The iPhone 5s is the first Apple product I've bought Apple Care (+) for.

In the past, my phone would usually malfunction 14 months from the date of purchase. (Home button, lock button) I've gotten lucky in the past with free out of warranty replacements, but might as well cover myself since I have the option.

Actually just received my Apple Care + packet in the mail today! (for my iPhone purchased on Apple.com on Launch day)

As far as the Amex extended warranty goes...

It will extend standard warranty coverage to two (2) years on the iPhone, but only up to the amount charged on the Amex.

This means if you purchased a subsidized device for $199, you will only be reimbursed up to $199. In a situation where they do replace it for $269, you still owe $70 out of pocket. They do not care if it is an MSRP of $649 because that is not what you paid for it. Technically, they shouldn't even cover a full replacement unless it's a warranty claim (e.g., not damaged) but their customer service is typically excellent (I'm a card member).

I'll be adding AppleCare+ to my 5S tonight though. I only put $100 on my Amex as I traded in my 4S for store credit, so that doesn't really help me out too much.

As a side note to everyone saying they sell their phones every year: Apple will refund you the unused portion of your AppleCare+ plan. You can sell it after a year and get ~$49 refunded back.

Not worth it to me. Rarely would a new phone be required. I'd likely just as always try to fix myself if it breaks

Exactly, but I'll be paying for AT&T insurance...JUST in case it gets lost/stolen.

I'm learning too, besides that...I have tech savvy friends, and a few that work for Apple Retail.

I was going to purchase AC+ for my iPhone 5S, the same as I did for my 4S and 5, but since they raised the deductable to $79 I have since purchased Squaretrade's warranty coverage. I can still take it to Apple and pay the out of warranty price and then get it reimbursed, or just wait a few days for ST to send me one. Worth the cost savings for the few times I may use it.

I have had many iphones replaced over the years, its $199 no matter what. As long as you have the phone physically. They will give you a look like brand new refurb for $199.

That is really awesome that Apple would do that. $200 for a replacement phone when you damage the phone and it's you're fault and you don't have apple care plus? That's really great service on Apples part.

How is squaretrade a better deal? Isn't it $124 for two years plus a $50 deductible? That would mean it's only $5 cheaper than AppleCare+.

I got it for $84 + tax (coupon code) - it covers 4 accidental damages with $50 each - versus $99 + tax 2 accidental damages with $79 deductible. BIG difference. I got an email with another code yesterday - 1PM7X1LV00.

Now someone here mentioned they bought both the insurance and AT&T's insurance against loss, theft with a monthly charge which I thought was $7.99. Regardless, I never considered getting that coverage, now I'm thinking about it. It's much more likely that I would drop the phone (although I never damaged anything with the original iPhone, the 3GS, or the 4S - I have a case that looks great on the 5S and gives access to all the ports but has just a very small lip protecting the screen).

So if I understand all the numbers correctly...

I broke the screen of my iPhone 5. I had AC+ ($99) and paid for the replacement ($79) for a total of $178 which is about $90 less than a no AC+ replacement ($269). Had I dropped it again my savings would have been greater.

On a side note, the replacement was one of the new ones that can live on T-Mobile so that increased the resell value. :)

Lol after my vote its split down the middle 50/50 I only purchased it because this is the first time I ever paid full price for a iPhone and I have dropped a few and normally I get last years model and the screens are cheap especially since I replace them myself but as of now screens are pretty high + it comes with a few other things I may need since I plan to have this phone for a while.

With AppleCare+ you don't even have to break it. If it gets all beat up and you want a new one, you can get it for $80.

Actually Apple will replace the screen for $150 on the iPhone 5 (haven't heard anyone get one successfully for the 5s yet). If they charge you $79 then you will actually be paying more for the screen replacement with AC+ if that is the only time you use it. I have also heard somewhere they can charge a cheaper rate with AC+ if it is just the screen, but I do not know the details.

Care+ is New in Germany i take it. ans war die Mythos First damage then i will see

geek squad is the best deal, not getting applecare + this year

Not anymore. $9.99 per month with a deductible of $150. So after 2 years and let's say with 1 incident:

AppleCare+: $99 + $79.99 = $179.99 for 2 yrs

GSP: $9.99 x 24 months = $239.76 + $150 for one incident = $389.76

So after 2 years of payments with 1 incident each AppleCare is more than twice as cheap

Absolutely yes. Applecare has been great for me in the past and Apple's service and support is always top notch.

I personally went with AppleCare + for these reasons:

A) no monthly payment like Geek Squad $9.99 on a credit card, or $11 per month on a cell phone bill.
B) Replaced on the spot. No mailing it to me or waiting to get a replacement
C) I don't use a case and this is the easiest way to rock the iPhone naked and not worry about it. Even with something like a life proof or otter box, they don't guarantee a non damaged device they just really diminish the chances of it happening.

no geek squad does unlimited replacements for free...

I have always treated my iPhones like gold cause of the resell value and have always had to keep it in a case...always thought that getting insurance was a rip off...but having it would allow you to not have to worry about treating it the best and would allow it to be naked...AT&T insurance didn't look that terribly bad

Yeah, I'm the crazy one here. I have both AppleCare+ and Asurion through AT&T. Why? Because I want lost/theft and ease of support/warranty/replacement through AC+. Worth it for peace of mind. But, yeah, I'm a bit cray cray, I know. :p;)

Yes I bought Applecare+ with my 5s. It turned out to be worth it for my iPhone 4S that I bought nearly 2 years ago. A few weeks ago the Sleep/Wake button stopped working and Apple replaced the phone for free. That would have cost me $199 to replace the phone if I didn't have Applecare+ I think. Fortunately I didn't have any accidents with the phone.

Kinda sucks though that they raised the price of the accidental damage fee to $79.

As an ex BBYM employee and someone who keeps in constant contact with my former co-workers, they have dropped the iPhone GSP from $14.99 to $9.99 and all smartphones will have a deductible of $150. The one area where I may be incorrect is if that has started or not officially.

wow...thanks for sharing that then! best buy used to have the best protection plan but i see that is no longer the case!

Doesn't applecare cover you for the 2nd year? I think it's fairly cheap to replace your phone even if it's past the one year warranty, I forget the amount but I seem to remember it was like $250 or something?

I was charged $269 on the invoice but not billed because it was a pre-existing issue from1 day before my 1 yr warranty ended. So it must be 269 if you're out of warranty.

I love AC+ but since my wife is carrying the 5s, I went with the Worth Ave Group insurance since it covers theft too. $89/yr with $50 deductible covers everything AC+ does but also theft... and you do all replacements thru Apple. Sounds like a great deal to me!
