320×480 is just so sooo low..I can notice how bad it is when I zoom in on the pictures. As I said, I hope to get a higher resolution screen on the next iPhone. But the screen size is perfect to me. If it was bigger, there would be consequences..battery life, size and weight of the device, having to use both hands in occasions as someone said. Now, with the current screen size, one finger can cover the whole screen easily :D

If the iPhone increased in size, wouldn't developers have to recode their apps and make images etc. larger in their apps before it becomes like the apps we have on the iPhone today?

I personally don't care about the new screen size. All I care is that I'm getting the new iPhone whenever it comes out :)

I am happy with the screen size only thing I want more is to make the black bars top and bottom smaller

Seriously .. I never thought apple will go smaller on screen size .. it was a tendency to beef up the screen size. I tried the HD2 and the screen looks awesome which made me believe apple will do the same. Well .. i do complain about the size of my 3g .. i cant have a good grip of my 3g in one hand. Not only that but getting the phone out of pocket is little inconvenient. Still, I will welcome the new 4g .. like the new design and size.

I just dont see how some people on here dont find it disappointing that the NEXT generation of a product can have less (in any way) than the previous....that doesnt make sense...

Your mistake is in thinking that some sizes are 'better' than others.

Different people prefer different sizes. I know people who will never buy an iPhone (not even the new one) because they consider it too large. So larger is certainly NOT 'better' for those people.

If bigger is better then please buy a 17" Macbook Pro with Skype and use that as your phone.

What? That's too big? That's funny, because you sure make it sound like getting bigger and bigger makes it better and better. At what point does that stop for you? You have a line somewhere, don't you? You really can't see that your stopping point might be different than someone else's stopping point?

Yes!

Well I for one am very disappointed!
I was like if the size stays the same well...MEH.
But SMALLER???
REALLY?
:eek::eek::eek:

First, thank you to everyone for mostly not turning this into a long running sexual innuendo and actually making real comments.

One thing I'd like to add is that I looked at giz's comparison shots between the 3GS and the leaked phone. From what I can see, the screens look like they're the exact same size (but the screens are off so I can't see their official edges). I'm not so sure the screen will be smaller. They never even posted any measurements.

I did see the specs listed somewhere and the screen *IS smaller.
I wish I could remember where I saw the specs.
If I find it though, I will post back.

EDIT:
Oh I did find the specs on Gizmodo's site:
"The hardware specs
The phone measures 4.50 by 2.31 by 0.37 inches. It weighs 140 grams. The 3GS weighs 137 grams on a postal scale (and 135 on Apple's official measurements). So, in comparison, it's 3 grams heavier. The battery is 5.25 WHr at 3.7V, compared to the 3GS battery, which is 4.51 WHr at 3.7V. On the back of the phone, it said it was XX GB, but since we were unable to get the phone to a running state, we couldn't see exactly how large it was."

Then I went to the Apple web site and compared Apple's iPhone 3GS specs to Giz's and it is smaller.

Relax people, the new screen will be better than the old screen. Will it be smaller? It might be 3.4 or 3.45 inches instead of 3.5 inches...look at the comparisons, they look nearly identical. I doubt people are going to pick up the new phones when they come out and complain about how much smaller the screen is. The resolution increase seems pretty dramatic if the estimates are correct.

I don't see screen size on those specs.

Just because the chassis is smaller doesn't mean the screen is.

I'd have liked to see them remove some of the black bars and open the screen up a bit that way. :D

there is no way apple will make the screen smaller. it will DEFINITELY be at least 3.5. I actually think it will remain 3.5 due to apple having to resize applications etc if it is any bigger.

I never said bigger is better. Read what i said agin. I said that it doesn't makes sense to have less in a new product....

Ok, go buy a brand new TV that is thicker than the one you are upgrading. Would that make sense to you? No. If you were going to upgrade your TV, you would want it to be a step forward (thinner) or at least the same and not a step back (thicker).

This is what that quote of me says....

Actually, I'd say most women consider thicker things an upgrade.

The size at the moment is perfect, you don't want a massive screen, you don't need THAT much space IMO. Don't forget, a lot of something good isn't the best.

Higher resolution would be enough for me. Apple should keep the next iPhone at the same size as the current version but making it even thinner. I'll definitely trade thinness for bigger screen.

Well it doesn't bother me as I call Oled(Organic Light Omitting Diode) screen! :D

I think that 3.7 inches is the perfect size for a smartphone but if it means a bigger iPhone, I rather prefer a smaller screen. Also I'd like to see smaller bezel, but Apple should't completely get rid of it for ergonomic reasons. Let's say it should have been 2-3mm less
Anyway I think that apple has a whole team of designers that work on the shape of the iPhone, so my opinion doesn't count so much.

Per Gizmodo, the screen size on the 4G is 3mm shorter than the current iPhone. That's a hair more than 1/10th of an inch.

http://gizmodo.com/5520772/its-not-about-the-iphone

Son of a bitch! That genuinely frustrates me.

New theory: Apple is purposefully making the screen smaller with higher resolution so you say, hmm, this is a little uncomfortable, I wish I also had a device with a bigger screen ... (iPad)

I used to think the iPhones screen was the perfect size until about 3 hours ago when i was playing on my friends HD2. OMG that thing is cool! I know it has terrible colours, but having a display that large is really nice. I admittedly am bigger than most people (that's what she said :p) and so I have bigger hands, making it more comfortable, but still...

It doesn't have to be 4.3", but a 3.7" or possibly even 4" (i dont know if displays come in that size, I'm just spitballing here) would be very welcome. The thing with the HD2 is that it can pull off having such a massive screen because the whole front is screen, it doesn't have that huge black border like on the iPhone, and i think that's where Apple should take a leaf from HTCs book.

While we're on the topic of screens, I also hope they stay away from OLED, I like being able to sms and browse during the day.

But really my biggest concern is a highe resolution with maybe more accurate touchscreen (since hgher res, higher scale touchscreen too) if that makes any sense to ya guys heheh

Not sure if you're joking or not, but...

The resolution of the display has nothing to do with the resolution of the touch sensors--they are separate components, with the capacative sensors overlaying the display panel.

I emailed Giz to ask for the exact dimensions of the screen.

However, considering the Apple mafia and the police are knocking on/down doors.. I probably won't get an answer.
