Yeah, I'm the crazy one here. I have both AppleCare+ and Asurion through AT&T. Why? Because I want lost/theft and ease of support/warranty/replacement through AC+. Worth it for peace of mind. But, yeah, I'm a bit cray cray, I know. :p;)

Nothing crazy about that. I did the same for my 4S. AC+ is a good deal if you break it, but I also don't want to be out a phone if I lose it. A 64 GB is either $399 or $849 depending on how you look at it. The Worth Ave insurance doesn't cover loss either, only stolen phones (I ride a lot of rollercoasters, so I'm always a little nervous about losing the phone).

I didn't get AC+ this time though (at least not yet, haven't made up my mind for sure). I figured $100 for AC+ plus an $80 replacement is only $20 less than a claim with Asurion for the device breaking. Hopefully I don't break it twice :)

Having AppleCare+ adds a lot of value when you sell your phone. Never mind the two accidental damage replacements, it adds a year of warranty to the phone. Many 16GB iPhone 5 with AC+ are sold at well over $400 on Ebay. I sold my 5 32GB with a year of AC+ left for $550. It literally sold in 10 minutes, got the notification of payment received as I was still putting the phone back in the box after taking the photos.

IMO those plans that require a monthly payment and a hefty deductible are total ripoffs, but it might just be me. As long as it can be helped, I positively will not buy products or services based on a subscription (any recurring monthly payments) model.

I see a lot of value in purchasing a used phone with AC+, as it provides a sort of buyer protection (if the seller is unaware of an issue, or fails to disclose it, you aren't stuck with a lemon).

Separately from the extra year of warranty, AMEX gives you purchase protection, which covers your purchases for 90 days from accidental damage/loss.

when you say loss, i know you mean the destruction of the device. however, it is worth clarifying that the purchase protection covers accidental damage and theft, but the policy varies by card if you actually lose the device, say like in a bar. i know costco/blue/green/gold amex cards don't cover accidental loss, but platinum does.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you pay the $269 replacement cost, Apple automatically enrolls you in AppleCare+, correct? The $269 eliminates one replacement and then you have one more on the account (after the deductible)?

i've never known this to be the case. someone did tell me though, and i don't know how reliable this is, that when you do pay for an out of warranty replacement, they'll offer you the chance to enroll in applecare+ where you pay $99 on top of the replacement cost but then covers you for the two years and two accidental replacements from that moment on.

With AppleCare+ you don't even have to break it. If it gets all beat up and you want a new one, you can get it for $80.

applecare+ doesn't cover cosmetic damage.

For the iPhone 5 it is now $269 for a replacement phone. I do not think there is a confirmation on the price for the 5s yet. One person here was saying they heard it was going to increase to $270 for the 5s, but I do not know where they heard that from.
Edit: Apple's web site now confirms that the iPhone 5 replacement cost is $269.

This is part if the reason I went to a 5C from a 5. My 5 started messing up, and it was cheaper for me to start a brand new phone, than pay for a replacement.

AT&T's rate is cheaper once you factor in the yearly price/ replacement cost vs. apple's rates. I just stick with them.

As an ex BBYM employee and someone who keeps in constant contact with my former co-workers, they have dropped the iPhone GSP from $14.99 to $9.99 and all smartphones will have a deductible of $150. The one area where I may be incorrect is if that has started or not officially.

This is a change in plans. Their old plan was more expensive and with no deductible. (My wife has a galaxy S 2 Skyrocket, with the grandfathered old plan, and she is now not considering upgrading due to the new terms ) any older devices with the old plan still have them, they are grandfathered in, but new phones now have the cheaper plan and the deductible.

Kind of. The iPhone drops from $14.99 to $9.99 but the "other" smartphones stay at their $9.99 pricing

It's so easy to get Apple to replace my phone like they have in the past, I'd rather let them pay for it. Don't forget they've got billions stashed offshore.
