you have the phone physically. They will give you a look like brand new refurb for $199.

The price of the phone doesn't matter. It's a flat $199 rate.
Just to reiterate what dave420 posted, Apple's raised the iPhone 5 out-of-warranty replacement fee to $269, not $199 like previous models.

Hmm, that only gives you accidental damage protection for 90 days.

How is squaretrade a better deal? Isn't it $124 for two years plus a $50 deductible? That would mean it's only $5 cheaper than AppleCare+.

SquareTrade is usually around $80 for 2 years with a $50 deductible, but yeah it's not much cheaper, I agree it's not much better. I'm assuming with AppleCare they don't care if you run the phone over with your car or drop it in your bathtub.

So we get warranty of one year correct?

Yes, but it won't cover drops and spills as such. Only if you have a system defects. AppleCare + covers water/drops

You can catch up on the warranty with below links...

That's interesting. So applecare is $180, but am I right that it's 2 incidents? Does that mean I can totally trash my phone and have it replaced for $80 twice, bringing the total up to $260 for two (2) phone replacements in 2 years? This is versus phone replacement at $260 PER replacement.

Also I'm assuming that covers you if you need a repair only that's not related to abuse or water damage, and the $80 deductible doesn't apply to these repairs. So the coverage is nice to have in case of a defect, which happens a lot with these delicate high tech phones.

I don't know if that's accurate, is it?

The per incident cost of the AppleCare replacements went up to $79 vs $49 last year. Is that a deal breaker for anyone?

I don't buy extended warranties to begin with. Buy a $10 - $20 case and don't go swimming is my motto.

Edit: Makes me sad to see how many people in the above poll fall for the extended warranty trick :(

$99 up front for AppleCare+. If you have an incident, there will be an additional $79 charge to replace it (up to two times).

maybe i'm reading something on my account wrong. it's saying purchases that have a warranty less than 5 years in the united states will be covered for an Extra year by american express.
You read that correct, but remember that Apple's normal warranty for the iPhone (the one that AMEX adds an extra year to) does not cover accidental damage. It covers manufacturers defects, like your home button acting wonky, etc.

Separately from the extra year of warranty, AMEX gives you purchase protection, which covers your purchases for 90 days from accidental damage/loss.

Right. $99 up front for AppleCare+. $79 additional to replace it once, $79 again to replace it a second time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you pay the $269 replacement cost, Apple automatically enrolls you in AppleCare+, correct? The $269 eliminates one replacement and then you have one more on the account (after the deductible)?

Except for the users who use them. I buy so much expensive tech stuff that invariably one of those items fails, that one $4000 TV I had replaced a couple years ago paid for my extended warranties for a long time to come. I also remember another Samsung DLP television I paid around 4k for crapping out 2 months after the warranty expired and I had no extended on it because I was cheap, I kicked myself in the butt over that one as the repair guy who gave me $300 for parts carted it away.

Yeah it's the insurance game, but all insurance is built like that. Chances are you won't need it, but when you do need it you are glad you paid for it. Would you not buy car or home insurance? Of course that's another level as you couldn't afford to replace your home with cash, but for some people they can't afford to replace their iphone or their television with cash either.

I've never heard of that.

If you damage your iPhone out-of-warranty (i.e. physical damage) and don't have AppleCare+, you pay the out-of-warranty fee ($269 for an iPhone 5), and they give you a warranty replacement iPhone. It comes with 90 days of their regular warranty, or the remainder of the regular warranty left on your broken iPhone, whichever is longer.

Hmm, I may be a square trade convert. 2 replacements is nice peace of mind to have. Anyone know if the exclusion from the OOW applies to the applecare +:

However, certain damage is ineligible for OOW service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications.

Can you buy applecare if you buy the phone from AT&T?

I saved $800 when I bought an extended warranty on an expensive camera. It's just insurance. Most of the time you don't need it but if you do, it's great to have! On each purchase I make the call. Sometimes I don't think it's a huge risk and don't bother.

Yes, you can buy AppleCare+ for an AT&T or any carrier phone. I have it on my iPhone 5. If its broke, no questions asked, you get a replacement.

The one thing no one has mentioned is that you can cancel your AppleCare and get money back, not all of it but something is better than nothing.

So say you got AppleCare+, a year later you sell your i5s and buy a i6, all you do is call apple and cancel your AppleCare and you get some money back.

So really AppleCare isn't $99 from that point of view.

I paid $149 for a refurbed iP4 when I broke mine. (Without AppleCare.)

Most credit cards will double the warranty...but they probably wouldn't cover things like breakage, more like manufacturing defect or failure of the electronics.

Thanks I may or may not get this. 79 isn't bad though I suppose. No theft or loss protection I don't believe?

From what it says, apple care+ doesn't cover theft or loss protection.

I'm going with AT&T, 6.99/month and it covers theft/loss. I will be getting a champagne iPhone so yeah...anyone tries to steal, I'll somewhat be covered. Thing is my friend says AT&T won't always be reluctant to send you the EXACT phone as a replacement, just fight for it I suppose.

I still have a few days to add it I think.

I got AppleCare+ this time (again). Apple also credited me $50 for my last phone I got rid of after only 1 year. I got one warranty replacement on my iPhone 5, but since I had AppleCare+ they shipped me a new phone 2 day post, then I sent my phone to them, no questions asked, no charge.

No because I'm on t-mobile's JUMP program. It costs $10/month for twice a year upgrades but also includes insurance, so I don't need Applecare on top of that.

Not worth it to me. Rarely would a new phone be required. I'd likely just as always try to fix myself if it breaks

Bought it. These devices are getting more fragile and over 2 yrs...you never know. Compared AC+ with Squaretrade and Apple's deal was better.
