Thoughts of the possibilty of the iPhone's screen being longer but not wider?

  • Hey, as long as the screen is diagonally larger, the lack of extra width doesn't bother me.

  • I agree, the screen should be BOTH wider and longer than the current iPhone 4S screen!

  • I just want the screen to stay at 3.5 inches. Anything bigger than that is something I won't use!

Get a grip man have you even try to use the phone in landscape ? Apple have added great options but sadly the screen cant keep up with all the **** they throw in

Gosh, I've had an iPhone for 3 years but never thought to try the phone in landscape....
I'm saying for me the phone is the perfect mix of mobility and function. The screen is fine as is. Changing it will only lead to fragmentation and more work for developers not to mention a larger device which I personally do not wish for.

It's gotta be a good mix of longer + wider to work properly. Hell why not just make it a foot long but keep it the same width then?

I trust Apple not to come out with this elongated (but not wider) trash.

Same sort of b.s. rumors happened with the 4S as well.

rumors...lol

why even listen to the rumors? remember weeks before the 4S was announced there were pictures all over the net showing a totally different design and it came out exactly same as the 4. nobody actually knows till its released.;)

I was hoping for a taller/wider phone. The way it looks now it will be a slightly taller 4s. I'll have to wait till I actually see Tim holding the real thing up. I know you can only design the phone so many ways. I wish they would have got rid of the physical home button. They could have made it touch and light up like on some android devices.

If iOS6 doesn't make me  I may try another phone. When I buy new model stuff I like for it to look different from the old otherwise I feel like I'm just buy the same product from a visual stand point

Thank goodness you aren't in charge of innovation in the mobile world...if so, we'd all still be using flip phones. The iPhone screen, at 3.5", is too small, period. That's why Apple is going to make the screen larger.

You know, in 2003, I loved the Motorola RAZR flip phone...times change, roll with it.

You're missing an option on your poll... Those of us who don't care so much about screen size, but DO care about the phone size. By keeping the length and width close to it's current size, the next phone will still fit easily in pockets and be easily used with one hand.

I care far more about that than adding extra width for the screen. Besides, they could just about keep the phone exactly the same size as it currently is and still have a 4" a screen....that's what I'm hoping for.

I completely agree with this post. I want it to easily fit in my pocket. I'm not looking for a mini tablet.

Not only is the current size too cramped in landscape (with keyboard open), but it is likely to get even more cramped in Safari due to text rendering larger with the added width.

Having to scroll up constantly because you can only see two lines of text while typing is dated.

Sure hope iOS 6 includes something to increase landscape productivity on the iPhone. It's obvious there are many of you who rarely use it this way, but inversely there are plenty of us that do!

Sooo, we all wanted technology to get smaller, and smaller, and smaller... and then we got it!

Noowww, we want it to get bigger again? The grass is always greener, isn't it?

I don't care if it's wider or not as long as the display isn't a tiny 3.5 inches I'll be satisfied. Good riddance 3.5 inches, you'll not be missed.

When all you used your phone for was talking and occassional texting the smaller phone with it's small screen was fine.

Now that texting, social media, web, apps, movies and other web experiences have bloomed a larger screen makes sense.

If you want a real small phone along with small screen you're going to have to get a dumb phone.

Apple will eventually go to a larger than 4" screen. The 4" stretch will buy them some time. ICS was a nice release for Android another release or two and polish the UI up a tad. Even the polls here are showing a great deal of people are wanting a larger screen. Maybe not a 4.8 but definitely larger. Some of those people will migrate over to Android.

You probably spend more time with your phone in your hands, texting, surfing etc than actually up to your ear talking. On smartphones it seems the phone is secondary while all the other options are primary.

I looked at my bill and my voice usage wasn't even half of my alotted mintues. The data and text were way up there.

There was a study done last year that looked at difference between male/female ownership of Android phones and iPhones:

Android: 39% female, 61% male
iPhone: 49% female, 51% male

Apple has done a good job with the female segment as seen, and some of this can be attributed to the size difference in the phones. An iPhone still makes it able for a smaller hand to reach across the screen when compared to wider phones. I don't think Apple would like to divert from this fact.

This was also one of Jobs main criticisms of wider phones. He wanted a phone that could be controlled with your thumb across the screen and to make sure that the phone did not need a stylus. I really do not see an iPhone getting any wider. I think most of us would be more shocked to hear that the iPhone will be getting wider than not.

Honestly I don't think it has as much to do with the size and one hand usage. I think it's probably seen as more elegant or a fashion accessory when it comes to women. Then you throw in the ton of 3rd party accessories and cases. You also have the Apple name and at one time you could only get the iPhone at AT&T or Apple. It's starting to branch out to where it's a common device. I had a friend call me the other day and ask me if I knew anything about the Note. She had played with it and liked it. I asked her was it too big for her, she may be 5' I'll give her 5'.1" to be nice but she said no. I told her to get an iPhone so we could facetime and she could do dirty dances for me, she laughed but said she didn't want an iPhone everybody has one.

There are a few ladies here in the office with larger phones and one girl is small and she loves the bigger screen.

I seriously imagine really effeminate men who have trouble sitting down because of their skinny jeans typing away angrily, acting as if a slightly bigger phone will mean they will have to buy a new designer eco-friendly bag from some obscure San Francisco couture shop just to hold their phone in, because otherwise they'd have to buy 20 new pairs of jeans to slip their phone into.

The argument is so ridiculous that it can only be justified if the above were actually what people would go through if the phone got bigger.

Best skinny jeans rant i've seen in months but something is wrong with you Calidude. Why are you so angry?

Because he still can't figure out how to make a well-balanced, meaningful poll. :p

Anyways, no. I won't be upset IF the iPhone is not wider. I'll be happy with whatever Apple brings to the table. iOS is where my loyalty is. I've bought into it so much(iPhone, iPad, thousands of dollars worth of Apps) that it would be ridiculous for me not continue getting the next generation iPhone. That alone keeps me away from Android and Windows Phone. I've made an investment that would be quite silly for me to abandon.

So it's not just about the device. It's about the ecosystem. And from what I have experienced, Apple has become the best at providing that ecosystem.

Totally asinine statement.
100% agree with you.

I still can't believe some of the people on this board insisting that a 3.5" screen is perfect. That's like saying the Lakers still dominate the NBA...this just in, it's over. Bring something exciting new, BIGGER, and fresh to the table or don't come at all.

Agreed but did you *have* to mention the Lakers?
